550 Performance Level 1.0 dyno chart: drive.google.com/file/d/1RaCv...
Welcome to a full episode of Honda CRF300L Level 1.0 tuning video. To my great surprise the tune actually made a very big difference in the upper RPM ranges and I can't stop smiling when I ride it. I was a bit intoxicated by the bike in this first ride but even after riding it for a longer trip the stock bike always felt like it was chocked up by the regulatory restrictions in the tune, exhaust etc. and now the tuned bike is not completely out of breath after 7k rpm. The bike stays alive in the upper register and if you keep it in the 6-9k mark the differences are very apparent.
As my channel is a lot about me real time reacting to different bikes I left the first ride almost uncut. It's not scientific but I hope you enjoy me reacting to my new toy like a little kid and don't take it too seriously 😎
I'm not saying everyone should do the mod like this but here is an option for you if you want to make it the way I did. I left the snorkel part LONG because I don't want there to be any confusion how I made it.
Post your thoughts below and let's keep it civil. I'm not an airflow engineer but this is my bike and this is how I wanted to make the mod. You can do what you like to your own bike 😄
The mail in ECU update from 550 Performance was very fast and the ECU was back to Finland in under 2 weeks even though I used a slow post office shipment sending it in.
The metal "trumpet" I used check my post: • Post
First fuel consumption test:
I rode my first fairly aggressive ride with the newly tuned bike. 140km ride with 80% off-road and 20% highway 100-120km/h and the consumption for this trip was 4,24 L/100km (55,48 mpg). Very pleasantly surprised that the difference is very small if any to the stock bike.
This ride and the video is made using 98-E5 Octane fuel.
About the exhaust:
I sent a query to Dominator if there is a "hard" DB killer available because the medium on the bike now is very loud for my taste. Unfortunately this (MX2) exhaust only has the "medium" killer that comes with the set. Be aware this setup is VERY loud. I might be swapping it to something like Yoshimura RS-4 or Arrow later if I can have a listen side by side and hear if they more pleasant.
The difference in internal diameter to the stock headers is +4mm so I recommend swapping the stock exhaust headers too because the stock pipe is pretty small and it's beneficial to have the exhaust diameter staying the same through the whole exhaust.
The "normal" way of doing this mod:
Jake glues the CB300 stack: tinyurl.com/3xt2p8r4
Jake installing the glued airbox: tinyurl.com/4es3ncu2
You can decide yourself which version you like to do.

    I have done everything you have minus the velocity stack. Plus I swapped the 40T rear sprocket to a 42T to get that low end punch your missing. With all the other mods, the bike doesn’t lose any top end speed by adding just 2 more teeth. But now I can get the front tire off the ground without having to grab a handful of clutch. My bike topped out at 81mph in stock form, and it still tops out at 81mph.

Like you I am not sure I could handle or like the attention I would get with the loud exhaust, maybe when I was 16 I would have thought it was cool. I'm pretty sure the stock exhaust is a major restriction and 550 performance states that the exhaust swap is the only necessary for this level 1.0 mod. The bike is according to them going to run better with this tune if you do all the same mods as me. I would recommend looking into Yoshimura RS-4 as it would most likely sound much less nasty. I just didn't want to pay the money now.. but I might do that later.

  • @PatchedBandit

    @PatchedBandit

    2 ай бұрын

    I don't see how it would negatively affect reliability. One could even argue that the engine tune is now correct and therefore is better for long term reliability. Stock engines with the "euro" and other restrictions tend to run pretty lean. This ECU tune is optimizing the engine to run with the correct mixture. I have a chapter in the description about the fuel consumption from my first longer ride.

Did you also put the high flow airbox lid or aftermarket filter or I may have missed it? Also, did you notice increase in top speed and maybe bike feeling more comfortable at higher speeds that previously on stock when the engine was struggling?

    That is the smart thing to do with the CRF. The weakest part of this bike is the suspension. Front and rear. I made the mistake of going with the YSS suspension which doesn’t work well with this bike at all. Especially the fork kit . Lesson learned. I am going to go with the Rally Raid next month. The design of the motor really doesn’t lend in self to any large gains in HP.

It was definitely the suspension that was holding me back. Overall the ride was comfortable just about everywhere but it was riding so deep in its travel I couldn't get the bike to react when needed. There was one situation where I was coming up on an uphill rut and I wanted to seat bounce off a rock to clear it but the bike couldn't do it. Good video! I have my doubts with the modified nozzle. The CBR one would always be flush with the air box but yours would produce more turbulence when inserted into it, right? It would be a mix between images 1 and 4 of the image provided by 550 (10:17)

  • @PatchedBandit

    @PatchedBandit

    Even the cb300 part is not flush with the box. Some turbulence inside the box is always to be expected but that would the same with the stock nossle. The long snout is even further from the throttle body and works fine. This mod is nicer than cb300 since it turns parallel wit the airbox as the airbox also turns down at the beginning.

    Honda did all of this under-sizing of intake air strictly to meet emission requirements, I know you're doing this one correctly since I've seen it done. I will say that you're cleaner than the other guy but both of you got the job done. If you were to do the 301cc kit I think you'd have to do this intake job but how would the ECU numbers work? I mean, after the big bore the fuel numbers would need to be changed along w/ the air..... but I'm guessing you would not use/need the 550 ECU flash in this case? IDKnow but it just hit me that there's several different things that might offer you an ECU change in numbers & you can't use all of them. I did really digg the suspension video, loved those guys ~ how professional they were ! peace

    Hello @PatchedBandit, dit you also consider replacing the stock airfilter with a TwinAir one (ART. 150609P). I also have the the 550 Stage 1, combined with all the airbox mods and with this foam filter. It provides even more airflow, so the 550 tune will use that extra air for the optimal fuel mix and it provides even more power, especially at midrang en topend, where the extra airflow matters. Just a tip.. :-)

  • @PatchedBandit

    @PatchedBandit

    2 ай бұрын

    I did consider it but better airflow filters have a downside of not filtering as well. The more airflow the bigger the particles that get through. Filtering effectiveness of paper filters is incredibly good but they do need to be changed pretty often in group ride environments.. I love using prefilters but this airbox lid is not allowing me to do that anymore. I'm probably going to try and figure out a way to mod that airbox lid so that I could install a prefilter to that too. If I can do that I might swap to a performance main filter. But using dual filtering is proabably not gonna lead up to better airflow. Right now I'm willing to suffer a couple % penalty for better filtering capability of the stock paper filter.

  • @PatchedBandit

    @PatchedBandit

    2 ай бұрын

    I wish twin air would add a box to that filter unit where one could easily swap a prefilter in and out without even pulling the filter out of the airbox. Would be an easy upgrade to that design.

    You should have used the cbr stack and saved yourself the struggle. Another ‘Tuber’ drew a template of the box/stack to make the proper adjustment. You have to ‘clock’ the stack so the expansion chamber flange rotates about 20* up (plug the flange, you don’t need that chamber with the mods) My crf is in the Philippines and exhaust noise isn’t an issue. The length of intake tube matters. My car has electrically adjusted telescopic intake tubes that extend longer in low RPM for better torque and retract shorter for high RPM power. Cutting it short is not without side effect. I'm still searching for lightweight aftermarket exhaust that is not louder than stock exhaust. Riding offroad is illegal essentially everywhere in my country so we need to keep as silent as possible to avoid trouble. I wonder if you are going to replace heavy Pb battery with LiFePo and to remove pointless ABS to reduce weight?

  • @PatchedBandit

    @PatchedBandit

    2 ай бұрын

    True that there is always side affects on modifying the airboxes but this ECU tune is optimized for the CB300 stack and HF lid so I tend to lean that this is a benefit considering high rpm power production. If I want a fully euro stamped exhaust at some point I'm probably going with Arrow. They even have a midpipe with approved CAT. This dominator is probably one of the louder ones available but also one of the cheaper ones too. I already swapped the battery here: kzread.infoHSNgOZXblik?feature=share I might do the collector box delete later but I'm probably gonna leave the ABS as it's not such a big benefit to remove.

    Well. I might swap the dominator to a quieter optiom later. It is definitely too loud for public roads 😂 but some people love the sound.. I’m gonna get sick of it after a while. Something midway from this and the stock would be great.

    I would be very surprised if that would affect the performance much if at all. I went from 16 seconds to 11 seconds doing 30-120kph with the tune already. I might test an aftermarker "high flow" filter later if I can find a good one for it but so far I don't feel that the bike is starving for air.

    They don't fit well under the plastics of the CRF. There is a good video sample of this on YT and they also let water through easier than the frogskin. I might try and modify a prefilter slot on top or under the frogskin later as I would like to use prefilters to extend the life of the main filter or use a high flow main filter with less effective filtering.

    ... The video was great, not too long. 300 Rally owner here in Maryland, USA. I love it. Bought it used with 1944 miles. It had Rally Raid suspension Level 1 front and back plus a LOT of other add ons already. Bark busters, skid plate, tail rack, etc. I have since added the 550 Stage 1 ECU. Opened up the top back of the air box like POMMEY BIKER did here. ... kzread.info/dash/bejne/ppdnr5ZrebvIccY.html Installed the DNA air filter and full Yoshimura RS4. I have the CBR stack but because that is much more involved, I wanted to see how it felt with just the changes already. Yes, it does have more pickup with my "seat of the pants" test rides. . Thought about the metal "trumpet". I'm considering cutting the stock intake like you did (maybe a little shorter) heating it with a heat gun and flaring the end out to be similar to the CBR stack and the metal trumpet. What are your thoughts about that? Also, I want to cut that ridge inside the air box down or completely remove it. Thanks again for the video!! . On a side note about youtube and my channel. Now that I am back into riding, it was my first addiction before fishing, I am asking myself, do I combine my addictions in one yt channel and change the name to, "Bay Boat and Bike Life" or start a totally different channel just for the bike info? I really do not want 2 channels. Jeff

  • @PatchedBandit

    @PatchedBandit

    2 ай бұрын

    To the first question I would say that heatgun was the first idea to me too but then I read up about it online a bit more and the consensus online is that rubber doesn't really want to be manipulated with heat. It might get very brittle and even shrink from the heat so it's not like modling plastic. I would steer you away from the heatgun idea from what I have read online. Cutting the ridge off can't do any harm. Not sure how much it is affecting the flow though. Considering youtube is a very tough place to give channel advice as combining 2 subjects might be a great way to identify your channel from all the rest of the million motorcycle channels out there. BUT on the other hand usually sticking to signle subject is considered more effective. It's pretty simple in a way that people watching your fishing videos are most likely not all that interested in your motorcycle content and the same in the opposite way. Like I would be watching your moto content but not necessarily all that interested in the fishing. Even though most like fishing it's not content I look on the weekly or even monthly online. As a general rule it's good to find a niche and stick to it and second rule usually is to keep the channel in that niche. It took me a long time to realise that people are not interested in ME.. But the bikes. And I have steered my content a lot in that direction lately. I started this like many others just to make fun videos about things I do. But I post less and less about my daytoday trips and focus on creating more informational content. I'm still gonna do some entertainment too but I know I'm not very good at it. You might be so that's why it's so tough to give this advice.. I don't want to steer you away from a winning combo. Trial and error my friend! 😄

    If in a year, your engine blows a piston. Who pays the bill? I've heard it happen 😔

  • @PatchedBandit

    @PatchedBandit

    Ай бұрын

    1. Let there be no confusion here. This WILL void the bikes warranty fully. 2. These tunes have not been made to the CRF300 so long that anybody would be hearing of the pistons been blown from these engines. 3. This is not a very intrusive tune in that none of the moving parts are modified. The engine will just breathe better as all the restrictive 'environmentally friendly' blocks are taken off the bike. This being said EVERYONE is doing the work to their own bike on their own responsibility! Only time will tell how the longevity is affected. I am willing to take the risk but I fully understand that this is not for everyone and if reliability is the absolute no.1 thing for any of you I definitely don't recommend doing anything to the stock bike. I am willing to be the test dummy and report back how life is with the tuned Honda. If I blow the engine on mine I will make a video for sure.
