Creepy Bad Endings # 83

Bad endings. I don't know about anyone else, but they terrify me. Just when the hero(es) thought everything was finally right, just when it looked like peace had finally returned to the world, something happens that, at best, creates a bittersweet victory and, at worst, spoils everything and the enemies win, despite everything that happened throughout your adventure. Bad endings don't give you any second chances, you screwed things up for everyone and you must pay dearly...

I remember in Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland, if you don't continue after a game over, the hand tries to wake Kirby up, but Kirby inhales it and goes back to sleep. That was way more creepy to me than it had any right to be, especially the part where the hand frantically walks on the ground trying to escape Kirby's inhale, but to no avail.

8:31 That's right... the game is literally mugging you to get you to pay up and continue playing. Street Fighter 2 has your character severely beaten up and bloodied as a countdown ticks down, letting loose a final, desperate grunt before the portrait turns gray and fades out, implying death from their injuries. Earthworm Jim 2 probably has the most upbeat continue screen ever. Love that guitar solo.

I've always thought that Kirby never actually dies when he gets a Game Over, merely loses the energy/will to fight anymore. Except in Kirby Mass Attack, where losing all your Kirbys will show you a screen with a dead one, since each one has only 10% of their power, thereby making them less invincible than normal. That Game Over screen sends chills down my spine whenever I see it, and the music alone is enough to make me cry.

When you mentioned the Kirby game overs, I'm surprised you didn't mention the game over screens for Mass Attack and Planet Robobot. Robobot, it's the standard Kirby napping after getting the game over, but it's the background that looks like the EKG reading of someone who's barely alive. Mass Attack, he. Actually. Dies. No implications, nothing. Just a greyed out angel Kirby in front of a spotlight with what looks like a darkening Pop Star to some pretty depressing sounding music.

On the topic of continues, Nightshade on the NES has a form of it in that when you run out of health, you're placed into a death trap that you can escape if you figure out how. But when you lose all your health a fifth time, it's impossible to escape from the trap you're put in, so you're just forced to watch Nightshade die

The "duty" ending is my personal favorite, not just for unlocking endless mode, but also for the implications about the player character. Spoilers below the break. Completing the game while remaining loyal to the Arstotzkan regime leads to your audit coming up almost completely clean barring a few "minor discrepancies". In a country as totalitarian as Arstotzka, even they failed to find much to fault the inspector for. Meanwhile, relations with Kolechia, the border nation that has been at odds with them, have warmed and travel restrictions are easing coming the new year (which endless mode starts in). All in all, things are looking up.

So I'm a couple years later here, but an interesting note about Final Fight- The arcade version has a bit more animation for all the characters (3 frames instead of 2), and Haggar is the only one bound in chains--Cody and Guy are tied to a chair with rope. Also, there's only one "animation speedup" once the clock hits 4 (For some reason, the ten seconds you have to continue in the arcade are 9 through 0, not 10 through 1). The net effect is Cody no longer looks like he's about to break his neck, and Guy looks more properly panicked at his predicament as opposed to the "Mid-transforming-into-a-werewolf" thing he does here.

Glad you mentioned the Smash 64 continue screen/game over, because that one traumatized the shit out of me when I was a kid, and gave me recurring nightmares for half a decade following. Not kidding at all. Staying up a biiit past my bedtime at like age 6, got my ass kicked by master hand, decided to call it a night, hit "no", and the only light in my room were those eight letters spelling "GAME OVER" and the normally-jolly announcer reading it with that horrible, droning background noise. It's odd, because Smash isn't a scary game, but that was the first time a video game made me truly, genuinely afraid. Strange how the silliest things in games can have such a lasting impact, huh?

Personally I think a continue screen that should've been on here was the screen from Maximo: Ghosts to Glory When you die, Death approaches you nice and peacefully, waiting to get death tokens, if it wasn't unsettling enough, when the timer reaches single digits, a gong starts to sound as time runs out ans Death's patience where's thin. When the clock hits zero, Death angrily slashes you down as eerie cackling is heard even on the title screen Also, it's also a raise of tension that if you pay him, the number of tokens required to continue increases, and if you don't have enough, enjoy a slash from a cloaked skeleton

I really like the Super Star one because it's like "aww, the hand guy made him all comfy! The bean gets a nap now! Makes me wanna set this as a wallpaper somewhere!" I'm not into arcade fighters so I never heard of most of these, but that last Mortal Kombat one... hOO also that jojo one reminds me of something... when weeg house the third one????/??///???// (just kidding but i'm surprised i haven't seen you cover it yet-)

Starlancer - If you kill your teammates you literally cut to a scene where you're led to a room forcibly by your commander, blindfolded infront of a firing squad and all you hear is the orders to shoot and then the gunshots and game over. Mind you this is all first person and you see just black after the blindfold. I played this game when I was super young and it's always stuck with me, but for some reason no one has ever mentioned it.

I think of the continue screen from Street Fighter 2, where it shows the bloody face of your character after losing with the announcer counting down from 9. If you don't continue, you hear the KO scream and their picture fades to greyscale. The original Street Fighter pulled something similar to Final Fight, where it shows a bomb with a countdown, and if you don't continue it explodes, although it doesn't appear that anyone is around when it happens.

I really wish I could remember the name of this one game, but it was a PC medieval RPG. Had that very, very old feel to it. Combat I think was tactical - you had to move your characters around and give them commands and so on. Again, I THINK it was like that...haven't played that game in literally decades... But dying in that game stuck with me forever. If you lose a battle, you get a game over screen where you hear your team being massacred. Human screams mixed with monster roars and grunts and I think even the sound of ripping and tearing....I was like, maybe 10 at the time when I heard it and it still haunts me today. I never touched that game again.
