I made this hat and I just love it! It was easy to make and it didn’t take a long time. I leave in Ohio so the weather is unpredictable at times. It can go from 50 degrees today and be -10 degrees tomorrow. This hat saved my face and head from the cold. I’ll be making it again for me and gifts. Thank you!

I decided to try this with #4 Caron One Pound, color Deep Violet. It is a yarn with a lot of body, so it took 18 rounds on the neck to reach 8 inches, and that was giving a little stretch to the project. I almost abandoned it as it was so stiff until I got to the 8 inches. It's going to be lovely and toasty on an icy cold day this winter. Or a windy cold day. Next time I will use another #4 yarn brand, but a little thinner to get a looser drape. I've noticed darker colors in many acrylic yarns have more body than light colors of the same yarn.

Caron pound is very dense. I made a Balaclava with it. The color was stunning. It heavy and hot. You can loosen your tension or go with a J hook and you should get more drape.

I believe you would count that initial ch3 as one dc. It establishes the height AND acts as your first dc. Some other projects, you'll find that people don't count the ch3 as a dc, but instead just to establish height. It varies from person to person, project to project. When in doubt, just follow what the tutorial says. Also, you are correct about the 70. You should have 70 dc all-around for the neck portion
