Creative Quickie: Why it's so hard to finish our projects

In my e-book, Cross the Finish Line (Original Impulse, 2008 amzn.to/2xN7Wdl ), I shared a model for the creative process to help understand why we are more in love with our ideas then with finishing things. In this video I share the model to help better understand what's so difficult about finishing.
Start finishing your projects; get my e-book on Amazon if you need a boost to keep going to the finish line. amzn.to/2xN7Wdl

This is really helpful as I am trying to put together an art portfolio. I have tons of projects that are 80% finished. They stop feeling creative and fun and this is when another idea typically pops in my head and I set the current project aside so I can get those endorphins again from the beginning of the creative process. Thank you for explaining it so well. It makes sense why so many people have great ideas, and so few people are able to realize them.

Glad this was helpful! I hope it guides you toward finishing a project or two that is deeply meaningful for you. Learning how to withstand the pain as we enter the narrow of the funnel will give you so much confidence and self-understanding.

My biggest obstacle currently on my sabbatical, is that I have to constantly interrupt my work with eating, sleeping and going to the toilet.

So insightful! Thank you for sharing this! I've been meditating on this proverb: "Better is the end of a thing than its beginning, and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit." (Ecclesiastes 7:8) To more completed creative ideas!

I was having this problem. Now I know it's not just me. Know I have an idea why it's so easy to start a project, and not finish.

This is fantastic Cynthia! And the timing couldn't have been better for me. I've just hit the painful, fear-based reactive mode on a big project. Having this model is a helpful reminder that will keep me going. Thanks!

Great video Cynthia. Now I know to remember "The Funnel of Creativity" when it gets rough and tough through a given project. There is also joy and results at the end of the "Funnel". I just promoted it on Twitter. Thank you Cynthia!

Thanks, Emmanuel! I am glad it was helpful for you. It's definitely in those final phases where we need the extra incentive to keep going. It's shocking how difficult it feels. Thanks for sharing!

thank you Cynthia! Love that your process (& funnel diagram) is really so simple. It helps me to acknowledge myself in that process and to buckle down when it gets excruciating - I deserve to celebrate all the rewards of completion!

The fluctuating between the top, and the narrow part of the funnel are similar to someone with bi-polar disorder! Lol I wouldn’t say I have bipolar issues, but I go through times when I do fluctuate. I simply call it a rutt. Once I realize that I’m not completing any of my many projects I have to get myself out of it, and get back on track. Along with the usual housework I have numerous craft, and sewing projects I hope to complete. Not completing them is very discouraging, and the only way I know to feel better is to snap myself out of it, and complete something, and then continue to make another.

Looks exactly like my plan to write a huge story. Got all characters planned out, created whole another universum And then Have no idea how to play along some parts of the story and writting only one chapter

  • @CynthiaMorris

Start with one chapter and let the story lead you. You will go down some false trails but it's not a problem. Better to start and take a circuitous route than to sit on the sidelines wondering and dreaming! You can do it!
