I imagine like "The atmosphere of the cabin and the surroundings was amazing! The free reign was a nice bonus as well despite the off limits room. I would give it four stars, however the addition of haunted k*ller portraits and dirty bathroom bump it down to 2 1/5 stars. It really ruined the experience for me."
I like how for monsters there's all these gross, twisted, malformed creatures straight out of hell or a demented child's nightmares and then there's just a skinny farmer with a badass mustache and hat.
I tried going to an AirBnB where the person had family photos covering the walls in every room, including the bathroom. The living room had so much furniture there was hardly any walking space. I went to go take a piss and had peepaw staring me dead in the eye. I guess this game isn't too far off.

I don't get having so much stuff when people are renting out their homes. Aren't they concerned people might steal stuff? I wouldn't rent out or in, but if I did I would keep it bare minimum. I'm not talking specifically about the family photos in your story that people may not want, but valuable things and in general. Side note, John Mulaney asked a man why he stole family photos. He said because it's the one thing that you can't replace. Messed up.

I stayed at a Berlin AirBnB place twelve years ago. The owner rented us his private flat for one night as the one we chose was overbooked. @@CriminalizeObesity We wanted some of them to look more like normal-ish people since I think the idea in the original story was implied that they were just regular portraits of creepy mean-looking people as opposed to monsters but I wanted a variety. The reason for the scythe pilgrim and American Gothic was to seem like mostly human, and the reason American Gothic is the first you see is to make it seem like this could just be something someone put up in their house so that it doesn't necessarily give away that it is a window immediately
I remember reading this creepypasta the first time like 10+ years ago, when it was simply about someone seeking shelter in a cabin in the woods. Honestly if it were me, there would definitely be some red flags in those reviews that would make me sleep in the truck. You should have emergency items in your vehicle at all times for stuff like this anyways, and if you don't, this is your sign to do it. Water, blankets, flashlights, roadside emergency items (like jumper cables, those reflective triangles or flares, glass breaker, seat belt cutter, etc), and also make sure you have a spare tire and everything to change it, or if you have a newer vehicle, your fix a flat.

@@Ayyaii24 This is kinda offtopic but kinda related, but it never made sense to me that some MCs in horror games go to explore a abandoned place at night and not bring a flashlight. I get that stories can have some goofy writing like that, maybe to increase the MC's vulnerability and fear factor, but it's too farfetched for me. Also, the MC going at night instead of day time. If the devs wanted it to be dark then they could have all the windows shut and the MC unable to open them. I don't like too dark games anyways where it's too dark for me to see and enjoy the game.

@@lovelost28 You know, it's hard to say now, where did the original creepypasta appear, but I'm pretty sure, I saw Russian version of it years before the English version appeared. And in Russian version, the hunter was somewhere in taiga in the middle of nowhere, when he found this house, so the event was, indeed, mystical. Maybe it even was a reference to some real legends of locals, I don't remember. The empty house in the middle of frozen hell wasn't anything special though, they have such buildings in deep forest, so hunters or wanderers can find a shelter from the cold

Really enjoyed this to the point that I’m gonna to play it myself. There’s a lot of really subtle things done really well to sell it. The portraits are creepy but not over the top (and references to famous paintings without being parody too!) The sound design - really what sold me on it. I love being able to go ‘oh yeah there’s the board that makes that sound’. It’s a simple story but told really well.
I love how you take psychic damage in this game
This is a small horror game done right. That was scarier than any jumpscares.
Oh man... I believed I couldn't get so uncomfortable anymore with horror games, but this one flipped some hidden fear in me... It was very unsettling for ten minutes of actual gameplay! No way, my arms are actually in pain from tensing up so much... The actual art is really incredible; it's not just one, but all of the portraits lined up together is truly overpowering, like some sick joke from the owners. Its so simple, but portraits becoming windows is really scary if they are horrific. I get it, you spend a 130 for the Airbnb, my dude got a sack of steel because if you see a bedroom like that, you don't trust it! Sleep in the car!
This was a good adaptation of the creepypasta, I'd say a more effective version of the story. The unambiguous fate, both of previous tenants and of our protagonist, add a lot.
I have to ask . . . why would you stay at a $130.00/night 1.2 star AirBnB with no power when you can just pull off the side of the road or find a 24 hour Walmart and sleep in the car?
I don't know what it is about your videos, but everytime I'm bored or just don't know what to watch, your content is like my comfort go to, in the sense that I know I'll always find it enjoyable

Pretty sure I remember this creepypasta. Something about a hunter/traveler staying the night in a cottage in the woods? Maybe cause you like that game, or to see how Manly would fair at a hard game. He seems to mainly like playing short indie games, or games with unique ideas. More indie and from smaller devs than Rainworld.
The Portraits story has always scared me bad. Whenever I remember it, whether by seeing it online or having it randomly pop up in my mind, my stomach churns. So this game was set up to terrify me. The creepy atmosphere and lighting, unsettling creaks and groans, color choices, and spine chilling "paintings" made it much worse. The portrait in the bathroom scares the shit outta me (pun intended). The paintings that are chiaroscuro (using stark contrasts of light and dark) look like they are monsters in shadow, waiting to strike. And I think the others having blurry details made them scarier than if they were clear and visible - like you are squinting at something unknown in the dark, making out its vague shape. This game is just very well made, every detail terrifies me. Well done to the creators, thank you for my inevitable nightmares.
"It's like staring at a Last of Us 2 cutscene." Manly throwing out straight up savage facts.
That 0.2 in the 1.2 star review was the positive review someone wrote because the owners left just enough fuel for you to burn the house down if you really wanted to.
This is one of my favorite creepypasta. I remember how impressed I was by how simple, short and effective it is. Cool to see it adapted like this.
That yellow eyed eldritch baby made it to the frame, I can't even😂
The real creepypasta is AirBnB.
Thanks for taking the time to read the creepypasta to us at the end, Manly! I could listen to you read the entire phone book. Also, this was not the twist I was expecting. A lot of the portaits' eyes looked like a different color from the rest of the body, making me think that there were holes cut out at the eyes for actual people to stare inside
Manly: Don’t look at any of these portraits Also Manly: *Immediately looks at portrait*
"These were windows" That single line just made my heart skip a beat. I was expecting them to just be living paintings, but windows? Thats so much f#cking worse.
We got an impromptu short story narration, yay! Kudos to the dev of this game. This had me on edge the entire game.
The person asking for Manly to read bedtime stories may not got one but we got him to read a short creepypasta. It's an advance ! lol
_I always feel like somebody's watching me_ ♪ ♫ I loved that original creepypasta. It was always freaky to think people were looking at you all night with hatred. This was a good modernization of it with the B&B setting. The only clue you got that they weren't "portraits" was when the one was empty, then came back and you had to close the door. And yes, just like you said, some guests never survived, leaving food to rot and dirty towels. But others made it out. And figure, to get a 1.2 rating, at least 2 people out of 10 had to rate it 2/5 at least lol. Good lighting and sound effects!
Wow, more games like this. Absolute masterpiece of a horror game.
On the rotting food thing - a traditional sign of witchcraft is food "spontaneously" spoiling. Not necessarily connected to this short game. But I suspect that part of the cultural gestalt is why it shows up in so many games.
If this is based off the story I think it is, I'm both excited and apprehensive. It was the short but hard-hitting way the original was written that put such a vivid and brutal image into my head for literal years, and did wonderfully at evoking the fear of being watched while vulnerable, and fear of the unknown. Hoping the game is able to live up to it, and is able to tell the story just as effectively through a different medium.

Yessss. Creepy paintings/portraits are one of my all time favorite things!
This reminds me a lot of Phobia (horror game) text and mechanics really feel like it. Even the "original" story start is familiar, Phobia is definitely a good game to consider playing, its quality is still high.

"They were windows" is the single most chilling fricking line in any game ever holy fuuuuckkk i am sHAKING
these are my fave types of indie horror, ones that are kinda short story with focus on a good atmosphere and leads to a good ending twist, not 5 hours of running back n forth and collecting x key to fit y puzzle. It must help having a good base with the creepypasta but i love a good indie horror that takes a out-of-this-world idea or twist that would just destroy your brain if it happened to you and with this one, it could so even more relateable for the player
This was one of my favorite creepypastas when I was younger, really cool to see it finally get turned into a game.
I've got this picture of a lady in like a pearl chainmail cap pulling back a curtain with a candle in her other hand hanging up on the wall facing my bed and my friend said it's creepy. Then he told me he has a Nightmare On Elm Street poster by his bed and I'm like "what's creepy to you then??"
I think there is nirnroot hidden behind those paintings, could explain the ringing in your ears.
I see the troll face as a portrait.
Ya know, this is honestly the one time a creepypasta adaptation added a killer monster that im actually ok with, because the monster's used as a departure from the original story, without ruining the creepy vibes the original had thanks to the medium shift.

Manly, you’re the best! I love watching your videos.
Hmm, I think I prefer the base material creepy pasta. Think about this: Would you really rather stay in a place like this when you can actually just sleep in your vehicle? In the source material, the character is a hunter lost in the woods, so taking shelter in a vehicle isn't an option-- it's either creepy house or sleeping exposed out in the woods. I also think the opening could be condensed a little. It's a lot of words for "I'm too tired to keep driving, and I better sleep instead. There's this cheap motel/AirBnB/whatever with bad rating near me, but screw it, I'm staying", but this is just a very minor complaint-- perhaps some people will find it good for setting the mood? That said, the game IS creepy and scary! The death thing coming out of the pantry got me a little, and I definitely felt the uneasiness, so that's very good. Oh, and major bonus points for never using jumpscares (with sudden loud noises)! (And the brief shining eyes on portrait when we came out of the bedroom was great.)

If I ever rented an AirBnB and saw that it had paintings like this all over the house, I'd burn the house down the first second.

Me too 😂
CLASSIC Creepypasta, a little touched up.
Who on earth would put "Saturn Eating his Son" up as just casual decoration for their fuckin Airbnb?
Well its alr late .... guess im watching this before sleep
genuinely when this started i was like "huh this sounds like a creepypasta i read ages ago" lmao also it's funny to imagine these people stayed at a haunted airbnb, survived, and decided to leave a bad review on it
