The story of Ben Mankhamba is interesting. He dropped out of university in 3rd year and decided to take up a career in music - he never turned back. He started off as Ben Michael, then adopted his father's original name Mankhamba. Then later accepted the invitation from the elders of his village to go and lead the village as a Village Headman.
He produced several music albums in the 90s which were very popular. In 2000, Ben Mankhamba started his own band, Zigzaggers. For 6 times he won the Malawian Kuche Kuche Music and Malawi Gin Music annual competition.
He performed in many local and international festivals in countries like Uganda, Kenya, Japan and Zimbabwe. He also performed and conducted workshops in German, Berlin, Muchen, and Hannover City with Blantyre Arts Festival Acoustic Trio.
Ben is now Village Headman Chingalire in Nsalu, Lilongwe. He has gone ahead to nurture his passion in music by setting up an ethno-music village where all kinds of music is shared and performed to audiences.
