The CrossFit Games -- (games.crossfit.com)
When Salo stepped on the floor in the final men's heat, the energy in the building increased noticeably. The Finn has been a legend since he almost beat fellow star Chris Spealler in the first event of the 2009 Games, but a recent run of bad luck has kept Salo from the spotlight.
At the 2011 Games he was injured in the first event and withdrew from the competition, and in 2012 he was a spectator with a bad knee.
In 2013, Salo leads the Europe Regional after taking but 5:21 to perform Jackie. But perhaps Salo's return to form isn't the real story. Salo might have been victorious, but the level of competition in Europe is increasing: his time was but one second faster than second-place Christer Idland of Norway and two seconds faster than Lacee Kovacs of Hungary. In all, 11 men finished within 16 seconds of Salo, who had three thrusters killed by his judge.
But Salo still finished first, and he actually had no idea Kovacs was gaining on him with butterfly reps as he kipped out his pull-ups one bar over. Salo's work on the rig is relentless, but he doesn't use the butterfly technique, and Kovacs was able to make up ground over the 30 reps.
"I didn't think anything," Salo said when asked if he knew Kovacs was stalking him. "I just think about my own performance."
Salo was all smiles after the event-almost giddy-and he showed more excitement than the stoic Finn is known for.
Thinking back to standing outside the barrier last year, Salo said it was "awesome" to be back on the floor.
"That was two years ago the last time I competed," he said.
He said that the workout went as planned, and while he thinks his time will stand up to competitors in other regions, he believes some will go under 5:20.
In a video released shortly before the event, Salo said he will be happy with his performance if he does his best; placement doesn't matter.
But after winning Jackie, Salo revealed his true goal: "I'm here to win."

how are those allowed? is that a common pull up in the cross fit deal?

Rob Morales During a workout like this the focus is high intensity. Intensity = power. Force x distance divided by time. Who can get the work done the fastest. A lipping pull-up meets the same range of motion as a strict chin over bar pull-up but can be done much quicker and more efficiently if you will, by using a gymnastic kip. CrossFit workouts commonly will also include strict pull-ups, weighted pull-ups, etc. it's not a matter of it being easier or cheating, but rather a matter of stimulus. Hopefully that clears it up for you.

@@codyvellatraining It's also a matter of lipping is fucking stupid on multiple levels and is one of the leading causes of injury in crossfit right up there with idiots never actually being taught how to lift properly because their teachers also have no idea what they're doing And YES it IS cheating because you're skipping procedure and amping up your chances of hurting yourself instead of doing it right. There's a reason Crossfit is such a joke compared to what it was when it first started and that's because form go thrown out for function
1:11 "It's wet dream for us crossfitters" ha ha ha, can't believe he said that
Thanks for putting these up so fast! WHoooooo, cant wait to see the rest of this!!!!!!!!!
Mikko Salo is a beast!! one of the few who could really push Rich Froning on his day. 2013 games are going to be good!! :)
"When animals surrender, they go laying on their back...and from then on i decided i am never going to lay on my back...its a sign of weakness and surrender." -Mikko Salo
I sort of agree, Hra. But when I think about what Crossfit is, efficiency of movements along with intensity, the butterfly kip makes sense. Get the chin over the bar in as fast and efficient ways as possible. I find the butterfly to take more pulling strength, but you go faster which also means maybe I get tired faster. But hey, the pullups get knocked out faster too. Mikko IS the man, and I want to see him take the podium at the Games.
Thankssss alot for upload
The fact he almost does his pull ups strict makes him bad ass
Kipping instead on butterfly pull-ups? Mad respect!
Why doesn't he learn the butterfly technique?
Mikko is same me, Fireman Generation and Crossfitter !!!!
Please tell us that Mikko is getting an invitational for the 2014 Games!!!
THE MAN!!! Whis that i could se it live, I am a huge fan
Mikko is so sick
"a wet dream for all crossfitters" at 1:12....hilarious
Finish's, walks away like a boss.
OMG!!!! Here comes MIKO!!!!....
My IDOL. Go check the Document of Mikko, amazing human being.
A lot of people knock the kipping pull-up and butterfly technique and I understand why but these guys at regionals are awesome athletes and in amazing shape. Most of these guy could do strict pull-ups all day long and those kipping pull ups are more of a gymnastics movement than anything. They do it not because they can't do pull-ups but to move fast and efficiently.

Michael Nguyen you are correct
Adrien Tapia in the SE leading everyone with a 5:10 so far!
mikko salo the pride of Europe in crossfit! shame his from Finland not Sweden:(
He doesn't need to do that shit, I really don't understand why butterflying has to belong to crossfit to begin with. Anyways Mikko is the fucking man.
Butterfly pull ups are for women and Americans. Not Mikko and Scandinavians.
wow that was crazy !!!mikko
3 no reps and still busts it open. Go Mikko!!
#europeiscoming
...and crossfit athletes everywhere will weep
❤
oh my god i think its hilarious how they named the wod's after women. "Wait so you did Jackie in 5:21? Wow you must not last long in bed"
Yeah well you said it dude, I don't eve know too much about crossfit. But isn't kipping supposed to help you get you up there, I mean many people trying to learn a muscle up for example use it? But anyhow crossfit is crossfit and Mikko likes to do his pull ups the way he does, and I like it. And you got the right attitude about that! :D
"...anything that left you flat on your back looking up at the sky asking 'What the fuck happened to me?' derserved a female's name." -Greg Glassman
Mikko had a pretty judge =D
increadible technique is mostly the reason he won,the rest athletes are not that technical, yet strong enough to get close to him..his thrusters and row are perfectly excecuted
Rowing is 3/5 of the workout. What'd you expect?
:d didn't hear that one from him, thanks for info. I also find it amusing how people flagged me for spam on my comment lol
Go Lacee!!!
Beast
WHY NO REP???? 4:12
one day mikko will learn to butterfly...
He's kipping..
Mikko is the shit! But think how fast he would be if he did do the butterfly...the guy next to him made up some major ground on the pullups because of it
Mikko's judge is hawt.
wow
Did the crossfitter get his ego hurt?
fuck yeah mikko!!!!
yeah.... that's not very "strict" but at least less kip
Haha you muppet. Please tell me you are trolling. This is one of the more accessible workouts, in other events these guys can all power clean 300lbs+, do many bar muscle ups etc so pipe down and move along...Go ahead and try the workout (1000m row, 50 thrusters 45lb and 30 pull ups) and see if you get 10 minutes...
With Strict pull ups. Y'all crossfitters are fucked... MIKO!!!
that can't be good for your body... like seriously.
Mika Salo > Mikko Salo
That was embarrassing to watch. I mean row for three minutes lift THE BAR a few times and then do some kipping pull ups? I mean I probably couldn't do it faster than this guy but this is what passes for being "the fittest"?
