Critical Reef Theory with CRT: Episode 1

In this first episode of Critical Reef Theory, we discuss CRT's Concoction. Leveraging the latest research in the field of aquaculture, and coral restoration, CRT has created a new methodology that has shown promising effects at optimizing coral nutrition and water quality.

As someone who has studied operations research, I like your approach and analysis of this arcane hobby. Optimizing reef outcomes subject to constraints is a very useful concept here. You have put some thought into this, not just a recipe, or methodology. You have the potential to have a large impact on the community. Great overview. Keep it up. Subscribed.

This is awesome. I just recently tried the zeovit system and it sure does work. Kind of got tired of the zeovit reactor. First you need an expensive reactor, then it needs to mature, then a nightly shake. In less than 2 months the zeolites are spent and you need to start again. Your method seems much simpler and everything makes sense.

Thank you for sharing Allan. I love your thread in r2r and your beyond the reef interview. Two questions for you. Are you still feeding two times a week? And at what temperature do you keep the concoction? The room temperature could reach 86 fahrenheit in the summer at where I live. Thank you and looking forward to your next video!

I make this mixture once a week and typically use it all within 3 days. I keep the mixture at room temperature, but I do believe certain bacteria proliferate better at different temps. It is also best to keep in mind best practices and to ensure a sterile working environment when dealing with this.

Hey Allan, love the video. Well done. SPS reefing has led me to do something similar to what your are doing. I haven't been mixing or aerating my concoction though. Makes sense to do so. How long do you aerate before your initial usage of that particular batch? Thanks, Rich

  • @crt_reefs

I aerate for 24 hours before I begin using the concoction. This allows the bacteria to begin fermenting the ingredients. After this I sustain the culture by topping it off with additional fresh sw and resources. In theory this can be sustained perpetually, but since we are not in a sterile lab environment I recommend to restart the culture every few weeks to minimize potential contamination.

Great video, Allan! Learned a lot! I was wondering, would using a magnetic stirrer for keeping the concoction aerated work as well? Or is an airstone the best way to go?

Hi Allan, Can you provide me a list of how much of each thing to add in to a container and in what intervals? What air pump you use? What container you use? If you keep it sealed and drill a hole in the top of said container? How do you sterilize everything before use? What concoction sets with which specific products you find to be the best and safest I.e no rtn? How you would keep this when the ambient temp of the room is around 69 degrees? How many corals you would like in a system to start using this? Example around 30 frag sized corals in a 150 gallon system is that too little or just right? Can you use the moonshiner method with this feeding? How do you get the food out of the container without contamination? What specific syringe you are using to feed the concoction to the tank? Thank you 😁

Also curious if there is a certain nitrate or phosphate level that will make you back off on this feeding or perform WC, or if you just run the UHN (ultra-high nutrient) system? :)

  • @crt_reefs

In theory, this method should lower nitrates and phosphates in the water column due to the addition of live bacteria. You can actually achieve a ULNS, emulating reef conditions while at the same time providing a nutritious live food source!

@@jackson6745 it’s been reported back to me on several occasions from different folks using my method. I even noted the effects on my thread. The key is to get a strong bacteria culture going so that they can cycle all the nutrients thrown at them. We can correspond on r2r or IG if that is easier.
