I remember saying this to my instructor when I was below the driving standard that it was surprising how many bad drivers there were on the road, and he commented that they were below my standard as a learner who required supervision to be on the road and what a shame it was that their licenses couldn't be taken away.

Just have a bit more belief in yourself Emily and remember if youre ever doubting yourself, go watch the earlier videos and see how far youve come. Not many drivers on the road respect learners is one of the main things I learnt while learning to drive. They also seem to take advantage that you are a learner and know you have to stick to the rules of the road and they don’t so you get bullied into waiting when you have priority or they are constantly giving you no space when you’re sticking to speed limits. As a newly passed driver when I’m behind a learner driver I give them plenty of space and never speed dramatically when they are taking there time to slow to a junction because I know how much this can effect a learner because it constantly happened to me and giving space is not that hard especially if you drive being conscious of stopping times at different speeds.

That’s very true . Ppl forget they where once learners . Often when they see the L plate and just overtake anyway. I passed months ago , but whist I was learning I remember a car overtaking me from behind just as the lights turned to green 🤣.

Love this series! Remember that every driver that may be rushing you was once a terrified learner, we all were. I would consider myself a pretty competent driver and yet I still feel uneasy thinking about when I was a learner and horribly stalled in the busiest junction in my city. Gosh I couldnt recover for what felt like eternity to me but the other cars just waited and I moved on. That's why learner's cars have "L" and "learner" painted on them--90% of drivers including myself feel for you and are bottom line expecting you to move more slowly, or stall, or not go at all and wait for the next green etc. It is all perfectly normal and again, if nothing, expected. Emily is doing really well and I'm confident she'll be a great driver one day. Cheers:)

Wow ! I caught myself smiling from ear to ear watching this. Your positivity and energy are admirable and almost contagious ! I'm currently half way through my driving lessons and your instructions really helped me judge which action to take whilst driving. I was freaked out so many times when my instructor kept using the clutch and I lost the track of it below my foot, I felt relieved when you said that's the reason you avoid it. I thought that was so smart of you ! You don't seem to panic and then transfer anxiety onto a student or guitrip your students into learning - which makes perfect sense to me ! You're a rare gem. Keep it going, I will be watching all the videos and taking notes before my test. Cheerio !

great to hear you telling your students that its your responsibility to stay calm and not worry about whether their hesitation or minor mistakes are slightly inconveniencing other road users. I've noticed some driving teachers don't seem to realise that they are putting this on students, and it can create a lot of unhelpful anxiety! when you are learning to drive, the most important thing is feeling safe and in control. worrying about inconveniencing other road users unnecessarily distracts from this and can set up a bad habit of prioritising something other than safety.

Richard, you're a pro! I am an American man living in Kent and I have both US and UK licence. I enjoy watching your video's and learn something new each time. Driving in America is different from the UK because, for the most part, we don't have to worry about roads being used as 'parking lots' as you do here in the UK. Also, you guys spend more time using side mirrors watching out for cyclists and pedestrians. It's not until you drive in New York, Boston or other city driving that watching out for cyclists becomes necessary. Also, because most Americans use automatic, we don't spend much time learning to use clutch and judge traffic.

Thanks for you videos! I've learn more from them than from my driving school. In Ukraine they've replaced almost every traffic lights with the ones that have countdown timers. At least in my town of Rivne. It helps so much to judge whether to ignore or not the green lights yet from quite a distance before the junction. And also this helps to prepare to start after the red light. Also even without timers our green lights blink last 3 seconds before changing to amber.

This video is very useful, I'll be coming back to watch every time before going driving abroad. I've been driving for decade, and this maneuver is non-existent in my country, all lights either run one side at a time or two sides straight only then two sides turn only, so when I encountered this type of signal for the first time, I was lost, I wait for a gap and I don't know that I supposed to move up to the middle of the intersection, in my country, that is illegal move, so now I learnt how to do this maneuver, yet, I felt like a learner again, rofl, it's something I don't have to do but now I have to, to drive in most other countries.

This is such a wholesome series. Many of us drivers have forgotten the struggle to learn how to operate the vehicle. Unfortunately many drivers expect all drivers to do what they would do in situations. Can we all just try to relax and remember that drivers don't use their cars to piss you off. Most drivers use their vehicles to get to a destination. Road rage is only going to injure your own health by raising your own blood pressure

Love these videos - Emily is doing really well, I don't think I was dealing with actual legit traffic lights on my, what, fifth lesson? Though it was years ago, maybe I was! Watching these videos is really helpful even for an experienced driver because going back to basics is the best way to see what good habits are and work out how to improve and overcome bad habits that may have crept in over the years. Your explanations are really clear, too - Emily is going to be a good driver, set up to succeed as a driver in the hectic modern world.

I predict that Emily will be a very good driver. She has a healthy perception of her own skills, and as she practice that will increase along with her skills. She has a high level of awareness about interaction with traffic, being aware of her driving affecting others. Once she gets the muscle memory to "drive without thinking" (about how to drive), that awareness will help her to analyze traffic and make good decisions where many other would do poorly.

Ive also realised with the familiar landmarks that this is Colchester . Students looking for good tuition , this guy is a great choice . Pupils often feel they are not making progress as they seldom realise that any hours behind the wheel , regardless of quality of drive , equals experience and progress .

Something my instructor tells me is when approaching lights from a distance if they’re green the entire time they’re in site then expect them to change by the time you get there. So don’t necessarily press the break when approaching them at green in that case but to take my foot off the gas and slow down slightly and if they stay green when I get within 20/15 yards or so then speed up again and commit to going through at that point.

For some reason, and I mean Richard is GOAT at this, but it's kinda hard to take all the info in at first. Best way to learn everything about driving is just to drive a lot after you pass the test. It seems like and I remember it being for me too like this way back when I had my exam.

One thing that I'm not sure if exists but would be nice to have, is some what a guide on how to build the car length awareness, like is quite hard to know hard far back you can go without any assistance, how far to the side you can go without touching the wall or other car. What I try to do from time to time, is just go to a empty parking lot at night and place some boxes there, but without absolutely no idea what I should I'm for, I just keep moving around the boxes, doing some maneuvers

I want to be an instructor but I don't know how you can stay so calm when the student is driving very slow for the speed, not taking obvious times to go at junctions and staying very close to the left. I think it is a very good skill that instructors have to not get stressed during lessons. I would feel under pressure from other cars and getting abuse by others. I know it happens to some instructors.

I think it is great from following your other channel that as a car enthusiast that likes track driving can also be very calm and patient as an instructor for beginner drivers. It's a very good skill you have. @@ConquerDriving

Over 2 years ago, were you not also slow for the speed, not taking obvious times to go at junctions and perhaps staying very close to the left? I think if you keep that in mind to empathise with learners and *never* forget that everyone has to start somewhere, who knows, maybe you'd make a great instructor.

Yes I did all that, it's also easy to forget but mostly not that I don't understand but more from the point of view of how instructors can keep calm and teach in very stressful situations.@@thedragonbrawler9311

When I "let go of the wheel" I don't fully let go, I still hold on to it, applying some friction, to feel how hard it wants to go. If I don't feel it pulling, then I know I have to take over. Similarly to how you explain about starting to straighten it up slowly, I would release just enough to let it slip through my grip. If I want to straighten up faster, I releas more grip; or grab it to take over.

The problem with that is the leather on the wheel wears more quickly and looks bad. More of an issue in some cars than others. Most people probably wouldn't care but I'm fussy and my car is about to have it's third steering wheel as the leather is worn through in places.

@@ConquerDriving a car is a tool to get me from A to B, carrying the stuff I want to bring. I don't try to make it look bad, but it's supposed to be used, not to be on display. I believe I mostly shuffle the wheel while driving. I'm not considering the watch and airbag as a reason, but I rather find it convenient to keep my hands close to the stalks (especially to enable/disable) indicators at the best time. My car straightens up fairly quickly, by using the friction. I don't think there's much difference in wear, compared to shuffle, probably a little, but it's not like my hands are grit 100 sand paper. Often at multi point turn, (at low speed, I use palm for multi turn, and reply on friction. Steering like a steering ball, without the ball. I sometimes cross arms, If it feels like shuffling is slower,

Driving instructor vehicles *should* be expected to not be going as fast as possible (both in speed and in making maneuvers); BOTH because they are more likely to follow legal instructions (job depends on it!) AND because they may have a student at the wheel. Anyone pressuring such a vehicle is a real ahh, unfriendly, individual - don't worry about making these people unhappy (its likely a constant state of being for them anyway).

The advise I was given and I would give you and i'm sure Richard would give you the same, you drive at the speed that you can see. Basically means, if you can't see clearly what's ahead, don't drive fast. Same with tight gaps. The tighter the gap, the slower the speed.

Emily is definitely making a nice progress there. I think that learning to drive can't avoid being a little overwhelming, especially in the beginning. The car's inertia, coupled with the whole fuss to do with the clutch, makes it a pretty unintuitive vehicle to command for pretty long time. I think that the ideal would be to keep practicing starts, accelerations, and stops (from various speeds) for a number of lessons before moving on to things like traffic lights, but then again, who'd have the time for that, right? Also, it might get boring, which eventually wouldn't help learning either. So, getting just a little bit overwhelmed probably can't be helped. On the whole, though, Emily did really well. It's nice to see how she treats the observation as part and parcel of driving, rather than a foreign element that needs to dealt with as an obligatory formality. I was wondering if a marker on the top centre of the steering wheel (somewhat akin to the strip placed on the driving wheel in many racing cars) wouldn't help some student drivers -- including Emily -- be more aware of their steering angle, especially at very low speeds. Again, thank you to both Emily and Richard for filming this.
