So, are we in a Cult? Exploring the Lines Between Faith and Cults
Welcome back to the Cross Points Podcast with your hosts, David and Orah! In this thought-provoking episode, we dive into the fascinating and sometimes controversial topic of cults and how they compare to mainstream religious practices.
Key Discussion Points:
Personal Stories and Experiences: Orah shares a personal story about someone trying to draw her into a cult-like experience, while David reveals a significant experience from his past involving a youth group and a cult-like organization.
Understanding Cults: We discuss the definition of a cult and explore behaviors and practices that might be seen as cultish, such as raising hands in worship, speaking in tongues, anointing with oil, and more.
Christian Practices Explored: David provides biblical references and explanations for practices like laying on of hands, anointing with oil, and other charismatic practices, emphasizing their symbolic nature and roots in scripture.
Personal Reflection on a Cult-Like Experience: David shares a detailed story from his youth involving the Institute of Basic Life Principles (IBLP) and its cult-like characteristics, highlighting the manipulation through a mix of truth and extra-biblical rules.
Christianity vs. Cults: We reflect on how true Christianity is about freedom in Christ, not legalistic control, and emphasize leading with love, humility, and service rather than manipulation.

Bill Gothard..... That's what the Duggar family from 19 kids and counting were into. Some of their daughters have written books about having to disentangle their faith.
