CREATOR STORY | How We Made the New Specialized Tarmac SL8

Спорт

The new Tarmac SL8 is the fastest bike we’ve ever made, and for this to happen, a series of almost miraculous events needed to occur. In this video, you’ll meet the team behind the SL8 and hear all the details on what makes it so revolutionary and superb that the Product Engineering Lead got emotional on his first ride. This is the One Bike to Rule Them All.

The cheapest version of this frame will be a much better bike than the S-Works SL7. UCI rule changes opened this up for them. Cannondale's SuperSix is the first road frame from a big manufacturer designed under those new rules. Everyone will be making a big jump with their next frames

@KartGuy76 it's called understanding engineering. The fork is a huge part of a bike's drag. If the rule changes only applied to forks, the gains would be sizeable. You're not special though. Science deniers are everywhere.

I recently saw the SL8 and in a shop, among the Aethos, the SL7 and one can be very impressed how simpler (in the noble sense of meaning) they looks like years by year - Aethos is a perfect example. Despite it looks like a "deja vu", it seems that this is the result of new iterations and researches, rendered even more efficient by the new generations of tools and expertise - all domain for such an industrial mass product, all combined in one model. Looking at the bikes becoming simpler, more and more free from superfluous elements when it comes to high performance, I tend to think that it is moving step by step, to the perfect shape, perfect characteristics. Of course, there are still lots of secrets that the public might not be able to access to, yet I like so much to look at the evolution of Specialized products.

Well, I would argue that for cornering it's not the frame nor the rider but the tires. Moving to 28mm tires and tubeless tires might be the single most important improvement in how the bike feels. Wider tires improve comfort, traction, rolling resistance. There's a slight aero penalty but only if you reach high speeds which you only really reach in straight lines. But of course now the newer bikes are made to accommodate these wider tires and be aero with those wider tires. In recent years that's where many significant improvements have been made, however that's also where a significant amount of effort still has to be made. But a bike is a whole package so what changes are made there lead to change in wheels (inner diameter, aero profile to match the tire), frame (air flow especially for the front wheel) and so on.

While I love riding my ultrallight Cannondale Supersix Evo with rim brakes and aero carbon wheels on the flats, rim brakes are terrible in the mountains compared to the disk brakes on my SL8. Tarmac SL5 and SL6 with rim brakes were the last real road race Tarmacs. Lighter faster and more practical than SL7 and SL8 and won tons more palmares in comparison.

I must have a heavy SL5… It’s an s works from 2015, Dura ace 9000, rival clx 32s and its 7kg bang on.. isn’t that heavier than SL8?

@SuperTaylor68 I can't explain your experience. My rimbrake da9100 sl5 sworks was 14lbs 14 Oz 56cm frame, pedals I included. Now I have an sl6 and it's 2 Oz heavier, ride ready. The sl6 is more comfortable than the sl5, but I can't tell any difference between sl6 and sl7. The sl8 is a ridiculous price and I won't be buying one.

At 3:18 they start in with what is “taboo” in engineering, because engineers don’t do that. The same thing holds for marketing. Every bike company shows pro riders on it’s bikes and compares their advancements with those pro riders. I’ll point out that none of the pro riders in the film buy their own bikes, if you’re going to sell bikes to riders who are a little closer to the center of the bell curve, perhaps you should market the advantages the bike offers to those people. Lastly, there is the bit where the engineer describes descending on the SL8, but the video clearly shows a pro rider. My least favorite cognitive bias is when people’s skill level is tied to their title or job - the bike engineer who must be an excellent bike handler or the clothing buyer at the bike shop who must know all about riding in different conditions. It’s what lowers the value of real experts (if there truly are any) to nothing. A scientific method must be based on testing and a learning environment must be critical. This film is neither of those, it is marketing.

How did we get here from the golden days of SL5 when Specialized partnered with McLaren to optimize their layup and S-Works models offered slightly different geometry to Specialized models, rider specific engineering? Now there is hardly any trying in engineering but trying real hard to convey and sell emotions to people who don’t know better. When I watch the old Specialized videos I used to see engineers with sensors out in the field with riders taking data, now the guy is telling us he feels the “speed sniffa” effect and that he was in laughter after the best descent of his life 😂😂😂 I’m laughing too.

Printed Power Saddle. Dura Ace Di2 12 Speed Groupset FSA VISION METRON AERO CARBON COCKPIT & Time Xpro 15 pedals . Under 6.8 kilos . The SL7 S-WORKS 54CM TARMAC ride is at least 25/35 % Better 2 Ride . Faster & safer down hill . Just planted on the Road . Accelerates faster . Doesn't suffer in X winds as the SL5 . Saw a SL8 S-Works in my Bike Shop in Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺 Saturday just passed & it is lite , very lite . Aero even more so . So best u go 2 ur local Specialized bike shop & do a test ride. Just mouthing off as u r doing without experiencing how they ride goes 2 show u aint that Smart. The have there Pro Peleton Riders giving them Huge feed back . Just Like F1 Drivers do in there Sport .
