I visited the Ski resort in the Cairngorms about five years ago and photographed my first Snow Bunting in the very same car park. I dipped on the Crested Tit and the Scottish Crossbill while I was there but the Red Squirrels more than made up for it. Scotland is without any doubt, my favorite part of the world. 👍 Aberdeen and Deeside is on the agenda for July 2024. I can't wait.

I am so inspired by your wildlife photography Dan. I only came across your videos a couple of weeks ago, but now I'm an avid watcher.Your easy going manner is a joy and you make everything look so easy when we all know it can be anything but. As soon as these storms go past I will be booking a couple of hide visits to Gigrin Farm and then up to Yorkshire.

Dan, crossbills are awesome! We sometimes get the Red Crossbills irrupting from Canada. Last year was better, with dozens at local hotspots. This winter only a handful here and there. They are nearly identical to the Scottish that you saw. If you're lucky and find a flock they can be very outgoing. Last winter my first siting was a small flock that I spent 20 minutes with, very close, with no one else around. All of a sudden, "jip jip jip" calls and they were gone! My wife and I went out birding yesterday and got a fleeting glimpse of a female, and heard maybe a few more. Your dog is so well behaved! Did she go with you up to where the hares were in the previous video?

Wow I would love to experience irruption of crossbills I bet that’s awesome. They are such an intriguing bird with that very unique shaped bill, nothing quite like it. Our little frenchie is well behaved but when on the mountain with the hares she stayed on a leash with my wife well back from the hares. All the best 👍🏻

Good one Dan. I absolutely love that area, been a few times. You do get Cresties at loch garten in the spring, they come to the feeders just on the entry path. If your lucky enough to get a ray of light coming through the canopy, otherwise it's poor light. I have often considered a winter visit but never took the bite. Maybe one year.

Wonderful part of the country, great for birding and flying my Red Tailed Hawk, first went to Loch Garten back in the 80s for the Osprey but the highlight was 3 Crested Tits . Crossbills were always around at the Falconry Centre, had some wonderful views of them bathing in the sun in puddles, such vivid colours, sadly all before I had a camera, hope to get up the Northumberland coast when the storm goes away and photograph some Snow Bunting. Super video again Dan you put some miles in , cracking. Derek.

Hello Dan, super video. As some one just try to get in to wildlife/bird photography, (with no success). Been retired and have a limited budget I just like to ask are you using auto ISO is set your camera at 1/2000 and f2.8 them letting the camera chose the ISO? Love the 400mm f2.8 just so far out of my budget. I am shooting with a Nikon Z8 or Z9 with the 600mm f6.3 or 500mm pf with FTz.

  • @danwillis_photography

Thanks very much John, really appreciate it. The camera/lens combo you have got is awesome and will definitely yield fantastic results. In answer to your question I do use auto ISO. The light changes so frequently and rapidly in the uk it’s difficult but not impossible to do so. I also use exposure compensation to fine tune the camera as it can produce images on the bright side at times and equally for dark subjects it can underexpose. Hope that makes sense and all the best 👍🏻
