Creative Burnout as a Content Creator

This video is a bit different from my usual content, but I think sharing the crafting fails is important too. The internet is messing up all our brains♥️

When you are feeling down (I've had depression on and off for 40 years) watch funny videos to distract yourself and prevent the cycle (feeling down so dwell on things that make you feel worse). With that in mind i recommend "Smack the Pony (1999) 4K AI Remaster" Its piss funny.

A while ago you mentioned a dedicated video about the math to make a corset. Maybe this could be a video to do now where you are not responsible to "troubleshoot" a project when youre feeling uninspired. Recharge creatively, and share your insights and knowledge from practicing your craft. You're so wonderful inside and out 💗 rest and your creativity will return!!!

A few things 1. You ARE enough. Your creativity is a joy to witness 2. I suspect that it's the time crunch on elaborate projects that is burning you out. 3. You are lovely without makeup, and I hope you can come to accept yourself more. 4. Creative endeavors are difficult and frustrating. You're doing amazing things, even when they don't turn out how you imagined

I agree on all 4 to also include too much self judgment and criticism. Your creative mind is AMAZING! The stuff you turn out is fantastic. You're willing to try. I believe you're horribly burned out and so many KZreadrs are being pummeled by those stupid algorithms (I've heard other rants). Take a break. Self-care , cut yourself some slack. Beautiful soul that you are, you got this.

Not to undercut your ennui, but (as a designer) I think all creators go through this. It's like hitting a final boss of a level. You bang your head against a brick wall, looking at a blank canvas, nothing you have ever done is good, why do people like your stuff... all those 'helpful' thoughts. Then one day, you level-up (literally and ffiguratively) and things are good again. It's exhausting and infuriating. You are spectacular. You got this.

You’re not the first content creator I follow who has put out a video about how the stress of the vagaries of social media is really getting to them, and it breaks my heart that people whose work brings me so much joy suffer so much due to the very nature of the job. You, Rachel Maksy, and Bernadette Banner are massively inspirational to me - I’ve started sewing under your influence, and for the first time in nearly four decades of life have started really exploring my own visual creativity. Please, Ariel, take a break if you need to, but don’t you dare pause Patreon if you do! I will happily offer my meager patronage through any hiatus.

I spent 4 years getting a degree and the biggest thing I learned was from my fellow classmates: that literally everyone, from the most talented to the most beautiful to the funniest and the most interesting, fails to see themselves as what they truly are. I love your videos because you’re insanely talented and hilarious and so effortlessly gorgeous, and even though your aesthetic is not my aesthetic you’re far too interesting and entertaining for that to make me not want to watch your videos. I’ve loved them all and am usually smiling through the entire thing as I watch. I love that you turned this video about burnout and depression into something beautiful with your encouraging words and patchwork quilt analogy. I know from experience that kind words from others don’t always help to lift depression, because you have to believe it for yourself, but here’s a little bit of evidence for you from a total stranger who has no reason to lie: the truth is, you’re way more than good enough!

I vote: 1. Take a vacation (it helped me get out of a stuck rut, didn’t fix everything but reminded me that life is fun and beautiful) 2. Drag your projects out into multiple videos. I love all the tips and tricks you share and literally everything about your videos. I know I’m not alone when I say I would be excited seeing the steps for a project and eager to see what’s next in the process and not at all be upset it wasn’t start to finish in x amount of time and all in one video. Relax, have fun and let yourself flow at your own speed. You have a community of strangers that love you, even when you’re feeling trapped in darkness. I also know from experience we can tell you you’re beautiful as much as we want but it doesn’t magically help you to see it yourself (lost my butt length hair to cancer and haven’t felt beautiful since, it’s almost annoying when people try to force their opinion of how I look into me). That being said, I hope you (and I) get to feel as beautiful as others see, and I hope it happens very soon ☀️✨

Creative burnout and self-doubt come with the curse of creativity. It's all part of the process. It's not linear. It's chaotic and messy. Do what you need to do to be healthy and happy. Take a vacation, collaborate, find a helper, whatever you need to do to find joy. Easier said than done, I know! Also, your English is amazingly fluent, idiomatic and delightful.

Oh Honey! I was crying along with you! It really sounds like you're dealing with burnout. You are an incredibly TALENTED and BEAUTIFUL woman! You are so refreshing to watch, and you help me when I'm stuck in a creative rut. I love how real you are when you are doing a project. You show the true process, and I am so thankful! I even show your videos to my kids sometimes, and I'm so glad that they have someone like you to watch and see the realistic process when it comes to creating. Also, although I don't want to focus on looks, I have to say that I love when you show yourself in everything from no makeup to full on glam in your reveals. You are lovely with and without makeup! In fact, I've often thought that you have one of those "historic beauty" faces that could fit into any era with or without makeup. As a woman in my late 30s who has also experienced extreme burnout this year, I want to thank you for sharing with us while you are in this extremely vulnerable place. It's just another example of how realistic and relatable you are. Thank you! *edited to add that as an English language tutor to students studying English as a foreign language, I have to tell you that your English is wonderful! So please don't feel self-conscious about your accent! Being able to speak more than one language is impressive, and putting out content in a second language is such an accomplishment! Also, if you ever don't feel like speaking English in your videos, I know I speak for a lot of your watchers in saying that I don't have any problem with reading subtitles. Have a lovely day, and I hope that you are encouraged by all the love people have for you in this comment section!

The skull looked to me like it was finished even without the disco ball. In fact, like this it reminds me of Damien Hirst's "For the Love of God" skull which "consists of a platinum cast of an 18th-century human skull encrusted with 8,601 flawless diamonds" (quoted from Wikipedia but I don't think KZread would let me put in a link). And your version seems to give concrete form to your conclusion that "we're all going to die anyway" so we might as well enjoy craft and glitter while we can.

Dear Ariel, This morning I had a breakdown because a dress I started 3 years ago and made MANY alterations to still didn't fit. I had to make this alterations because I don't have the body shape that allows simply following a sizing chart, so the body image issues are added on top of the "I'm worthless at my craft" issue. Watching this video today of all day really resonates, of course I don't know the struggle you're going through as a business-owner, but as many others have said, we all see ourselves for less than we really are. I love your videos because I love watching what goes through your brain during your creative process. Even if it doesn't work out like you wanted. You remind me a bit of Rachel Maksy in that sense. You're allowed holidays ! Even more than that, you're allowed respite to heal from burnout. Even if it means 6 months off, your viewers will still be here. Also, you might want to explore the fact that what used to be your refuge / feel good place is now your source of revenue. As you explained, the change is really drastic and that means you don't have a safe space to unwind from stressors in your life. Finding another hobby that you wouldn't share on the internet but just do for yourself could help ? I'm sending lots of good vibes to you

I watch you and your channel because I like your creativity, your style, your quirky take on life, your humour (more impressive in a second language), and your beauty. Self confidence is something I have struggled with all my life, even though I have objectively great skills in a small area of creativity, so I totally empathise with you. Burnout and self-doubt is what led me to take early retirement, and for me, it worked - reducing pressure to perform has helped me take a step back and start really enjoying life again. Perhaps you are feeling overwhelmed by your massive projects, but I know that if you need a break, your fans will be there waiting. Ariel, there are only 2-3 KZread creators who I really enjoy watching live content from, and even just watching you unpack a load of gifted bits of cloth means so much to me. I have recently started coloring to relax from a very stressful job. I don't think of myself as an artist, I'm just playing with color and enjoying the process. Today, I went to a craft store and someone started talking to me about their quilting projects. She showed me pictures of amazing creations and asked to see pictures of things I've colored. I was embarrassed, but I showed her. She gave me so much praise and kindness that it inspired me to continue doing what I've been doing. She said that we should lift each other up and support each other as creatives. As I watched this video, I got the very same feeling. With every mistake, we learn something new. Each time we try something and it doesn't work out, that is something we may not try again. The point is that you keep trying and keep doing what you love. You're doing amazing things, don't be afraid to fail. We all fail and we are all here to support you and inspire you to try again.

A content creator (hate that phrase), that I used to follow, Zach Herberholz said once that, "the algorithm is a terrible boss," and he's right. Every content creator I've followed over the years has gone through this and it's all the result of making "making" your career. You have to put content out everywhere - KZread, Facebook, Instagram, Tik-tok(barf), and you have to do it all relentlessly to stay relevant. The more subscribers and revenue you generate, it seems the harder you have to work to keep your content relevant and keep the ad revenue coming in. I don't know what to tell you beyond the fact that my wife and I love watching your videos and you're honestly one of our favorite people to follow on KZread. The way you approach projects with whimsy and getting to see all the technical skill you bring to bear makes us want to use our sewing machines more. Keep doing what you're doing. We'll keep watching.

Oh, the life of an artist... for every finished project there are at least ten unfinished and "failed" projects stuffed so far into the depths of the closet that they have now become part of the monster living in there.. add the pressure of an audience to that and I cant even imagine the stress of it all! For whatever it is worth, you are not alone in the feeling of failure and self-image issues. That voice screaming at you inside your head has visited every artist imaginable since the birth of humanity. And I'm sorry it is hurting you! But you seem to have figured out that the smallest things done, are still things done. They still count, and are still art. So allow yourself some time with the smaller stuff, because I imagine we as viewers are here for the experience more than the final product! And for the love of all that is art, PLEASE allow yourself to take a break every now and then

Miss, I hope this does not come off as contrite, which can be difficult over textual forums and even worse online, but thank you for sharing all the projects you have completed and all of those you have started! Your comment in a live chat about not being afraid to start using a sewing machine has given me the nerve to actually pull out the machine I have tucked in a corner and use it. I'm not making anything as amazing as your work and likely never will, but I have a new hobby and am part of a new community because of you. I can only imagine the stress and pressure you are under, and while I would miss you and your channel dearly if you decided not to keep making content, I hope you are able to walk away if and when you want to without feeling like you let anyone down or did not succeed. You have achieved so much already and it is natural for people to change course throughout life. I'm rambling, but thank you for sharing your spark with us and do what you need to to feel better again.

I think the internet ows you a very big apology for making you feel like a failure, when it is talented, original and honest people like yourself this world needs most right know . . . and defenitly over the perfect Instagram that is far from perfect behind the scenes. That is actually something that I miss most about viewing content . . . the struggle to get their, and not always getting their despite it. People who do say loud and clear "I am not 100% happy with it" but do find enjoyment in the process nontheless. So pleas keep doing that, because I do really think the people that stick to your channel love the way are and do things. And I for one love the skull. All you really have to do is putting him on a sunny window sill and let the sun do its magic. As someone who watches a lot of DIY/maker channels of all kinds of materials (costumes, wood working, machining, fibre arts, etc.), I cannot tell you how much I appreciate when people show their failures and mistakes. As soothing as those silent lathing videos are, nothing ever goes wrong! It always looks so precise & perfect! Then when I actually get into my shop and it's difficult, stressful, and sometimes takes 5 times to get it right, I am like... wait I thought this was supposed to be easy?! So I prefer watching creators that break down their process & show how they failed along the way. I love that you made this video, and also full of good advice that I don't take myself 🙃as someone who also worked through depression a few years back, it will take time, and be as easy as you can on yourself as you're on this journey. You're amazing and I've been enjoying watching your channel grow over the past couple of years! Take all the time you need.

It's always a fantastic boost for my confidence when I do it for myself because what you make WILL look so much better than it did back then and you already have the idea ready so you don't even have the pressure of coming up with a new one. It's basically a guaranteed win! Plus you get cool before and after comparisons that are always so interesting to see. Best of luck ✌️

Just last week I was thinking, "She's so beautiful and so dang CHARming, I can see why she was instinctively drawn to be a content creator- she's so fun to watch, and look how talented she is, doing those projects! Especially skilled at sewing- she can make her creative dreams come to life! I wish she would release another new video so I could watch more!" It doesn't surprise me that you've fallen ill with YT-itis, like they all do. But just remember that how you see yourself and your attributes is distorted by close proximity. Who can see their own worth clearly? You have an excellent image, a fun creativity and an artistic ability to match, PLUS a wonderful personality for us to watch and enjoy. I don't know if you'll take it to heart, since its just my opinion, but I hope you do hear me and believe me, and I hope you keep creating content for us. ❤

I've just got to come here and say that I'm so happy I found your channel. I've been watching your channel for a couple years I think (first video of yours I watched I think was one of the Rococo dress ones) and you always astound me with your talent, your creativity, and your resourcefulness. Not to mention, you are so cute and delightful and have a fun personality. I love that you do projects that make you happy and not necessarily follow trends. That's what I come here to see. A little bit of weird, a little bit of whimsical, often outlandish, but that's why it's fun! As someone who kind of hates their own voice (especially when I have to record and listen back on it), I totally understand the insecurities. But I think you have such a cute voice and accent. Your "Bonjour!" at the beginning of each video always makes me happy. I love when you can't find the words in English so you just start mumbling in French and then translate it the best you can. And the little comedy bits of "cliche French things" like the accordion music with the croissant shoes, just hits my particular kind of humor 😆But seriously, I don't understand the perception that non-native English speakers should have perfect English just to suit their audience. Of course you're not going to have perfect English; that's more than okay and should be embraced. That's part of you uniquely, as a creator! One of the other creators I love watching is Kathleen Illustrated, who has a very calming demeanor and style and videos; she just put out a video on burnout. I recommend giving it a watch and I hope you take some time for yourself to get some rest. Also, I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be perfectly happy with seeing your videos every other week than every week so that you give yourself time to rest in between projects. Or to just see WIP videos instead of full finished projects. Just some food for thought!

At the beginning everything was fun and happy but then I started having the "I'm not pretty enough" problem when retouching my photos, feeling that my craft is not well designed, and so on. I assure that you're doing a brilliant job with your humour (I really love your reveals!) and your genuine attitude, and above all you are beautiful and your creations are stunning and fun! It's the fault of all those media platforms which place unnecessary stress on creators😢

We watch because we like YOU, watching you make things that give you excitement and joy. We (the audience, but probably not the algorithm) would be happy with less frequent but detailed videos or several videos with each part of a project, whatever gives you the freedom to get back into creating joyfully. You are absolutely enough! There is no way you cannot be. You always look lovely (joy and excitement radiate, they cannot be bought and applied) and please remember, it's not normal for someone to be studying themselves like a separate person - before cameras, we would only ever see a live, in the moment, reflection of ourselves in a mirror - editing photos or videos from the past is a real mind trip. Please hug 'Not My Cat' and get some much needed rest, we adore you

Stretch out your projects, make the videos smaller if you need to, make the projects smaller. that little disco skull made me so happy! I didn't care that it didn't spin around, I just thought 'oh! How clever she's cutting the shiny stuff in strips to make it more even!' If you had just gone out into the yard and danced around with the disco skull catching the sunlight, I would have been like 'nice, Ariel is doing such fun witchy summery stuff!" We're pretty simple. Maybe you won't dominate the world of content creation with such an approach, but many will love you for it.

Editing alone is EASILY half of my workload, probably more, even before other admin stuff 🤡 Truly I'm so glad to be on this path, and I knew what I was signing up for, but it's impossible to overstate the years it takes to actually figure out how to build a sustainable, long-term career like this. For me, the massive time sink of editing just means that there's SUCH a big gap between when I craft something, and when I actually post about it. That feels like my number one thing I'm still working on improving. Love your stuff and sending LOTS of support to you figuring out your own balances!! 💜

As a fellow KZreadr, and just a creator in general, it was so refreshing to see this. We all have our failures but it's not something most creators share so we think that they are just amazing and are doing it right and why can't I just be more like them, and it turns into this ugly pressure we put on ourselves to do better and be perfect. but it's not realistic and leads to more disappointment in ourselves.
