Crossing the Pacific - 3,000 Nautical Miles of Nothing [🎥38🌏]
We depart the Galapagos for the Marquesas Islands, 3,000 nautical miles across the empty Pacific. Along the way we have total carnage in terms of breakage (chafe, ripped sails, leaking hatches) and some health issues aboard. This is Part 1 of a 3 part series. Join us every Monday for a new release!

ABOUT US: We are a family of five sailing around the world on our "dream boat," a performance catamaran named "Archer."
Ten years ago, before kids, we sailed a Lagoon 380 named "Honeymoon" halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences with family and friends via KZread, and by happenstance created one of the earliest sailing channels still posting. We also realized what an incredible experience we were having and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with our kids.
OUR BOAT is a Ferrari red Outremer 51 performance cruising catamaran. We chose this boat as it has been specifically designed for the purpose of bluewater sailing. It was designed and built to withstand the stress of "sailing multiple times around the world safely and in comfort." And yes, she's nice on the eyes too.
OUR ROUTE has taken us from the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States down to the Caribbean and then through the Panama Canal. At the time of posting this we have dealt with the Coronavirus lock down in New Zealand and are now cruising again in Australia.
PLEASE COMMENT!: As a "family channel," we are required to actively monitor all comments, but we still want to hear from you. Tell us what you think!
THANKS for watching all. Subscribe now and never miss an episode!

This Outremer 51, Archer rocks. The speed and comfort is amazing. You nailed it with the 11 knots and a Easter egg hunt comment. I'm consistently amazed with the kids playing, reading or sleeping while the boat cuts through the ocean at 10 plus knots. I love these passage videos. I know they are rough and seem boring to you but how you guys cope with them is interesting to me. It's also a testament to your skills and commitment to sailing and adventure as a Pacific crossing clearly shows.

I really love all of these KZread families and their passages! Thank you so much for making and sharing your beautiful videos, because your hands are already full, raising a beautiful family, being incredibly responsible parents and all of the work that goes with producing fantastic content for us! A lot of cruisers split the cruising year so both hobbies can be enjoyed. We met many people enjoying the Caribbean and then leaving their boat in Grenada to fly "home" for the summer (or leaving it somewhere in the Med or Tahiti or ...). Hope that helps? Thanks for watching!

I love following family boats...you guys are in for a great time....cheers!
Your departure from Isabella brought back wonderful memories of our passage on June 23, 2013. The day is etched in my mind because later that day, while downloading charts over the SSB we learned our first grandson was born! Two hours out of Isabella we passed a pod of whales. We made Hiva Oa in 19 days, sailing wing and wing on our Amel Mango. Our second grandson was born August 30, the day we arrived at Point Venus. We sold the boat in Pittwater, after the fourth granddaughter was born. We met Impi in Nuka Hiva and cruised together for a time. Anna literally saved our dog in Tahiti. Glad you met them. Tempest.
great dad n family show
G'day SV Archer, sailing upwind, at almost 11 knots, you're bloody ripping mate. I reckon your sails are definitely punching the wind. Good on ya! Nice job. Safe passage, best of health, and remember, always enjoy the view. Cheers from Margaret River, Western Australia 🇦🇺!

Well sir, you do indeed a fascinating life aboard your family boat. The CodeD damage will hopefully hold up with your sketchy repairs. Your boys are so self-entertained, it just shows that the beatings & sleep deprivation have worked! Kidding! You and Elizabeth have obviously done a great job of nurturing these lads and the proof is so visible now. I’m hoping that Archer maintains her good behavior and keeps moving along so well.

Can’t’ wait to see the next part. The breakage shows the need for even more spares and certainly a spare asymmetric or the like. What are your thought on that ?
have seen a few captains in light winds running the code D as an example on the starboard side and the gip on the port side at the same time to just to get a bit extra speed. Just thought i mention it for next to try
You need to get you one of them sailrite sewing machines and carry a little bit extra canvas with you you could have showed an ice patch on their and not had to worry about it

@TheSailingFamily
3 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea. There is a bit of science to them, but the short answer is we put one down when the wind is in front of the mast. When going downwind like we are here, we keep both up! We'll feature that in a future video!

I hear you speak about the games your kids invent. That creativity is a great quality to have. But I wonder, do your kids get homeschooling like the Zatara kids?
@TheSailingFamily
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, we homeschool them like the Zatara kids. You'll see some of that in the next video!
Just wondering, do you guys set the autopilot to steer to a wind angle or a waypoint? In the last few years I've mostly used wind angles, the boat sails more efficiently and there's less sail trimming to do. BTW, the O51 is very impressive!
@TheSailingFamily
3 жыл бұрын
We tend to use the heading waypoint as the boat tends to "S" when set to wind. We just keep an eye on the wind and trim constantly. We find it faster overall. We'll use the wind setting when the wind is super shifty, usually near land, to keep boat speed up and avoid over pinching. Both nice features to have!
What watches are you doing through the night?
On average when your cruising on these long voyages how much sleep do you get? Like always great job on the video!!!!!

I can't get my head around the logistics for a trip of this length. How do you manage to keep everything fresh?
@TheSailingFamily

You start to lose fresh veg and bread after a couple days. Then you eat a lot of fish and rice!
Curious how & when you sleep. Do you just set on auto-pilot and sleep? Safe travels to you and your family.
@TheSailingFamily
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the autopilot is n the entire passage. Every minute of it. And at night we can set an AIS alarm, a radar alarm and a wind alarm to try and catch some zzzzz’s. If it’s a stormy kind of night or if an alarm goes off, then we have someone awake at the nav station to monitor things. But really there’s nothing out there. It’s a big big empty ocean.

Small question... who is doing the night shifts? Or are you all a sleep when its night? I was wondering this because a see a few clips at night and during the day were the captain is awake?
@TheSailingFamily
3 жыл бұрын
We approach night shifts like this: If the wind is steady and a safe amount away from our next reefing point, then Seth will sleep with a 20 minute timer at the nav table (we have a passage bed next to it). He'll set the AIS alarm and Radar alarm to go off if something gets within 15 miles, and the Wind alarm if the wind changes. If we are close to other boats, or shore, or if the wind is gusty or squally, then we hold a proper 3 hour watch, waking the next person to come up. It's tough with just the two of us, but we can nap during the day. On this passage, most evenings we over-reefed the boat and had calm conditions, so Seth could nap while on watch. There really is nothing out there.
