I never, ever get tired of this song. It's a true beauty on a whole album of incredible songs. One of my favorite albums ever.
Why is every Crowded House song an absolute gem

Because it is a gem.
I love Nick's bass playing in this one. A highly underrated bassist.
Out Beatled the beatles with this gem
Gorgeous song, lyrics and video. Very soothing. Like a heartfelt prayer.
Coulda/woulda/shoulda been a hit, but wasn't.. a hidden gem.. such emotion.
Your skin is like water on a burning beach and it brings me relief. Magnificent.

I know I'm taking this too literally but I always imagine the burning beach Neil mentions is Kare Kare since it's a song on this album and in summer the black iron sand there is truly burning hot.

That's why I love them. Since 1987 when they first came on scene
A slice of Crowded House at their best 🙂 Masterful songwriting by Neil Finn. Paul Hester R.I.P.
Overall, greatest band since the Beatles, IMO.
My younger sister was obsessed with Crowded House. She'd listen to their CDs and watch one of their VHS tapes over and over. I didn't see the appeal at the time, but damned if their entire discography isn't still burned into my brain a couple of decades later.

So, so beautiful. I've been a fan for 30 years. Love all that Neil does, right from Split Enz onwards x
This one is an arrow in the heart, of the strange hypnotic state of depression.
Why have I not listened to this for 15 years? superb band
I go through favourites and this song is mine now. It's about bloody time Neil Finn gets put on our currency in my humble.
Fascinated by this song....Neil's writing is in the God Tier.....
I have chills listening to this gorgeous song
I always found most of the songs on this album to be more eerie than previous ones. It might just be me, though.
The the lyrics in Neil’s songs are nothing short of haunted, spiritual and from a dream. Cheers.
Nick Seymour...brilliant.
These guys are on the timeless list for songs that never get old.
This song strikes Me as a prayer 🙏
"But it warms my heart to see you can do it too." - wow, what a line.
I don't know if it's true , but Paul McCartney was once asked who was the greatest living songwriter, to which he replied Neil Finn. I totally agree with him, regardless of whether the comment is true 😉

No, Paul never said that.
My life is a house You crawl through the window Slip across the floor and into the reception room You enter the place of endless persuasion Like a knock on the door when there's ten or more things to do Who is that calling? You my companion Run to the water on a burning beach And it brings me relief Pass through the walls To find my intentions Circle round in a strange hypnotic state I look into space There is no connection A million points of life And a conversation I can't face Cast me off one day To lose my inhibitions Sit like a lapdog on a matron's knee With the nails on your feet I woke up the house Stumbled in sideways The lights went on and everybody screamed suprise The savage review it left me gasping But it warms my heart to see that you can do it too Total surrender Your touch is so tender Your skin is like water On a burning beach And it brings me relief And it brings me relief And it brings me relief

Great transcription of the lyrics, but I think it's "a million points of light, and a conversation I can't face".
One of their top five best songs in their catalogue!
Bought this as a single. Haven't heard it in decades!
One of their top ten.
Just ‘rediscovered’ this beautiful song
This band got it so right and totally nails it.
I love this song
Diamond of a song, a real gem by time he sings total surrender ,hands up I surrender, beautiful flow that falls away to a pool of sweet honey, just saying!.
So woefully under appreciated given how few views this magnificent song has. I visited Perth Australia the year after this album came out and had this firmly in mind when I plunged into the sea on a 40 degree day
Thanks ,i'vee been so long ago try to find this song, I really love this song
Classic ❤

I hope Neil's not gasping.
My favourite too. Weird it's not on their Greatest Hits album.
I still have memories to the car I was driving back then cause I had a 6 CD player in the back and a collection of those cartridges needed cause the car was able to save playlists for each cartridge. That being said I had a crowded house beatles collection in one cartridge that played my favorites on long trips across german plants I had to visit ... that was the soundtrack of my 1994 summer when german football team had fully sucked in the US as the current world champ ... Remember: that was the dawn of CD drives in computers and writeable CD were not there, no recording software and mp3 not invented and internet was more or less unknown ... and 64 K bit modem highspeed line, isdn coming up as the hottest tech in europe
I first became aware of this song when they played live on The Jon Stewart show. They actually started the song at the guitar interlude on their appearance. They also did a great live version of Distant Sun on the show as well.
I actually like this song it is relaxing ;) This song is the most beautiful song I've ever heard of :)

Crowded House un groupe si attachant, de très bons musiciens, pour moi toute une jeunesse, très fan. Merci à vous pour ce plaisir musical.
Heartbreaking that there is a cherub with a snare drum and Paul Hester is noticeably absent in this video. :(

Hester was still in the band at this point as this video was produced in 1993. You have to remember he was in a fragile state at this point when they began promoting Together Alone as he feared of going on tour then feared of returning home. Moreover, he was about to have his first daughter in 1994 so it's understandable that family obligations would soon have to take priority professional.
But it warms my heart to see that you can do it too...
Great song

Perfect.
Lyrically impossible to improve upon Musically, perfect Thanks

This song...it's about being shagged back to life...and my 13 year old self who song along to it (and everything else by CH) never realised. I just thought it was a fanciful romantic song, lol.

I like Black & White Boy! I like CH's rock songs in general: they're a good musical contrast to the other tracks, and I love Neil's & band's sound on them.
