Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion Critique: A Remastered Legacy

STORY SPOILERS
Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion bring to life a classic Square Enix Final Fantasy with upgraded graphics and heavily improved gameplay on current consoles.
But is it enough to encourage new players into experiencing this story before Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth releases Winter 2023?
0:00 Intro
4:10 Story + Characters (Embrace Your Dreams)

There is a very common opinion that the first Final Fantasy you ever played will most likely be one of your all time favourites forever.
Sure it’s not always the case 100% of the time but It is a big reason why games such as FF6 through 10 remain so beloved by a huge chunk of the fanbase to this day, not only are those games filled with nostalgia bringing back nothing but the good memories, but it was also the very first time they got to immerse themselves within a Final Fantasy world, characters and story.
And on December 13th 2022 this idea of replaying, re-experiencing and taking a trip down memory lane became a possibility for many like myself as Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion (or just crisis core for short) got released worldwide on all modern consoles, with highly upgraded graphics,re-done voice acting and improved combat…But this time with bills and adult responsibilities which is the reason this video took forever to come out, I apologise.
Despite what some may believe as it was released 10 years after the original, Crisis Core plays a crucial role in the story of Final Fantasy 7 but especially the character of Cloud.
And with the Final Fantasy 7 craze possibly being at an all time high as square is pushing the story in a new direction with the recent remake and Rebirth coming out this Winter (which I can put money on and say will come out early 2024, probably march).
The knowledge of Crisis Core will be far more crucial than it ever has been, which brings us to today.
This video will contain spoilers for the game so if you’ve yet to play it and want to go into it completely blind I highly suggest coming back to this video afterwards, but do drop a like before going because me and you both know you’re not likely to actually come back are you.
As we go on I am interested in hearing what everyone’s opinion on the game is, weather this remaster was your first time playing or if you played the original so make sure to let me know,
But with all that said let’s take a look at Crisis Core Reunion, A living legacy fully remastered.

Thank you everyone for checking out the video! I wanted to get this out sooner but unfortunately ended up being too busy as well as ill during the recording process, regardless hope you enjoy and are looking forward to some future content🙏
Ben 10 and crisis core were definitely my most played games on the psp ahaha. Zack’s og voice actor was so iconic honestly makes the game imo. it was kinda crazy seeing a game like that on a handheld back then. The cutscene in the training room might be one of my favorite scenes in all of gaming.

Im totally with you on that. Zacks voice was so perfect as well as the rest of the cast. And you know i had a few save Points right before that cutscene in Case i wanted to watch that over and over again haha good times

Appreciate you! More coming all year
As someone who played Crisis Core for the first time with Reunion, I had a really good time with it and the ending had me crying hard. I liked the characters and the combat was fun to play around with, though I never grew a taste for the mini-games. I fully agree with the game needing more cutscenes as a lot of the characters, especially Genesis and Angeal often developed completely off-screen which often made their statements and actions confusing and feel weakly-written. For example, Genesis' plan was confusing as hell. First, he tries to take down Shinra and cure his degradation through Hollander. Then he decides to just hang around in Nibelheim and drive Sephiroth insane only to expect help from him right after. Then he tries to take Cloud for his DNA only to immediately forget about him and go to Minerva for help for...reasons? Not to mention Angeal suddenly deciding to just kill himself after previously seeming to fight against Genesis. A few cutscenes showing their development towards these positions would have done a lot to help the situation.

It's a shame because a major chunk could've made so much more sense with 10-20min of extra cutscene content, so whilst we shouldn't have expected it, it would have been a game changer for the story telling

@@reliableprez Yes, exactly! I talked to friends on Discord about it and they came up with a lot of good explanations and interpretations of the background of many character actions which left me even more disappointed that all of these interesting nuances simply weren't in the actual game. I really wanted to love Genesis because his character always seemed so fun and interesting to me from the outside, but his actual in-game presentation left a lot to be desired and I really wish I didn't have to say that. A lot of characters suffer the same thing, especially Cloud. The ending did hit hard, but I can only imagine how much heavier it would have been had we spent more time with him and actually gotten to know him as a person and bright-eyed trooper instead of as a footnote before the finale.

Fair criticisms all, but even for all of that, this game to me is as much a part of FF7 as any of the original 3 disks. FF7 has been my favorite FF, and possibly my favorite game period with the Legacy of Kain series). I didn't expect much from a game on the PSP back then, and played it at a time with nothing better to do. I was shocked to find a game that broke my heart every bit as effectively as the OG FF7 - perhaps more so, since you still had to finish FF7 after 'that' scene, which ended up (for me) being cathartic. When this one broke my heart, the game is almost over with little time to process the emotions I experienced; I walked away from this game a bit depressed for a day or so 🤣 I'm very much looking forward to playing Reunion.
You ok darling? Ain't seen you in half a year
This is a perfect commentary on this game in my opinion. Well done
Thanks for this!! Got excited when I saw you posted it!

First playthrough for me as well so it'll be an interesting one
I played the original on PSP and didn’t get to spend as long with it as I wanted to. Didn’t complete everything I wanted to do, but did beat the game and cried a lot. Haha. 😅 Zack became my favourite FF character of all time so I always had fond memories of it. I’m on my third play through of the game because I’m just mad I guess. I Platinumed it on PS5 and the missions were really addictive. I’m pleased with it. Great video!!!

One of the most iconic endings in gaming
Played the CC remaster straight after FF7R, never having played either of the originals, it is my favourite game - the story having a very big role in me reaching that conclusion. I definitely compared Zack to Cloud as main characters at the start and Zack was a breath of fresh air compared to Cloud in FF7R. Enjoyed the combat, don't really have a comment there. The mini games were fun, except that one shooting mini game towards the end - was not my cup of tea. The story had me engaged at all points with no low points for me at all - no characters I thought were bad or that I didn't enjoy, pacing was fine for me. The ending sequence + cutscenes had me crying like I hadn't cried in a long time and every time you think it's over it sucker-punches you another time. I was emotionally drained for a few days after that. Hearing Price of Freedom still puts a lump in my throat. I think this is because I really enjoyed Zack as a main character, seeing him growing up from a goofy teenager to a guy who knows the weight of responsibility and honour, definitely had me connecting more to him than I did to Cloud in FF7R. I didn't mind the voice acting, yes it wasn't Oscar-worthy, but it didn't take away from my experience of the game. Even without nostalgia tinted glasses, this game is definitely one to remember. Looking forward to my replay on hard difficulty, but I still need some time to recover emotionally before that. Also looking forward to seeing Zack in FF7 Rebirth.
I bought it already for PS5 coming tomorrow!
This game is the most replayable Final Fantasy game. I’ve played FFX numerous times, but boy I wish we could skip cutscenes! “Crisis Core” is the most replayable Final Fantasy game to date! The gameplay is too much fun,and the gameplay really opens up,with the most powerful abilities like using Quake and costly punch for 99,999 damage! Overall I would say I’ve never been so addicted to a game on a console for a long time! I never played this on the PSP before, but I did try to get it back that but it was sold out for like months! Overall I’m glad I got the opportunity to experience it now, even though it was a long wait! The PSP did have its limitations and so I understand the mission system, because a similar setup was made with “Daxter” and “GOW Chains of Olympus”.

i never played crisis core back in the day, because i didn't own a PSP. i was vaguely aware of the plot, and of course i knew how it ended thanks to OG FF7. so i picked up Crisis Core Reunion because i wanted to see what the fuss was all about. Everyone loves Zack, and i wanted to know why. I thought maybe he was overrated? I had SO MUCH FUN with CCR. the combat and gameplay were loads of fun and i absolutely honestly fell in love with Zack. He's such a himbo, you can't help loving him. And yes the game has issues; mostly the shitty dialogue writing and the overly exaggarated body language, but i took that all in stride because i was having so much fun, and i finally had that context i wanted. Oh and yes, i cried all of my tears during the end scenes. Sobbed like a child. Wow they really went for the kill, didn't they? :'D

No way to get through the ending without any tears
the first time i played this i got my friends psp and this game with it, but the pp stopped working before i could beat it. a few months ago i did a play through using the ppsspp emulator. i'll eventually get the reunion.
Nice and balanced review, thank you! I personally can't stand english dubs, and if you're not fully sold on the VA, I _really_ recommend you to test out the "original" japanese VA. I think they do a _great_ job, especially in FFVIIR but also very much so in CCR. Also, I think the repurposed FMVs spoiled a lot of moments for me, I wish they'd updated them completely instead of just inserting the now-canon-style Buster Sword in the videos where it is present 🙃
👍

Seriously try playing the game on PS5 and the loading screen will not be that big of an issue for you. That is what you seem to complain about the most. Ffx was my first and FF15 is my favorite, because I can't skip cutscenes otherwise FFX would be my favorite. FF7 Remake is great but your always on a set mission with occasional side quests, the open world feel of 15 is sooo much better than ff7r, so i guess im rare because FFX cut scenes are very tiresome after playing it 3 times through and im at 9 playthroughs now

@ReliablePrez it's a PSP game on a PS5 what else do you expect, I agree with everything else but don't complain that it is a PSP game. It sounds silly, like saying that you don't like a DVD because it's on a disk or FFX because it has a story or trying to convince people that his name is teedus tedus teadus... its freakin Tidus, if they dont no how to spell thats their problem, yes I know right, this is one of the most tedious arguments of Final Fantasy. Ill never back down lol 😆 🙃

@ReliablePrez played it through three times before I ever heard someone called him T diss. I'll give Crisis Core Reunion a 8/10 Negatives Zack's Voice Acting Tifa censorship No option for original soundtrack(why does every re-release have to have a different OST?) Missable trophies/achievements Some bad minigames
