Most of the time inquisitors ain‘t just psychoathic sadists. They are often more or less sociopaths but I actually believe atleast half of them basicly numb themselves to any sort of empathie cause their very important and essential job is not one you can live with long if you don‘t. I know many see the inquisitors as more or less the evilest of evil guys in the imperium, but let‘s be real someone has to do those kinds of investigations and witchhunts. Cause if witches were real and would have opened literal gates to hell if unchecked, then our witchhubts wouldn‘t have been what they were either. They‘d have been basicly nuclear counterterrorism. And if you as an Inquisitor (or even interrogator) , have witnessed the 10th time not just instantly burning a block of the city including all the families and childeren down causing the fucking planet to start first coughing their brains out then starting to strangle their own next of kin with their bloody entrails, then you might just start to rather take the safw route and produce a couple 1000 marytrs just in case. In a very twisted 40K way you could even call them selfless for basicly giving up all their basic humanity for the sake of stopping demonic incursions and stuff like Druhkari raids. Doubt they really enjoy killing innocent people but when in doubt (and sad to say rightly so) they dovert to their motto „innocentia nihil probat“ - innocence proves nothing.

Some are saying the Inquisitor found the girl and regretted the death, which is in keeping with them. They do what they do for the majority, but hate it when innocents or loyalists are killed because thats one less spark on the world. But seriously, that girl dying when being born in an underhive was perhaps, as cold as this is, the best thing. More than likely the warp would absorb her soul before the deamons could. Less likely, emps got to her sonce it was on Terra. Either way, no more pain.

Yeah, Spinosa had no choice. The video is an inaccurate description. The girl was a servant in the Inquisition fortress Spinosa was assigned to, more or less. She activated the gas as a last ditch defence mechanism after all but the final command centre of the fortress had fallen in a massed assault and it was clear no help was coming. Most of the Fortresses guard detail were dead, locked in hopeless combats and unable to relieve the fortress as a whole, or wounded and sealed in the final chamber waiting for the enemy to breach. The action, though absolutely necessary, hauntd Spinosa for the rest of the series.

That’s the great thing about 40K. All cruelties are justifiable by the fact that if the people carrying out these atrocities weren’t capable of doing so, humanity would most likely become extinct.

What I love about 40k is that in most of these cases, the Inquisitor is in the right because their cruelty is a necessary evil.

I can’t stand the Inquisition. They are one of the main reasons I haven’t started that series after reading Wraights other two books set in this time frame.

Well, it is not like she wanted to kill all of them. The fortress was under attack, the defenses were falling one by one. She felt pretty shitty and even the other Inquisitorial agents were at first appalled by her actions.

Don’t get me wrong, the inquisition ARE arseholes for sure. But considering what the face on a daily basis, it’s hard not to. Their specific job is to watch out for the Imperium, not the people. They don’t like to kill randomly, but rather than it be a loss of life, they consider it like losing a limb to frostbite to save the body. Kinda why I love 40k, a lot of things are bitter sweet. Like when the SW save all those guardsmen, who had genuinely earned the right to survive, after the feat they pulled off. But there WERE genuinely tainted/evil people/cultists in those groups, and absolutely more damage and lives were lost in the future than what was saved. And that’s the stuff the Inquisition deal with. Honestly, they are arseholes, but NECESSARY arseholes. It’d be boring if there were just “good faction bad faction”. Instead, there’s good and evil in both, and sometimes good deeds get punished with bad consequences. I guess what I’m saying is, sometimes the evil options they take are the best way to save everyone else AND their freaking souls. Plenty jump the gun with callousness though, but over all, when you’re dealing in a setting where 1 person possessed CAN cause a warp rift that’ll suck a planets souls into daemons waiting mouths, it’s hard to pick the nice option. A cracking faction in a literary sense, dealt a damming role by malcador in the preservation of humanity by any means.

As a rule, Inquisitors aren't cruel so much as callous. They commit horrible atrocities, not for shits and giggles but because they believe it's necessary for the greater good of the Imperium. They'll avoid it if they can, but for most of them, it comes down to a numbers game and they will personally feed a puppy's soul to Slaanesh if it means saving a planet.

"They believe" is kind of the key point there. They can believe many things and how connected to actual cause and effect they are can vary greatly. The Month of Shame and Golden Lions come to mind real fast. Events driven not by the cold calculus of war. But pure unrestrained ego that wasted tons of resources and manpower for petty childish reasons.
