It's not always because the calf is starving its because they want comfort. It's like a form of stress relief but if you let it continue you will have calves with raw bloody ears...

The suckling urge is irresistible. Calves will suck on anything. They do it for comfort. If offered, a calf will eagerly suck on the fingers of a human.

Interesting, must admit, if given the chance to raise bottle calves again, would consider looking into bottle teat sized dummies (one for each calf) to use after the scheduled feeding for 10mins or so. Also, good point about reducing the flow rate of milk with each feed, maybe aiming for 6+ minutes rather that 3mins max to consume the allocated bottle! The idea of more regular, smaller feeds each day sound great too, though, for most, not practical. Lastly, just wish to point out to other viewers, when I have purchased bottle calves in the past, only small groups, and from auctions only. Any auction calf that arrives at another farm rather than a slaughter house is a lucky calf. Any auction calf that is 'loved' after sale (mine were for 18mths, except one, who is still on farm at 9yrs!) Is in a league of their own really. Thanks for sharing your findings though, certainly substance for thought here if I do get more down the track.

I will point out that human babies have a similar behavior in the form of thumb sucking, which babies have been observed doing on ultrasound images prior to birth and kids will continue to do after birth, even when they have a cuddly mom who breast feeds them on demand. So explain THAT before going off on a tangent over calves.

Go ahead and starve yourself. Your choice. Also vegans experience thyroid problems. So stay plant based and do us a favor.

Are there also studies showing how to control unwanted maternal behaviour in human 'children' who have been kidnapped? Sad video...

Dairy Queen Your reply reflects your disconnect and conditioning: you totally missed my point here. What is sad, is that 'dairy' creates the condition that denies a calf its natural bond with its mother, thus making it necessary to fix the unnecessary 'problem' of cross sucking. So yes: if bottles, pacifiers and teethers were applied in a situation in which a human baby had been forcibly seperated from its mother, that would be sad too.
