What I didn't like about Nocturne vs Castlevania is several things. (Coming from someone who doesn't know anything about the games.) 1. Continuity. I saw so many vampires crying water tears when before that was only Alucard because he was half human. That's just one example. 2. They completely ruined forge masters. Before it was so unique and personal for the master to summon night creatures. Hector had his hammer to create a specific pitch, while Isaac had a knife. And as Miranda said, "This life takes its toll" meaning that the magic came at a cost. Now there's just a machine??? That Hell delivered by FedEx or something??? It would've been so much cooler if the priest was actually a forge master, claiming he was purging people of demons when actually summoning them. 3. It took the sacrifice of an entire town to open a portal to Hell and now you just need a book and a sorcerer to chant some bullshit. No cost, no agency. 4. They completely sidelined Rictor like he was a minor character. Trevor at least felt like a core character that the others relied on, even in a half drunk state. And he went instantly from 0 to 100 because he "just had to". Boooo, where is the character development? Where is him healing over the trauma of losing his mom? Not there at all but gets his magic back for wtf reasons. 5. Everyone can do magic now, you ain't special. And where did all these other Gods come from? 6. I hate the main villian. The Lioness is so disappointing after Dracula. Her motivation is the same as every generic vampire. Rule to world and enslave humans as livestock. Oooo, okay Carmilla, calm down. Dracula had an actual motive to start a war with the humans. He was built up so well in such a short amount of time you actually empathized with him. She's just evil and God-like powerful without any build up or story except through annoying info dumping. What happened to show don't tell? It all just comes across as forced and bland. The show used to have great characters, a great main villian who is felt long long long after he is killed off. 7. You felt for Alucard immensely after he lost his mom and had to kill his dad, and his only two friends left him all alone after. Just so much better characters and story in Castlevania. I don't empathize with any of the new ones because they failed to establish them well. I don't care about these random mothers they keep killing off better than Disney because they never made you care. I loved Lisa instantly and cried when she died. I don't even remember Rictor's mom's name.

Mmmmmmm damn you hit the nail on every head! You were 100% correct in everything. The show did suffer from a lot of continuity issues. I even was asking those same questions 😂 especially when it came to the night creatures. It did feel rushed and there should have been more character development. I still loved the show but I am aware that the reason I like it is very superficial 1. Richter 2. Anime vibes. I'm completely aware of this and maybe a little bit ashamed 😂 I think it also turned for me when Richter faced off against Olrox and he had his panic attack. I know people called him a coward and they're probably right in that instance because he left his family there. However, it felt like a very real moment for the character and something that he would have to overcome, the shame of it. I also wished they would have delved a little bit more into that because he was very scared due to it being a very powerful vampire but never once considered that his family might be dead? He left them there and never looked back. Why would he have a reason to think there's still alive. I would have loved if we saw the turmoil of that and the relief on his face when he realized that they were alive and just see him grow as a result. It felt like they didn't have enough time and didn't know if they were going to get reviewed and so they just tossed everything in.

    8. They made the Church and Christianity look like villains when in the games they are the ones who HELP THE BELMONTS save the world across the timeline all the way into the Sorrow games. Funny how Netflix can push an agenda so freely against Christianity despite History (both real and in Castlevania) telling a completley different story.

The show in general is just another case of "Skin Suiting". They took an existing property and slapped their own ideology into it because they know the company wouldn't risk money on an original show with this stuff, and they know an original show with this stuff would bomb. So they needed to latch onto an established name to try and add some level of legitimacy to the message they want to push. Of course they usually mask this as a "Subversion of Expectations", but at this point the subversion IS the expectation. A show like one piece is the actual subversion these days since it follows the source material. So of course they have to attack and try to silence anyone that has a problem with what they're doing. Pretty much standard operating procedure at this point.

I like how they make the revolution look like a modern peaceful protest. A really bloody revolution that happened during huge famin. They took a historical setting perfect for a Castlevania story with all the possibilities to show shades of gray, all sides of human nature and somehow managed to make it one of the bad parts of the show. And the show is full of things like this. Either the writers were incompetent or didn't prepare for writing this at all and didn't watch the original as a reference.

  • @starofgalaxies

    @starofgalaxies

I always get nervous when a historical setting is put in a supernatural world. It seemed like vampires were a pretty well known entity, but it has no influence on the world in a meaningful way. It might come down to my preference for thought experiments like if vampires were a well known nuisance how would that have changed history, if they fought on a human side in a war or played both sides that would have an impact and would change things. It's pretty boring to say they just kept to themselves until this one event and then disappeared again to not have any impact on the world so it turns out exactly the same as ours. Same with magic. Annette mentioned it was part of her bloodline, so where are the other welders? Surely she wasn't the only one who got put in this situation that triggered her abilities. Or that this gift would've been taught, she recognized where the gift was from so clearly there was knowledge about it, would've been different if the god heard her prayer and gifted right then and there. And why if this gifted existed wasn't it used before to defend her people? Why now? Did someone make a deal in order to be spared? Was the last known user murdered in order to prey on the undefended people? I have a lot of questions and a lot of it is pointless because they don't feel the need to explain why despite magic and vampires slavery still happened the exact same way it did in our world why everything happened the exact same despite the impact of magic.

Yes, a Belmont character being cucked in his own show is a problem. There is a reason you play as a Belmont in the majority of the Castlevania games. It is jarring to watch the supposed main character become a side character in a series where his family name means something. It's a legacy of family members who have fought vampires. Nope. Let's turn it into the Annette story instead.

No, people dislike this because RICHTER fucking BELMONT (THE MAIN, AND I MEAN *MAIN* CHARACTER OF CASTLEVANIA NOCTURNE ) got less screentime as opposed to THE FUCKING *SIDE* CHARACTERS. My guy. DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT THE *MAIN* COMPONENTS OF A BASIC STORY EVEN ARE? Also, putting in more characters in a story doesn't excuse the poor and utter garbage writing of Castlevania Nocturne. Just because you introduce more characters in a story that doesn't mean that the roles of "main" and "side" character magically disappear. The fact that Annete, Maria, Edouard and Drolta got FAR MORE screentime, lore and character development (which was pretty mid at best for each of them, some got more some got less) than the main character and the main big bad Ersebet, is and should be considered a concerning thing. This is a PRETTY OBVIOUS INDICATOR THAT SOMEONE WHO WROTE THE SCRIPT FOR THE SHOW HAS: A) NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE DOING SO THEY ARE TYPING THE SHIT THAT THEY HOPE WILL STICK B) IS MOST LIKELY EITHER BLIND AND/OR JUST A BRAINROTTED MORON Let's deservingly butcher the characters now, shall we? Maria - a girl who openly calls Richter a dick and is just waaaaay too mean to him for no apparent reason whatsoever even though he was still traumatized earlier in the show. Not to mention how big of a mouth she has, she might as well speak for Richter himself. Also, is the swearing really that necessary? Like, I didn't mind it in the original Castlevania, but here it really shouldn't have been as prominent. + She and Annette talk like modern fcking people about the current day shit you can't escape from at all these days in media and how EVERY SINGLE FUCKING THING IN EXISTENCE NOW IS ABOUT RACISM. Like, holy shit can you NOT for 5 FUCKING MINUTES MY GOD. Annette - Honestly the biggest offender in all of this right there with along with Edouard. 1st and foremost THE ENTIRE LORE OF THIS SHOW WAS MADE TO TAILOR HER AND EDOUARD'S EXISTANCE. IF YOU THINK FOR A SECOND THAT I'M BEING DELUSIONAL HERE, THEN IDK YOU MIGHT AS WELL TAKE A LOOK AT THE ACTUAL CANONICAL CASTLEVANIA LORE TO CHECK FOR YOURSELF. My second question is why have they RACE SWAPPED A ALREADY PRE-ESTABLISHED AND EXISTING CHARACTER FROM THE CASTLEVANIA GAMES? Ummmm I'm pretty sure that there was NO need for that and it's just stupid at the end of day. It was unecessary and it shouldn't have happened at all to begin with. What's more is that throughout the entire show she was WAAAAAAY MORE INSUFFERABLE THAN Maria, which isn't a compliment to Maria but whatever... . Like why are you such a rude bitch? What's the point of you talking to someone when you're just going to act like a dick towards them and be a nuisance whilst opening your mouth every chance you get to say how hard your entire life has been just because you were black? PRETTY SURE THAT THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE WHO WEREN'T NECESARILY BLACK WHOM LED A ROUGH LIFE TOO, BUT THAT DOESN'T MATTER. SHE WAS A SLAVE. SHE WAS THIS. SHE HAD TO DO THIS. SHE HAD TO UNDERGO THAT. SHE IS A CAPABLE LEADER AND YET SHE STILL GIVES RICHTER SHIT FOR BEING A "CHILD" AND IGNORANT OR SOMETHING ALONG THOSE LINES. BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH. OK WE GET IT BY NOW. JUST SHUT TF UP. + Castlevania (in the games) had introduced religious concepts other than Christianity in their games such as, again, Maria. Her power "dominion over animals" is, from what I can remember, connected to the Chinese "four holy beasts" - 4 divine animals of great power. My point here is that although this idea comes from a different belief system entirely not related to Christianity at all when researched in detail is that this was never expanded upon as much because it wasn't and isn't as important as the main religion which weaves it's way throughout the history, design and storytelling of Castlevania, Christianity. (Sure Islam was introduced trough Isaac in the previous show but it wasn't delved too deep into because it simply wasn't as important for the story where Christianity has a stronger hold already.) Then where do these so called other gods come from? Annette's god ? Never explained in greater detail. He just exists and that's it ? Oh really now? And the cherry on top is the fact that SLAVERY, and POC HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE STORY OF CASTLEVANIA ACTUALLY. GO FIGURE. RIGHT? Which means, that all of that raceswapping was made MOSTLY IF NOT ONLY TO SPREAD A HEAVY LEFTIST AGENDA and to earn internet brownie points from the braindead masses which can't relate to a character if said character doesn't have the same skin color as themselves. WHAT AN AGE WE LIVE IN. DAMN. (Oh and if you were thinking of bringing out the "Isaac was raceswapped too" thing, there is a KEY DISTINCTION TO BE MADE HERE. The old Isaac from the games actually sucked and the raceswapped version of him from the previous Castlevania show ACTUALLY MADE HIM INTO A REAL HUMAN BEING WITH EMOTIONS, COMPLEX THOUGHTS AND HIS OWN AGENDA. He wasn't just a lazy political bias figure, self insert, POC annoying piece of shit like Nocturne's version of Annette. HE WAS WRITTEN WELL, WHILE ANNETT WASN'T. NOW THAT SCREAMS "BAD WRITING".) Edouard - just a race-baiting OC POC with no inherit use/utility in the show. From what we've seen now he was just useless, boring and serves just to be Annete's POC sidekick. Not much to say about his lackluster character. Just bad overall. Drolta - Wierd. Her character is just all over the fucking place. She was actually the least bad of all the characters mentioned here because (in my mind at least) had she been written better altogether she could have made for a really good and complex character, but no. She is just a puppet and brainless servnt to Ersebet, 0 actual character. Her visual design is REALLY, REALLY WIERD. What's up with the weird black sclera and NEON PINK EYES AND ENDS OF HER HAIR. Like what? She doesn't even look/feel like a Castlevania character. If anything she feels more like someone's poorly made POC self insert for the show which somehow weasled its way into the final version of the script. She had potential IMO, but the writers behind the show obviously didn't. The end. (also f in the chat for this character,... if you know you know.) And lastly, Richter did indeed get a powerup nearing the end of the first season of Nocturne but the way he got to it was bad, cliche, and poorly thought out. It was crammed and left out to be squished in later into the story after they realized that the POC side characters (Annette and Eduard and maybe even Drolta to an extent) needed their lore and stance of every single thing expanded upon more than the story and natural progression and development of the main character Richter. Also, yes Annette had a personality,... and a really shitty and insuferable one at that. Good riddance. I could write this all day and I still wouldn't be able to fit everything wrong with this abomination of a show, character, lore and design but it's pointless, because I can't change the shit writing of someone else, but I sure as hell can change my own by learning from the mistakes of these modern-day, unoriginal, boring and utterly appauling fucktards that call themselves writers. @@theshamanofenterprise7408

Honestly, these days words like "sexist", "racist", or "homophobic", have been used so much, and made to fit such a wide category of attitudes, you might as well just replace them with the word "smelly." Because from people like the writer of this article: "everyone who hates this series is smelly!" is a pretty good reflection of the level of their critical thinking and maturity! One of the first things I learned in my degree in philosophy, is that ad hominem arguements don't work. any argument, based just on the nature of one's opponent, the "You only think that because your a so and so", Drops any discussion below the level of intellectual discourse, and into the level of insult!

@@angrybrony Depends upon how it is used. If it is used in the sense: "so and so is a woke writer so you know their work will be rubbish." Then yes, the term "woke", would be adhominem, since it is a judgement made of the person, not of their work or their arguments. Sometimes it is indeed used in this way. If however the term "woke", is simply used as a synonym for a longer set of criticisms of a given piece of work rather than those who create it, placing social messaging, ideology and diversity before other writing concerns, featuring a set of specific tropes to support certain demographics while deliberately belittling and villainising others, then the term "Woke", is a reasonable critique of the work, the same way that if I wrote a story in which all the villains were one demographic and all the heroes another I could be called "racist", or a story which involved specific rants about the goodness of one sex or the evilness of the other, I could be called "sexist." Racism and sexism exist, just as wokeness exists, (indeed often wokeness evinces racism and sexism), however holding these terms of critique to their proper application, and remembering to criticise the art and not the artist, or the argument and not the one who makes it is usually the way to a better discussion. If one person thinks a work is good because it's diverse, and another thinks diversity doesn't matter, that is fine, they can have a disagreement. However, if one person just says: "you only think that because you're a right wing racist!" and the other says: "well you only think that because you're a left wing liberal lunatic!" That is the point arguement has left the path of reason. then again, asking the internet to follow the path of reason is probably a fruitless enterprise! :D.

Woop, I second all what you said 💯Characters in a fantasy world should be the ones driving the plot towards a denouement that will put us in situations we never experienced and/or give us solutions to them (I'm not pro "gratuitous amounts of zetsubou" without a solution to those dramas). If you get in the title the promise of a fantasy that you never saw before, but you get the entire opposite of it, then it's a narrative scam and people are in their right to be disgruntled. They shouldn't remind us that RL sucks and that your problems exist in this world too after promising to deliver a fantasy but then you twisted it to accommodate your views on RL stuff that is no longer the case. That's blatant propaganda, using actors to perform a play that reflects the untruths we are tired of fact checking left and right across the media. But the problem is not only that, the problem comes when you steal the original roles of former characters in a fantasy (for example, Red Riding Hood) and change it completely to push a story to hyperbolize a problem that has been already solved centuries and centuries ago on Earth (and that ironically is now hidden behind trafficking with them in secret behind a façade of CONSENT supported by the UN, to which they could care less, but I'm digressing here). When you steal characters from a former story to push a message that only entertains the ego of the producers, that will always cause backslash because people don't want to waste their time being lectured on stuff they drone about on every single damn series they put their talons on. They stole a franchise to lecture us about something the drone on and on non-stop, and that obviously will make people old and new to the franchise very angry. If it isn't a story about slavery using original characters and using real historic drama events like Assassin's Creed for example, the point of the series is moot. They are just rubbing in your face "we have the power to use whatever you remember and loved and twist it so that you either reject it or embrace it more". And truly, it made people to appreciate the retro story more than their neo-bs. In fact, I downloaded the games to play them in their original pristine state, with flimsy Caucasian princess in distress included (which, could have done more than just being a flower-pot of a character but whatevs). Anyway, they are creatively bankrupt and we only are receiving the scraps that fall from their mouths after they chow them thoroughly. Nobody wants to lap on the fallen curd from the mouth of culturally deficient curmudgeons that makes their entire personality about fixating on the colour of their navels. Their reactions to our backslash is just stuff to be written on a psychological series about "How to Cope with Criticism when your are a Narcissistic Self-Entitled Person 101" and "How to Survive to Break the Toys of your Fellow Kids".

Until his girlfriend got kidnapped, then he goes "OH HELLL NO" and on the way he starts alone but slowly and surely start rescuing more and more people (in this case the virgins witch included maria) they could've had all these amazing characters for example a deeper view on the kidnappend women, but i guess we cant have a man saving women in modern times!!!!!

As someone who values the art of written word and language in general, I can say without hesitation that the biggest issue I, and many others like me, have with modern writers and the shows/films they write for is how contrived the writing itself is in order to shoe horn in, for the sake of argument, let's say a gay character or a person of color. Their very presence is not the issue, it's whether or not they belong in that world, story, time period, whether they are depicted as real, well rounded people and not just a "token," if you will, etc. Same can be said for subject matters or allegories. Ex: Why is this film about dinosaurs and intergalactic space travel suddenly fixating on this character's combat with gender identity? There are more pressing matters at hand. But when you genuinely bring these criticisms up in a constructive manner, you're labeled a bigot or, as Brie herself so boldly put it, the show/film wasn't made for you. Okay. So then I don't watch it. Catch 22, bitch! You're still a bigot!

It's also annoying they pretend diversity never existed in anything before 2010, which undermines all the representation and diversity old shows and movies had, undoing decades of progress we made.

Ironically enough, there is a Fallout 4 mod out there that changes the demographics of the game to reflect 1950s America (very little to no black people and no women in roles of power) and amongst one of such changes was Preston Garvey becoming an Anglo-Saxon. People on Twitter and Reddit hated it and caused such an outrage about it, it got banned off every big mod site like NexusMods and Moddb for allegedly being "racist" and "sexist" despite the fact that the author clearly stated that the mod wasn't made to offend people and was simply meant to imagine Fallout 4 staying true to the retro-futurism of the 50s that the series had been using for so long. It's funny, because there's also plenty of mods that change the demographics of games to be entirely black and/or female and there's no outrage over any of those. It just shows you how many people are buying into ideology to the point that they see the double-standard they are presenting as completely moral and just.

I immediately asked my friend if she had done any research and after 2 minutes of internet investigation, found that only about 10% of the students in law school are black - soooooooo, the percentage of black attorneys directly reflects the numbers actually going to law school. The issue isn't lack of opportunity or representation - it's what minorities tend to make their career goals - in the black community, it's heavily weighted on trying to be a rapper or pro athlete (I know this from my time helping out in the inner city with my black doctor friend's organization who is trying to give black youths different aspirations - professional aspirations).

Totally agreed. Most of what people decide to do in life has to do with what they're influenced by in their community. For example, a lot of Caribbean children are encouraged to be doctors, lawyers, accountants, nurses, firemen etc. There's also a sect of the Jamaican community that aspires to be track stars because, I know it sounds silly but, most Jamaicans are born with that natural ability to become sprinters. It's the same with Chinese and Africans and science or business management. In the US you also see a lot of old school. Chinese people run the restaurants that their families did or help them do it. There's a strong sense of community and family and duty to your parents in the culture. It also depends on your stand in society. But now with social media and the internet, Brie Larson's comments came off as very ignorant and backhanded to imply that black Americans would not get the opportunity to see these movies as if they are SUPPOSED to be interested in it because it's a love letter to them. She thinks they wouldn't get an opportunity to see it because she thinks they're too poor or stupid. That's how she came off sounding. It sounds as though she has an image of minorities in her mind and it's not a very good one. So yes she does come off his very white savior and that's what turns people off. Also, as you said with the Democratic and reflection of such, We have to consider the distribution of people based on region and state. A lot of people don't take this into account. Apparently she doesn't either and that's why some actors need to take a humble pill, because it shows how closed off they are from the rest of the regular world.

For anyone in the comments still unfamiliar with the three games mainly referenced by Nocturne, spoilers ahead for Bloodlines, Rondo of Blood, and Symphony of the Night as to why Nocturne season 1 was ultimately a bad adaptation. Also, spoilers for Nocturne season 1. 1. In order of game release date, it was Rondo, Bloodlines, then Symphony. Timeline-wise, the events of Rondo were around 1792, 1793-ish, Symphony about five years after, and Bloodlines supposedly 1917. The first intentional mistake Nocturne makes is positioning the witch Drolta and the rise of the resurrected Bathory (mistranslated as Bartley in Bloodlines) during Richter's era instead of 1917, thereby forcing the Nocturne series to tell not only the combined Rondo/Symphony story as originally expected, but also share screentime with a ham-fisted time-displaced Bloodlines storyline. 2. Moving Bathory and Drolta out of time takes away the ability to tell the story of John Morris and Eric Lecarde in the future, and tangentially takes away the ability to use an adaptation of Bram Stoker's story in that telling as backstory for Morris. 3. Rondo has historically been touted as the best "Classic-vania," purely action-adventure platforming game without the Metroid-style "search action" key-lock mechanisms later games in the series like Symphony popularized. It had a fairly simple plot, however generic it was, told partly through anime-style cutscenes - Dracula's minions kidnapped certain village maidens for sacrifice to finish his resurrection and Richter is tasked to rescue them and stop him. Two of the maidens, Tera and Iris, have _zero_ powers and _do absolutely nothing_ in the fight. One of the maidens is Maria, who was captured _because_ she has powers and becomes a playable character after you rescue her, though you have to start a brand new game afterwards to explicitly choose her path. The fourth maiden is Annette, who has _zero_ powers and was only captured _because_ she is Richter's fiancée and explicitly used to bait Richter. With that being said, the choice to make Tera be Maria's mother wasn't necessarily a bad one. The choice to make Tera a Speaker in the show also wasn't even that far out of left field. It gave her a bit of presence, but ultimately detracted from Richter and Maria being awesome. The way more egregious mistake Nocturne makes is giving _Annette_ powers and agency and making her anything other than "Richter's fiancée captured by the enemy to be used as bait." It doesn't matter how that sounds. _The whole point of Annette in the game is to literally bait Richter and nothing else._ No random Edouard character that never existed, no Caribbean slave ancestry that never existed, no miraculously hassle-free trans-Atlantic trip to find the Belmonts, just a purely passive damsel-in-distress character explicitly there _because_ she's _Richter's fiancée_ and not some virtue signal. 4. Ignoring for a second that not every Castlevania game features named Belmonts or that the official Belmont lineage (especially those parents and/or children of named Belmonts who _have_ appeared in games) hasn't been canonically declared, who the heck is Julia Belmont and why should we care about her? The show didn't do nearly a good enough job to make us care about her before ending her, and as a result I care exponentially more about _Sonia Belmont_ from that one canceled CV game than I do about Julia. 5. Olrox. A semi-optional boss in Symphony (highly skilled players are able to maneuver and obtain certain required items without the Echo of Bat relic he guards), he was advertised as the big bad of at least the Rondo half of the show since there's been no mention of dark priest Shaft in any of the promos. Because of them choosing to time-displace Bathory and Drolta, Olrox has been relegated to "elite mook" status instead. A better story would've been Olrox being a remnant European aristocrat vampire/vampire-monster hybrid (a nosferatu, perhaps ;) ) being the one who gives priest Shaft the idea to resurrect Dracula to kick off the events of Rondo. 6. The poorly written abbot. He's basically dark priest Shaft but they go so far out of their way to not call out his surname as Shaft or Shaupft or any such variant that they took a boat to America. Because he's basically Shaft, they already screwed him up - Shaft was explicitly about resurrecting Dracula while this abbot thinks he's doing holy work. Adding in him being Maria's father is also goofy nonsense that didn't need to be there if he was going to be Shaft. 7. The ruined setup for Symphony. Most of why (in-game) Symphony happened was _because_ after Rondo Richter "went missing" for five years and Alucard felt dark magic was in play. Not only was Alucard introduced five years too early in the show, thereby meeting a _lucid_ Richter and _young_ Maria, but because of all the extra nonsense the show added and changed the Symphony first-half storyline of Richter being controlled by dark powers can't be used properly and effectively anymore when it's time to switch the show's focus to Symphony proper for various reasons. In my opinion, the biggest mistakes the Nocturne series made in season 1 were screwing around with the Castlevania timeline to bring Bathory and Drolta a hundred plus years earlier into the Rondo era and all the changes they did to accommodate that, giving Annette powers and agency and all the changes they did to accommodate that, and ruining not just the Rondo storyline but potentially the Symphony storyline as well by changing key people and motivations to accommodate the excessive nonsense such as that previously mentioned. It's clear the writers have no respect for the source material.

Great breakdown as I have similar thoughts on how they screwed this up too. While I get giving Annette more story was a good idea for a change, completely inventing a new character that needs a crap ton of story time to set up was NOT. I like the character they made(I'd been down with a Castlevania game set in the Carribean where you play as character who uses same powers and backstory), she just isn't Annette at all as I feel she doesn't fit into the story of this game. She doesn't serve the purpose of the chaarcter to the story. She's another action girl who eats up a bunch of screen time to justify why she is there. Black writers wanted to make a black character who they could put their point of view on things, which is fine but make your own story instead of clogging up an existing one. There's other issues with this as you aren't just race swapping Annette..you would be race swapping the entire Belmont family going forward. This is presents a problem, especially when you consider the lore of the games. The whip the Belmonts wield, it requires you to have a strong connection to the Belmont bloodline to use it. It will kill you if you aren't a true heir to it, as this happens to the character Jon Morris. The Belmont bloodline has been a major part of the story, as Maria gets her divine power from it as she is a distant cousin to Richter. The Belmont family always been of Europeon descent, so this doesn't gel with the lore to race swap Annette and make her the mother of Richter's kids. This compounds further as Richter is the last Belmont for a very long time that does anything noteworthy as nonBelmont vampire hunters picked up the slack for a awhile.(The reason for the developers to sideline them was so they could experiment with new gameplay styles instead of being stock to same whip/item system the Belmonts use.) So now if you make Annette the mother of these kids, then you have the in universe answer of biracial kids were not good enough to do the job. The failure happens on their watch. It's a terrible look from that standpoint. Finally Annette and her power set are a unique thing they went through all the trouble setting up. If they have her marry Richter, her legacy just gets folded into the Belmonts going forward. I;d rather she just stay her own thing instead of being absorbed by the Belmonts. If they continue the series to the battle of 1999 with Julius Belmont, one of her heirs could be there fighting along the rest of the cast and that would be cool. So if were up to me they would take the final girl, Iris that they didn't introduce, and let her be the mother of Richters kids since Annette has nothing in the common with the original character anyways. She doesn't serve the same purpose in the story even.(Iris, Maria, Tera and Annette) Have Iris be the one Richter ends up with, and let Annette who's a new thing live on as her own entity. This probably won't happen because who cares if you bulldoze a white character and their mythos while everyone else is a sacred cow in the race swapping game. This getting tiresome as if you're going make a brand new thing...make a brand new thing.(If this wasn't CV I would completely fine with this as a random vampire hunter cartoon.) if you're going make a story after a game, then stick to it.

One of the things that ring a warning bell to me is the french revolution. It's being portrayed as a overall good force, like how most schools teach it, and the nature of it being needed to wipe out the old ways of the church nobility and vampires. So if you know a bit about history, and you see the streets running with blood as the revolutionaries spiral and eat each other alive, kill their king and turn on the French countryside itself for not being too revolutionary. The Guillotining of priests, men, women, ministers or workers. Then the collapse of the bread market, society, the pillage and looting of churches and what seemed to be the level best attempt to destroy French society in the name of reason. When the abbot starts dressing down maria about the revolution he was right, so he had to be a demon summoner and in league with the vampires to discredit his opinions. Maybe next season as the revolution progresses have Maria confronted with the Jacobins, their executions of their own their purges, have her try to rally the people, and be called a counter revolutionary, she can still be a republican, just have her tempered or opposed. What would have been interesting to see, would have been the church being a force of net good or allies. The revolutionaries are to focused on reason and scientific enlightenment, and the destruction of the establishment and constant violent deaths let the vampires run wild through the streets and countryside. A revolutionary with a musket ins't doing much against a vampire (look what happened to Jacques) But the church? The Hospitallers or Inquisition or other backed hunting organisation? They've been doing this for centuries, they know what to do they know how the game is played, they know what the Belmonts are and they help. Holy water, crosses and silver. They might not beat the big bosses but they do better than the revolutionaries.

He rescues Maria early on, who develop a sibling relationship of him needing to protect her at all costs, which annoys her and pushes her to master her own magic powers and the two eventually become an unstoppable team. Dracula could subvert his previous roles and be a mentor figure to Richter, being interested in the techniques he developed while also indirectly showing him old techniques lost to time while they fight. If they absolutely had to do the french revolution angle, have dracula manipulate key figures so he could perform his plan undetected and steal all the maidens in the chaos. They could even have a post credits scene of Richter going insane and Alucard suddenly waking up to set up a symphony of the night season.

For non vampire anime stuff that’s more just action with blood and demons Id say try demon slayer, chainsaw man, drifters is really good and done by the same guy as hellsing, devilman crybaby( dark as hell even more than berserk) . For live stuff I’d also recommend Constantine which is based off the hellblazer comics, hellboy movies ( live and animated great comics as well) , Van Hellsing the movie with Hugh Jackman, and the Sandman series on Netflix. Also this is kinda different but if you want something more humorous but still with a kinda dark I’d recommend “good omens”on Amazon prime it was based off a book by Neil Gaiman( the guy who wrote Sandman) and Terry Pritchett. It pretty much follows the book takes place in modern time where the anti christ is born and the apocalypse is nigh one demon agent and one angel who have found they prefer the human world they’ve lived in so long try to prevent the apocalypse. It’s funny, somewhat dark, and has a great story with strong actors including David Tennat and Michael Sheen it’s just something I’d recommend to anyone. That’s all I can think of off the top of my head hope I helped.

yeah Castlevania Nocturna was hard to watch because of the Black Slave girl, I forgot her name. It got better at episode 8, when Richter Belmont came back. Here are my reasons for not liking her. ARROGANCE AND LACK OF GRATITUTE, she claims Richter is a coward for running away from his mother's killer, as if SHE would do any better against the vamp slave owner if SHE lost her powers like he did. She is only excellent because of a power that isn't even hers and she also has never stop to be reflective and be thankful. COMPARING HER STRUGGLES, she was constantly invalidating peoples experiences with the "MY PAIN IS BETTER THAN YOURS" typa shit. Her lack oof emotional intelligance, lack of empathy and just general shit attitude. MARRY SUE, She doesnt fail or learn anything and the only loses she suffers are because someone else was wrong.

Here's the truth of why user reviews are useless: We live in an era of corporate socialism. What is corporate socialism? Well the way things work today, they get your money to fund themselves even if you don't consume or pay directly for their product. How? From every single other product you buy. Every product you buy in the store advertises, and part of the cost of that product is from advertising, and companies pay for advertising. That means even if you've never seen an ad, even if you've never seen these shows, every product you buy is actually funding these shows. They've set the whole system so that your money automatically gets funneled to them one way or another. So even just buying a loaf of bread can mean you're indirectly funding shows like this. I know that might sound a bit hyperbolic, but it's true in every sense, because mundane everyday products you buy every day ultimately end up funding these things. Every person in America unwittingly pays for it in the checkout line at the grocery store and everywhere else. People can no longer actually vote with their dollar, because corporate media gets the dollar no matter what.

I wanted the show to be good man. I didn't play rondo of blood, but just looking over the wiki Annette's role in the story was much different. They completely changed her, just like they used a non-cannon ending for Juste Belmont. Juste succeeds in saving his friends and defeating Dracula, and Annette is a damsel in destress. If they wanted to change the damsel thing, that's fine they did that with the first series to Sypha. Though Sypha had chemistry with Trevor and Alucard, she was very likable while also being a badass. This version of Annette has literal god powers and is catered to by everyone in the show. They all love her even though she's very rude to all other the others. She's been turned into a Mary Stu. What makes the Belmonts and Belnades so cool is that they are regular people punching up. They fight Vampires and Demons using their intelligence, magic heirlooms passed down for generations, and spells you have to learn. I think the reason the first series worked because it knew what we wanted a story about these misfits taking on Dracula an evil Vampire Lord. Don't tell me that the show would be stale of it just did the same story again because the games have been telling the same story again and again for 37 years and every game is well received. Besides all you have to do is make it entertaining with well written character drama.

I've never cared all that much for review sites for the most part, because I usually like to watch/read/etc. something *for myself* to make up *my own opinion* first. Unless I'm concerned about whether or not I could be wasting time/money on a movie, etc., then I *do* like to check out the general consensus among other users to gauge the risk/reward of buying into something. It can be 50/50 if I'll let a movie's reviews prevent me from watching it anyway, for example, but I like having the option to hear what people thought of it *even if I may not agree*. Because surprise surprise: *they may have very valid points/reasoning for disliking whatever it is they disliked*, and that can help me make an informed decision on the property they reviewed. I *can* appreciate that aspect of user reviews, since I'm, you know, a (mostly) well-adjusted human being that has partaken of that ever-more elusive fruit known as Common Sense.

It’s a dangerous slope, and I’m very much with you, just because someone reviews something differently from oneself doesn’t mean that it’s a review bomb. Plus, I always find it ironic that when it’s negative, it’s a review bomb and never the other way around, or when it doesn’t have the representation that people want, it’s review bombing when the reviews are positive because it has what people miss having in their movies or shows. All I want is a stimulating story and interesting characters, which don’t have to strictly be dynamic. I don’t think that I’m asking for too much.

As an older person that is hard of hearing I cannot even understand what soprano boy is even signing without subtitles. Also there was a lot of nonsensical crap, like a trap door in the middle of a street... so nothing heavy ever goes over that, it looked wide enough for a cart. Random people who have no intention of running into each other constantly meeting at the same time as a plot driver. There were other similar plot devices that suck included. By the time I got to 7:18 mark of the video I felt the need to tell Ms. Larson to "Shut the F*** Up!". I was imagining my main three ethnicities wanting to spit apart into three separate people just so we yell even louder at her. Sometimes I will do something that makes me think I have set the bar for stupid way too high, making it too difficult for others to have a crack at it. This "issue" tends to be overcomplicated. You said it best when you suggested that the writer was being disingenuous. Character is not defined by how someone identifies, or by how they are represented in media. Race, gender, sexuality, etc. These are not "character" traits. If someone is defined by one of their inherent properties, that tends to make that person less compelling to anyone who doesn't "identify" with those properties. Good character, in media or in real life is determined by actions, not arbitrary personal attributes. To suggest otherwise displays a lack of critical thinking and objective thought. Being of mixed race does not make me, as a person, more compelling. However, if I always attempt to treat the people I encounter with dignity and respect, then THAT is a representation of my character. Imagine a world where people focused on what people do, and how they treat others, as opposed to their outward appearance or their personal preferences...

The climate of movies and series are a lot in line with video games, if you replace monetization with politics. I agree and fully support diversity and representation, but most of the bigger studios only really hire writers, directors and actors (more so the fist two) that care more for diversity and representation than making something good. They seem to believe that people will support them just because they are making morally right choices, however, hiring solely based on these choices instead of talent lead to poor writing, a lack of strong direction and faltering acting that then leads those moral choices to become associated with bad quality. Combine that with those that strongly believe in those moral choices just calling people that do not like a poorly written, poorly directed, movie bigoted for not liking something not designed to be enjoyed but to preach at them. No one likes to be preached at unless they are in the congregation.

@@Lastjustice”it’s race swapping every single Belmont that follows” not technically do you know how genetics work? If ritcher and Annette do end up together and having children their child will be mulato like Edward and if I’m correct the next big Belmont after ritcher is Julius Belmont which is just an ancestor of ritcher not even a son or grandson or great grandson. By the time it reaches Julius their race would have “cleaned” (as people like you would like to call it)and turned white if that’s all that matters. Also about the story of castlevania it is set in a fantastical world where vampire exist but that follows accurate world history. Ritcher was alive during the French Revolution according to his chronology. Thus this explains the setting for nocturne. Now you are wondering what do slaves have to do with French Revolution??? Well I’ll leave that to you to learn history. Last point “Annette from the games and Annette from nocturne aren’t the same at all” how would you know? The only thing depicted about her was just that she was Ritchers gf and that she looked white if you could even tell by zooming into pixels. @@MG-do5vb As far as genetics, I am part Cherokee regardless of how many generations it was back as I'm like 5%. Just because it will be probably less than even a 1% doesn't mean it's gone or not part of their family history if I ever have kids. It's part of the tree, so no this was never part of the Belmonts and their race and heritage has always been wholly white. Their bloodline always been a major plot point, but these writers knew jack about anything. (Hence their wacky take on nightcreatures that violates all existing lore of them in several ways.) Annette's role was completely changed from what she was, and her and Edouard went to great lengths to explain their role in the story. Drolta was black, and no one needs be told Black people can be vampires too, hence you don't see me dragging Drolta. (I feel she should have been the main villain of season 1, and then introduce the vampire messiah afterwards, but that has nothing to do with her race.) Drolta and elizabeth battory present other issues as they stole villains from later stories in the time(Bloodlines), but that's another discussion. Annette and Edouard had too much time devoted to them when neither was an existing character in the story as they were. Every white character was treated like an afterthought in their own story. They even managed to drag Juste as another Luke Skywalker/Last jedi washed up loser who gave up. Richter just gets his powered out of nowhere because the plot can't focus on him long enough have a real geniune breakthru with his Grandfather.(Who he randomly found because reasons.) The revolutions barely get any attention and just a segway to stuff a oh racism and slavery is bad angle into a story that never had any of these elements. You never know the French reolvution was happening because the town they were hanging out in was both clean with plenty of food. This definitely wasn't the case in the actual event. (Hence the whole let them eat cake thnig pissed off a bunch of people.)There were never any opera singers in Castlevania so every bit of these characters needed way too much time to deal with why was present. Screentime they badly need to work on what was already there. If they really wanted a blank slate, they could picked a different era of Castlevania, like Simon as he has no existing supporting cast. It was just him charging into the castle alone, so there was plenty of room to take more creative liberties since Dracula position in the story was changed. I'd fully expect them to add additional characters for that reason so there's someone else to talk to. If they say had vampire hunters assembling from around the world to hunt vampires assembling from around the world to complete some sort of ritual in Draculas castle, then it wouldn't be that big of a stretch into if we had someone from Africa and japan(as we saw Asian vampire hunters in season 3 of Castelvania that trained with Alucard.) or wherever else you felt like joining in on Simon's hunt and his follow up story. Especially if they had backstory to deal with the respective villains. This all organic to the story and doesn't require taking a time out to move things along. Given there was only one existing character to handle, they could probably have balanced the new ones with the one that had to cover easily. Instead, they picked a game with several existing characters, and half assed the majority of them while focusing on their pet characters. The overall story greatly suffers for it, especially the pacing as everyone just randomly bumps into the plot as there's no sense of direction or urgency despite the supposed end of the world happening. Maria and terra just go to bed in their house like it's another day, despite being this huge threat on the horizon. Everything was so sloppy and lackadaisical. I just think if Annette was actually kidnapped, you'd lite a fire under Richter, and given this story a clear direction from the jump. Even if she escapes or is soon let go by Orlox since he's playing both sides as a way to lead around Richter. There was dozens of ways of flesh out Annette beyond swapping her race. If changing a character race is only way you know how spice them up, then you're a trash writer. They were lazy and their final product shows it. They failed to balance all the existing characters with their new pet ones. (And created stupid replacements, instead of using the dark priest shaft, they made the mentally challenged Abbot, who's entire plan is dumb beyond words.) The story already had an action girl with Maria, and Richter is the hero, so what is new Annette doing for this story besides clunking it up with completely unneeded B plot? I think there's room for character like Nocture Annette in the mythos of Castlevania, just not in middle this story. If they made a game of a character like her hacking their way across the Carribean, it would been fine or made a brand new IP of this character. Instead they frankensteined it into a full story that didn't work. Castlevania wasn't full of girls being captured scenarios like Mario Bros. This was to show the vampires were trying make it personal for the Belmonts as they attacked the hero's girl. This story was an outliner, and women actually like being saved when bad things happened to them, so let's stop that's not the case when Feminists are writing. They could have still flesh out Annette a bunch of ways, as she could been dropping clues for Richter as she was smart enough to lead him to next safe house, or gutsy enough to escape. (You can have Maria with her as both were captured in the game.) This fallacy we can't improve a character or make interesting unless she is a girl boss character is nonsense. This makes the odd attack on women the only time they aren't weak if they're being like a man. Women can be strong in many ways.
