Crispr-Cas9 explained: the biggest revolution in gene editing
Ғылым және технология
Professor Jennifer Doudna, one the pioneers of Crispr-Cas9 gene editing explains how this important discovery enables precise changes to our DNA , which can be used to correct mutations that cause genetic disease and completely eradicate it from a germline. Doudna raises the 4 key issues of debate around this revolutionary discovery and suggests what will have the most immediate impact.

One problem with all such breakthroughs is the industrial military complex. As soon as a benign technical/biological advancement comes out, they always find a way to weaponize it. Science fiction eventually becomes science fact. I agree that one way to combat this eventuality is make it transparent to everyone. There the issue becomes is it true transparency or is it opaque transparency? For now, I will adopt an attitude of wait and see. "The answers are out there."

It's quite often the military that's paying for the research in the first place... which isn't necessarily a bad thing... although there are some quite serious flaws in that approach, granted.

Bang on. We just discussed the very subject last night. But my idea is to score some goals on viruses first
No matter how accurate or precise genetic modification/engineering becomes (and CRISPR is over-rated in that respect*), these scientists tend to ignore one basic reality about gene editing: genes exist in an ecosystem; a network that is dynamic, fluid, always in flux. Any modification, no matter the technique, no matter how "precise", will impact that network in some unexpected, unanticipated way that will likely result in unwanted mutations. That's the science. That is the science that is ignored all the time. While Doudna gets credit for raising ethical concerns (after the fact), she seems to have never been outspoken about the intrinsic flaws about gene editing in general. Where there is money to be made .... . *see, for example, "God’s Red Pencil? CRISPR and the Three Myths of Precise Genome Editing," by Jonathan Latham, PhD, Independent Science News, April 25, 2016

If we were living in a perfect world you would be totally right but we are not! already there is so many people suffering from hunger around the world and things are not getting better but they will get worse as climate is changing and there is not enough time for plants and animals to adopt to new climate. In this changing/ endanger world, CRISPR is our friend, helping us to protect the organisms around us and to protect and feed ourselves.

I'd like to add to what the person above me said by saying that it's still worth a shot. Trial and error is surprisingly effective sometimes, and with our current world we don't have many other options in the long term.
@atti1120

Well the same applies to natural mutations and induced mutations by breeding. What one has to realize is that the crops we have now are so far removed from what they were naturally, so we already crossed this line a long time ago. But you are right, keep artificially selecting for growth, then taste or disease resistance will not be selected for, and those qualities are washed out
The possible nefarious implications of this technology is rather scary .....a brave new world!

Covid19 brought me here.
The cost and access ... a discussion we should be having? Couldn’t that be a cut and dry answer? Those pioneers who developed certain medical advancements and stated they should not be administered for profit, guess what happened and who doesn’t have access. Greed is paramount in healthcare and not answering that question is very telling.
Is this available now? I have read this can help with Chronic lymphocytic leukemia
If CRISPR-Cas9 can cut the 'intruder' DNA code, allowing it to be replaced with the "correct" sequence - does every variation of cancer have the same genetic address? Like a MAC address? Shouldn't genetic editing be used for life threatening illnesses more than it is already?
I think someone used Crispr gene editing on the camera editing.
In a world like that where morality is subjective what do you think the outcome will be?
Scientists often say this will probably happen within the next decade and then 30 years later we are still waiting. In the 1960's and 70's I would watch programs on how great eveything would be in the year 2000 + and here we are in 2020 and all that's changed is TV. sets have gotten bigger and we have the internet.

re: "Number 4 : Engagement - it's incredibly important that citizens everywhere have a voice in deciding how to use powerful technologies like Crispr" Seriously? The same citizens that voted for trump, Brexit, Bolsanaro, Erdogan, that maniac from the Philippines, and whoever's running India right now? That epic % of the population who are rabidly denying climate-science? Citizens are too easily manipulated for direct-democracy - especially over something like this. We need democratically appointed representatives... but representatives who are strictly banned from taking ANY corporate money. The idea that citizens should have a say kindof highlights the fact that our democracies are chronically dysfunctional right now - mainly due to wealth-inequality, aka capitalism.

I honestly believe that I am being used as a test subject for this bio-hacking technology. It's causing remote neural paralysis and transhuman symptoms. Where can we go to report highly strange events to our health w/o being disregarded by physicians who were trained prior to these factors? We have a huge reputation in the world for studying torture and its effects and the applications of this technology require these methods. For pain is what opens up the neurons for the damage and thus "repair" and altering of our nervous systems towards being hooked up to the internet of all things
If you people in the comments think these people want to prevent disease you are extremely naive.

Not neccessarily, she did not deny that it's possible to design a human. If you watched other videos of her and doctor Church, you'll figure out that it's more than possible. What she was referring to are these two thing: - In the end she said in the "short run". - Also, designing a human doesn't neccessarily mean we have the ability to design everything, rather that doesn't matter, if we can do that for attractiveness and IQ that's what should matter. But you can;t fully design a human.

Genetically engineered medical treatment is good, but changing the unborn baby should be illegal. The movie Hanna come to mind, a genetically engineered girl made to be a better soldier, less empathy stronger smarter, it’s inhuman to impose such curses to someone who never wanted or asked for any of it.
@danielthunder9876

They are only talking about editing unborn children for genetic defects. Like cystic fibrosis ect. These are also easily identified as they know the exact gene that causes it. Modifying for complex things like stronger smarter ect is far more difficult as we don't even currently know what genes effect this. Maybe a problem in 50 years, but not now or the next couple of decades.

Arguments from "It's too complicated to ..." have a terrible track record. There are many, many things that are common today that are "too complicated" for people to do, like Amazon recommendations or indexing the internet. If Professor Doudna wanted to be the least bit credible, she should argue that "Designing a person violates physical law in this way: ..." or "Not only conventional computers-but quantum computers as well-can be mathematically proven to be unable to design a human." Anything else is just wishful thinking. Her certainty is particularly regrettable since she could only plausibly make that claim if she *knew how humans work* -- everything else is a guess, and a likely bad one at that.
Stop talking and show me the procedure in real life with no animations.
