Cruising The River Avon in Somerset -Kennet and Avon Chronicles part 6 - Episode 59

In Episode 59 Tales from The Swan’s Neck journeys further along the Kennet and Avon Canal. Andrew travels from lock number one Hanham Lock, on the outskirts of Bristol, along the very beautiful River Avon, and into Bath City Centre. The river locks are long and wide, but later we ascend the second deepest lock in Britain. Awesome. Andrew also introduces a new crew member, and together they are fortunate enough to view Pulteney Bridge and the horseshoe weir from an angle few get to see.

Thanks Lesley, and I'm so pleased to have had a positive influence. I hope you find boating relieves your anxieties, it certainly has with mine. I have a half-finished blog on mental health and the positive effects of boating and when we read your comment this morning Val suggested I should get it finished and put it out there, so perhaps that will be the next one. Take care and good luck with the boat hunt.

Thanks John. Yeah it's been unbearably hot today (and the boat exaggerates the external temperature) and is going to be far worse over the next couple of days. Sadly we don't have much shade. We've moored somewhere to make a music video for Val and all the shady spots are taken. Hey-ho, nevermind. Hope summer is good for you. A viewer from Alaska says it's been unusually hot and dry there too.

So glad to see this one, and to see the wonderous Pultney Weir again. I was university in Bath many, many years ago (48 years ago if my arithmetic is correct) and remember swimming over the weir - through that central chute thing - during a massive heat wave and drought. I loved Bath. Also, renting and rowing skiffs on the upper reaches of the river to Bathhampton weir. Later on - after graduating - I worked for the Avon Rubber Company at Melksham and Bradford on Avon - both originally water powered mills used to power the raw rubber processing machines. Love your content.

Cheers Skip, we're setting off on our travels now so hopefully videos will be more frequent. That said the Caen Hill lock flight has been shut for over a week now due to problems with the pump and water shortages. We've had little rain this year, and the temperatures are sky-high at the moment. That's interesting about the river names there too. I'm sure we'll be using some of Val's music in the videos, and her KZread channel is kzread.info/dron/ZHyGcXvV4eK3oB7Y36D82A.html Take care

Blah! 3 weeks ago from tomorrow I was attack by an Ent. (Not an Ear, nose and throat Dr ) short story I was cutting the top of a tree that had fallen across the road so I could get past. That tree was at least 60 feet tall. While cutting another tree feel on me. Did it’s best to take my head off. My left shoulder down to the hand was black with bruises. Scapula cracked. Couple ribs under the arm pit cracked. Couple vertebrae slightly smushed. Three days before I could get out of bed by myself . I can play a little penny whistle though the fingers are weak. Probably a couple months before I’ll be able to hold a guitar. I am getting better. Getting out of bed is pretty easy. I go for a short walk each day. Maybe 800 feet round trip. Family insist on some one sleep here in case I fall. All in all I’m healing. I still laugh a bunch. Hope all is well with you.

Wow Skip, that's shocking news. You're a lucky man to come out of that one - although it probably doesn't feel like it at the moment. Best way to beat it is to stay positive and push yourself each day - I'm speaking from my own experience having fallen 60 foot down a waterfall and spent 10 days in hospital. I didn't have smashed vertebrae but 4 prolapsed discs and I'm now 2 inches shorter than I was. But hang on in there and you'll soon be playing all those new tunes you'll be writing in your head. Wishing you a speedy recovery. All the best.
