Crown Impression Tips Part 3

A viewer requested some tips for final impressions. I asked a number of residents and mentors for their own tips. As well, I took a look through the literature, and textbooks (Summit (Operative Dentistry) and Schillingburg (Prosthodontics)) for other helpful tips. This will be in 3 parts.
Here is Part 1: • Crown Impression Tips

Hi Iain, thanks for the comment. It's recommended to remove the deflective cord when taking the impression - however - every situation isn't the same and I'm sure there will be some situations (albeit rare) that you may be able to obtain a clinically accepable impression with the cord in site. However, there may be a few issues that I can think of at the moment.

Hi. could you explai what STAY IN THE GAS means? i cant fint an explanation of that. not a native speaker)

Removing the cord from the impression without tearing the impression may be difficult (especially if it's a larger cord with > surface area for the material to adhere/bind to). If the impression is poured up w/ the cord, this may not be of consequence. There may be excess water in the larger deflective cord that may affect the accuracy of a fairly hydrophobic impression material (PVS). It may be difficult to effectively dry the cord, leading to increased # of bubbles in the impression.

Hi, was wandering do you remove only the deflective cord or keep in situ when taking the impression? Have enjoyed watching some your videos, given me some ideas, thanks again.

What kind of crown do I need if my root canal has been done a few years back. It’s turning grayish now. My paperwork from the dentist says Crown porcelain/ceramic substrate. Please give me input on this. Thanks in advance.

Have worked in dental offices and have had my own experiences with dentists...no one ever done this procedure like this...Moreover, I am in treatment again ,because the previous dentists did not do a good procedure...it is sad, very sad!! I need to go through this pain, over and over again! I really do not understand the rush and the unconsidered work!!!!

Flexible plastic impression trays simply distort and rebound upon removal. It is not a surprise we see so many very poor fitting crowns.

The Harmony Posterior Dual Arch Tray uses a steel distal bar. The narrow stainless steel bar at the back is only 2.6 mm in diameter, preventing tuberosity impingement, while still giving it rigidity equal or better than any other disposable Posterior dual arch tray. www.hodentalcompany.com/harmony
