What's most impressive is how quickly Otto learned to be careful and gentle with the bird. Kids that age are so easily excitable they forget their own strength and spatial awareness but you can see Otto moving with great care and purpose when he reaches out to pet Russell. That's how you raise a boy to be kind.

I had crows in my yard, they liked the corn feeder and the pecan tree. One day watching them, I noticed one bird had a very peculiar gate. This individual was missing his right foot, no clue how he injured himself. There on the ground with him was another family member and they had extra guards posted. Over the next five years I saw the handi-capable crow numerous times. He always had a buddy on the ground with him and at least two members posted as guards. The altruistic nature of this interaction gave me a new appreciation for this species.

So many people say that animals don't have feelings. So NOT true. They show true love.

The Tibetans and many other cultures hold that animals feel all the same feelings we do. That is why animal welfare is so important, even if an animal goes to the table. The claim they don't have emotions is just a way to not deal with their reality and what it means for humans.

Never underestimate the level of affection of birds. I had a parrot who I loved so much. I took him in as a baby and we were very attached to each other. He would sleep in my shirt and take baths in the sink. He was such a happy bird. He was very kind to other people and flew on them if he liked them, he’d play with their hair and jump on their shoulders. However he was very protective of me if he didn’t like someone. Birds are much smarter than they are given credit for.

I too had a special pet parakeet as a teenager named Bird. He was very smart & affectionate and would love to sit on my shoulder & chirp loudly whenever I practiced my violin. He loved looking at himself in the mirror and would engage in play with my sibling and I. He loved to suck the juice from tiny pieces of orange. 🍊 He learned how to talk a bit too. Sadly, he died of a tumor when I was 15. I will never forget him. RIP Bird ❤🦜

Oh, my, just keep your shiny things away from them! A friend of mine took an earing off and laid it on the arm of her chair on the back porch. When she got up to answer the phone, she turned around just in time to see a crow snatch the earring and fly off. Thank goodness it was just costume jewelry and not real gold, because she never saw that earring again! Eventually, she just put the other earring outside, too, so the crow could have the set! It sat for three days before the crow came back. And, being a smart bird, he sort of looked around for a bit, like he thought it was a trick, before finally taking it and flying off. 🙂🙃🙂

This is one of the cutest stories ever
I raised a crow from a fledgling when I was in high school. He was a very neat bird. When we were outside he'd hear crows cawing in the woods and looked that way, but it was as if he didn't quite understand what was being said. He would come down out of the trees when we would sit in the deck and hang out.
A little bit of kindness can pay off in a big way.
