Over the course of 7 years, the Saudi air defense shot down 850 Houthi drones...many of which were shot down by the Cortal and Shaheen systems, as well as Oerlikon GDF cannons

Oh, I hated the Crotale playing desert strike. Hits harder than the Rapier and too fast to dodge.

Only on paper and marketing claim. In Iraq Operation Desert storm, Crotale was the SAM that failed to hit anything just like Mirage F1 with its R530 Matra and R550 Magic missiles failed to hit any US fighters. Whereas Russian made SA-6 was best performer, even old SA-2 had 1 recorded kill. In air to air, only Russian made R-40 had successfully hit US aircraft. French weapons are inferior to Russian & American.

The White Supremacist regime in South Africa used the Crotale surface to air missile against Angola and Cuban MiGs during their military intervention in the Angolan Civil War.

Very nice video...

I hadn’t even read the word “crotale” in 35 years, but it always stuck in my mind for some reason from playing Desert Strike as a kid. Today I found out it was an actual weapon system lol

Back in the day it wasn’t Thales but Thomson-CSF. Back then the USA, and other countries as well, also sold military equipment to China.

The original vehicle, as supplied to South Africa, was utterly rubbish on any surface except perfectly flat tarmac or concrete. It got stuck even on mowed grass.

It is a false narrative that drones are such an invincible new threat. Where ever they excel, they do so because they perform a function of some older type of weapon or hardware with less cost and more expendability, not because they are a step into something previously unheard of.

strategic mobility is a thing, and it’s a much more pressing concern for the french than any of those countries (US does it too but everything fits in a C-5 or C-17 and they have dozens of both)

And France has given exactly (edit: all of two!) to Ukraine and only given half as much $ worth of military aid as Lithuania despite an economy 64x bigger w/much of it being the useless AMX. And if you wanna talk about a country with an imperial mindset…

Lithuania shares the same issue Ukraine does, it has a border with Russia and want to keep them busy elsewhere. Germany doesn’t share a border and has given $17.1b (France, meanwhile, $443m). If you need to ask about France’s imperialistic history and attitude, you need to do some very basic history learning.
