Dedicated to my father who loved ancient books & manuscripts of all cultures and the stories they give us. He worked for a while at the British Library caretaking and looking after the fabric of a couple of their buildings, and it give him great pride to play a small part in the preservation of ancient manuscripts. Something which he remembered doing even when he was getting quite advanced with Alzheimers.
I wrote this piece when he was in the advanced stage of Alzheimers and had lost his language and ability to talk. We communicated through music and he loved to hear me play my harp. The structure of this piece is deliberately fragmented with the tune (time) flowing in different orders, much as it does with anyone who suffers from the disease. It is looking back in time over your life, but the stories remembered might not be in the order that they happened.
We were very lucky that despite the condition my father was not angry/aggressive towards us at the end of his life which sadly is very common. So the piece ends with optimisism and celebrates a life well lived despite ending his years with this cruel and terrible disease.
