It would depend on your neck size. I can tell you that the repeat is a multiple of 3+2 for the starting chain. So any chain that meets that will work.

The starting chain needs to be a multiple of 3+2. So decide how long you want the scarf and then find a starting chain the matches that chain count. I am not sure off the top of my head what a child size scarf length should be.
Do you have a hat pattern that would complement this scarf?
