The Center for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies invited Emmy award-winning guest speaker, Simon Ostrovsky, to comment on his experiences in journalism and crisis reporting in Ukraine, Nagorno Karabakh, and Belarus to help others gain a better understanding of these events and relive some of Simon's high-stake experiences.
Simon Ostrovsky is an Emmy award-winning PBS NewsHour Special Correspondent who has covered conflict and upheaval throughout countries of the former Soviet Union and beyond for the last two decades. During his coverage of the war in Ukraine for VICE Media, he established the presence of Russian troops by verifying their social media posts in the field. The investigation was awarded the prestigious Alfred I. du Pont-Columbia University Award for its innovative reporting. More recently, he has worked closely with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting to bring undercover stories like the popular uprising in Belarus and the war in Nagorno Karabakh to NewsHour’s national audience.
This talk was the 2020-21 CSEEES Graduate Student Choice Lecture. Each year, the CSEEES MA students are invited to select a speaker and/or topic of their choice to add to CSEEES' lecture series.
