    I have done some moderate DMing in the past and want to try running something out of a book sometime. If this one isn't for 'beginners', what campaigns would you say I should try before I run this one?

    The Starter Set has one of the best written Linear moduals, "The Lost Mines of Phandelver". A truely great story that is easy to run and Affordable. Again, it's a linear story, but not "Railroady". Check it out and Enjoy.

    It depends what your strengths & weaknesses are as a GM. This isn’t a hard campaign to run if you’re comfortable with the role playing aspect. Otherwise, yes, as Dennis says, The Starter Set is ideal.

    I think waterdeep dragon heist can be a good one if you domt worry to much about the factions also into the witch light can be good if you dont mind a bit of roleplay

    Like all official D&D adventures, you'll need the fifth edition core rulebooks (Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual). But you don't need the other Critical Role books. -Theo

  • @TheGallantGoblin

    @TheGallantGoblin

    Not in the traditional sense. Alyxian could break that way certainly, and the other factions and rivals could also be antagonists, so who the villains end up being largely depends on what actions the PCs take. -Theo

    @@TheGallantGoblin I can see it being more difficult from rp in terms of the other party. But the other party is only in the story as much as you want them to be. I also kinda think a party that is basically your dm PCs is a good starting point you can shape them however you want.

    Yeah, I’m gonna say 5e would have been fine without Critical Role. Only watching video because I support Theo and his channel. Matt Mercer is a good DM but the hobby doesn’t NEED him to be a success. Not wanting to hate on him but that statement irked me.

    I definitely wouldn’t be as invested or as passionate about DMing for my job if it hadn’t been for Critical Role. While I’m not a voice actor, it’s something that I’ve imagined myself doing. I also love to see the way the stories they all create weave around each other. Watching Critical Role can really be like a master class at times, when you catch that little nugget of info. There aren’t that many other really watchable or otherwise consumable live-play D&D games. I’ve watched others and the production just isn’t as good, which makes it had to keep up with, or some of them charge money to watch. There’s just SO MUCH Critical Role to watch. Does 5e NEED him and his gang? Well, no, but I think the game is much more popular because of CR, and people are doing more because of it.
