They covered pitches always. Certainly in this decade. But now, I just discovered they wear numbers in "Tests".... is this so you know if it is the Mets or the Dodgers Stokes is playing for? Joke! Now I think the money likes altered bats that hit the ball far etc.

All the great cricket team were there . All teams were strong, west indies, England, Australia, India and Pakistan .India was the only country played without fast bowlers and won matches . Bedi, Prasanna, Chandra and venkat wre great spinners. Gavaskar and Solkar made the opening attack with their gentle medium pace , After 4 or 5 overs bedi came into attack and these spinners can spin with shining on the ball. Gret . Even New zealand , much weekerside, those days , had good batsman and bowlers.Kapil Dev , Holding, Garner, Marshall must have come in early 70's and the cricket would have been much more entertaining. We were unlucky to see the great players from south Africa because of apartheid. The Pollocks, Barlow, Barry Richards , Clive Rice were great players and would have made records in cricket history. After Bradman ,Grahame Pollock holds highest batting average of 61 , if my memory is correct. Also the commentary was classic .

pradeep kumar India was the weakest team of the 70’s. Even worse were their ODI matches . Gavaskar scored 36 not out in 60 overs against England in75 WC . Then loosing to SL in 79 WC . In those years when WI , PAK and SA players were honing their skills in county crickets no batsmen from India were not in county championship . Finally no players from India was recruited in the Packer’s WSC. However with the entry of great N Kapil Dev in the late 70’s the whole philosophy of Indian cricket started changing . Now they are on top of cricket world .

What gets me is how fast Holding, Lillie, Roberts et al are bowling - just look at how far back the keeper and slips are. They're hardly ever back that far these days as the ball just wouldn't carry. Not only is the bowling demon fast, the guys facing it are wearing caps or sun hats and wearing 1970s equipment - pads that were one step up from a rolled up National Geographic, gloves that were as thin as hell, very few chest pads. Most went out in pads, thigh pad, box and gloves. Against Holding! And with a bat with a pretty small middle, at least compared to today's bats. Going even further back, imagine Bradman facing Larwood with 1930s equipment! This was the era I started watching cricket and I still love it - just wish today's camera angles were available then! Great vid but I find it odd that Packer's World Series Cricket doesn't get a look in - that's the harbinger of the modern game and it's a travesty the runs and wickets taken there are not considered "first class", even to this day. Lastly, what a joy to see Gavaskar and Gower in their pomp again.

Matt Brown Totally agree as you make some valid and relevant points. Clothing was often a mixture of whites and creams. The bowlers would have loved modern comfortable boots and batsmen more so the modern bats that launch the ball with ease into the stands! And with the limited over games won or lost by a few ones, fitness and fielding has change enormously! No more burly fast bowlers swinging their arms as they walk onto the field for their warm up!

@@kunalsingh3121 You went off on a tangent there. Many assumptions. Dennis Lillee got Viv Richards out more times than any other batsman. A mark of his greatness. You plucked Malcolm Marshall's stats from obscurity to say he was better. Did you know Marshall went to Lillee & asked him to teach him how to bowl outswingers & leg cutters? Thought not. Marshall's strike rate is better, but you have to remember he bowled in quartet. Shorter spells, always fresh. Lillee bowled long spells & was the man depended upon to make the breakthrough. Ever 2nd summer, Australia played the West Indies. Wonder how individually, the quartet might go removing, Greenidge, Haynes, Richardson, Richards, Lloyd, Logie, Dujon? Lillee bowled at the strongest lineup ever seen, regularly. No cheap wickets on offer. Took an astonishing 10 wkts haul on Boxing Day, 1982 to dismiss them & break the world record. At his peak, Lillee averaged a strike rate of 46 & nudging 6 wkts a Test. Viv Richards rates Lillee as the greatest. Tony Cosier has said DK was the best ever to play on Carribean shores. I met & talked to Joel Garner. He said Dennis was the best, top of the tree. When Dennis retired, he had more 5 & 10 wicket hauls in history & still the fastest quick to take reach 300 Test wickets, just 56 Tests & the 1st bowler to take 100 ODI wickets. Your assumption of a lack of success on the subcontinent is just ill knowledge. Australia avoided touring because of dysentery & a danger to player health & well-being. The tour of Pakistan was doctored featherbed wickets, to negate his masterly skills. Slow, unresponsive spin pitches. DK was the no. 1 bowler in Supertests, with 67 wickets in 14 Tests & took 12/92 against The World XI. He holds the fast bowling record of most wickets in a calendar year, 79 in just 15 Tests. He was selected as Wisden Cricketer of the Century No. 6, the 1st fast bowler. In Australian cricket history, Dennis Lillee is admired as was Don Bradman. He remains the great & finest fast bowler to grace the game. Champion, the best. As for your strange assumption of Viv Richards. He is favorite all time batsman. The best Test batsman of the last 50-60 years. A collossus. The best ODI batsman in history. A tier above Tendulkar, Lara, Kohli etc & statistics support it. Marshall is the 2nd best fast bowler I have ever seen. DK Lillee taught him how to bowl the wicket balls. Shows to Marshall, that Dennis was the yardstick & the king.

If the ball spins off the bat (see videos of Shane Warne or Murali) or if a batsman gloves a ball away from their throat then it's not going to go very far - the fielders have to stand close to have a chance of catching it. Peter's reply is witty - the positions are often called "silly [insert position]". Why? Because standing there is dangerous and silly!
