CRKT Woods Chogan Tomahawk Modified

Ойын-сауық

First day in the woods with my modified CRKT Woods Chogan Tomahawk. Loving the feel and speed I can get with swing this thing. Much improved over the original design. I also cook a steak over a split wood fire! YUM

Went ahead and cut the hammer off mine today, polished the head sanded burned and oiled the handle, thought of buying their nabo t-hawk but I don't need another axe so I just modified the chogan. I like the balance and feel a lot better without the hammerhead and it still has a flat surface to hammer with. Good video

Great videob brother. You're making me miss my days of running around in the North Central Ohio woodlands. Not much in the way of forest lands in the Phoenix area. I have to travel 2 hours north to the high country to play these days. I carry an H&B Forge (out of the Shiloh, Ohio area) medium camp axe for my cutting needs. Purchased a CRKT Woods Kangee about the same time the Chogan was released. Thought about removing the spike as well but purchased the H&B instead. Thanks for sharing

The fatigue you feel isn’t necessarily because it’s too heavy, perhaps your wrists need some strengthening? My t hawk does the trick! I put a better edge on it and wrapped the neck (just below the head) with some hefty paracord to serve two purposes. No.1 is to protect from overstrike and no.2 is that I’ve found any extra paracord is good for business.

The knots were more of a factor than the hammer head. He split the log just fine but when he twisted it instead of pulling apart, the knots held it together.

Nice Review, thank you. Do you remember how long you soaked your hawk in the vinegar? I reground and sanded mine, did some mustard designs, then soaked it for over three hours and it reacted oddly. It only got moderately gray around the bevel, the rest of it partly turned yellowish, or a little grayish, much of the mustard patterns faded, and partly did nothing. Right now I'm wondering if my vinegar got old or something, or do I need an overnight soak or what. I've successfully de-rusted and forced patinas on a dozen or more tools, but never saw a reaction like this? Any ideas?

Nice video That's some tough, gnarly wood. I had a Chogan and it was stolen. I just ordered another one but decided on the Nobo without the hammer pol. I agree it's a bit heavy for a hawk. I like the rest of the design of the head. I prefer hawks b/c you can remove the head for fine work and the handle can easily be replaced in the field. Can't do that with an axe.

I have the same gut feelings as you when it comes to the hammer, no need for it to be that big, also makes it lighter and easier to grasp when the handle is off. I was hoping the ergonomics would improve and definitely knew the speed would increase, which is what the Chogan needs. So was always hesitant in cutting it down. Can I cut down the hammer with a hacksaw? Or would I need to use a grinder? Also great video, that is some really dense hard wood there, like what we have in my country. I see a lot of people on KZread batoning, cutting, splitting and feather sticking wood etc but they use softwood on the most part, which is not really putting their tools through a real test. Also many people are cutting green wood which again is softer or they cut through wood that has perfectly straight grained softwood with no knots and usually using a perfectly sized tree stump, again they are not truly putting their tools through a real scenario of being out in the woods with no tree stump, hard, seasoned, knotted and gnarly wood. So good on you for (keeping it real) a "saying that I think many people have forgotten these days". I do have one thought that I think may increase the performance of the Chogan. That is by using a 22 inch handle. I noticed the Cold Steel Pipe Hawk uses a 22" handle and a number of people have done comparisons with the Chogan. Which is kinda unfair, because a longer handle will give more power, and I think because the Chogan has thicker cheeks than the Cold Steel Pipe Hawk. It needs the extra power to force the head deeper into the wood to give the Chogan the true justice it deserves. I think the extra 3" of handle length may be just what the Chogan needs to excel to that next level? So I am considering buying a Cold Steel Pipe Hawk with a 22" handle. And seeing if the Cold Steel Pipe Hawk handle will fit on the Chogan head. Just my thoughts and observations, as I am weighing up between these two hawks as my go-to-tool in my pack. If you do test this out, I would love to hear and see a video with your tests, thoughts and gut feeling on it. Cheers in advance :) Also if you use a good frying pan with no handle as a plate and have a pot/pan gripper handle. The plate could serve two purposes for you. Just an idea? Subscribed :) Update just cut mine with a hacksaw, took about an hour lol. But am loving it so far. Have more testing to do, and looking forward to it. Cheers

Suggestion: I've always found the round shaft of the handle to roll in my hand (causing the blade to deflect in one direction or the other) during camp duties. Love to throw them, but a terrific mod for a hawk is an oval shaped haft like a hatchet or axe has. It doesn't effect throwing capabilities and greatly increases stability while using it around camp or for craft work. I agree with you...the hammer end had to go. It's just as effective for pounding if the hammer is sawed or ground off flat. Have ya seen Bushcraft Bartons Russian Viking Tomahawk? kzread.info/dash/bejne/lqx3z6mFhdqWmpc.html

So hamners axes hachets ets are levers.. Once the weighted end is brought to celocity IT does the work. Theres pros n cons to removing head weight. Good vid but everyone please really WEIGH out yur pros n cons before you cut up your axe heads and etc. AND fatigue may be due to lack of training and exercise as well .

That splitting method doesn't work on all pieces... notice the knots in the wood? Try splitting pieces without knots unless you have to. No sense in wearing yourself out. I can tell you're breathing hard. That said, I love the mod. Might try that with mine.

Say Heah, If you have the means and know how, I say Do It. But I don't, so I pay uppa'kazoo, heh heh heh. But I got my 2Hawks for very reasonable prices. Yeah, I got a copy of the Nessmuk Double Bit Hatchet and the Warbeast Tomahawk. I had to figure it out. Nessmuk was alot smaller man than I so his Double Bit Hatchet was Custom Built for him. A copy made mine look very small, But seriously, Its a Lightweight that punches like a Heavyweight, Its No Toy. Then my Warbeast, It has three sharp edges for deeper penetration and pulls out easier, I like that. But the Beauty is, Its Art out of the box. Yeah, Devin Price make Functional Art. my 2Hawks are made out of 6150, yeah, and not 5160. Both come with quality leather sheaths, Infact I got my Tomahawk without the wrap on the handle, I like simple. and no hole in my handle, so take apart is easier. Infact, I like using my Double Bit Hatchet with my Rodent 5 in my leather dangler that match my Double Bit Hatchet, I have many other knives to use with the Double Bit aHatchet, Plus I could team up my Warbeast Tomahawk in the same way. It chops almost as good as my Hatchets, but alot lighter. But yeah, I admire guys like you that know how to customize their tools, I enjoyed your review.,,.

Awesome mod’ I did the same thing with both of mine 4yrs ago when I first bought them’ way overbuilt’ tomahawks are supposed to be light and handy’ the hammer poll cut off shaves much needed ounces and puts the weight right around the sweet spot’ and honestly how much hammering am I going to do in the bush that I can’t do with it after modified? Besides hammering in tent pegs and wood splitting wedges’ I’m not using it as a classic hammer’ it can still drive nails just as good! But for the most point I’m practicing traditional BushCraft and survival like woodsmen and natives from years gone by’ out of the package unmodified its like swinging a freight train’ very tiresome and clunky’ tomahawks by there very nature were the first “leatherman” tools’ and as a weapon very deadly on there own and if you ever thrown a Hawk’ and watched it hit home you can see how much power and force they deliver when landed’ there isn’t a human alive who could take one to there chest or back and walk away from it’ there’s a reason the Native Americans and woodsman carried them as there sidearm during that era’ once you learn and respect it’ there isn’t anything you can not do with one.

& now he found out why he should not have cut the hammer head off of it , just ruined a great tomahawk , & just 2 more pointers never carve into a tomahawk handle it can make the wood crack then there gos your handle & you should have some kind of rap just under the head so if you strike the handle under the head it pads the impacted so you don’t break the handle leather or some kind of strong paracord not the cheap Walmart kind .
