Both are equally important.

I like Tim Cain's approach to humor: Situational and no inside jokes. Comedy often suffers when it's forced (non-situational), or as he said, to get a joke, one has to know what it's referencing. People's knowledge of pop-culture and general subject matter ISN'T as big as many think. So, it's nice to hear they took a more universal approach because that means it will be funny for everyone.

Absolutely. Fallout would have suffered from some of its outlandish/absurd humor if he only referenced comedic things he is really into, for one example, The Simpsons.

Ive ways loved obsidian games... all of them, and I see why now a lot more. These guys are so genuine and passionate about their work. They have an obvious love for the art and entertainment they are making. No teasers, no trailers, no open betas no massive pr campaigns... just these guys talking about their game has sold me on it. Getting it day one.

@Grym mostly also fallout and Skyrim type games are sort of too big for me to replay. I have a short attention span sorta so I don't like replaying a 100 hour game where I might get 10 hours of new content at most. It's like 90 hours of the same thing for the most part.

What I'm wondering is whether it's the result of not putting enough INT points into your character or you choose to be dumb in dialogue regardless of INT or skillset.

Game Informer, I had no major preferences on gaming channels until now. The way you lock down all this exclusive content and feed it drip by drip is addictive. And the rapid questions thing is always hilarious.

but also they're not going to be able to get that type of interview with every developer like say Bethesda .But these guys are very open and just put it out there I mean for as much as they can put out there right now .and are the right people to talk to because they made the game they know what they want to say and what they don't want to say they don't want to spoil it for you because they want you to enjoy the game as a new experience but they don't want you to walk into a blindly either.

This is quickly becoming my most anticipated game of the year

Bioware started leaning towards too much comedy in DAI, and then went full on silly with Andromeda, so we know that doesn't work Fallout 2 has the best combination of humor and dark themes in any RPG, so hopefully they will nail this one

Bioware needs better dialogue writers. The actors in DAI were exceptional and the writing was good enough. But MEA literally had all amateurs. They could always improve though. (Even the story was about an amateur haha) But since Bioware Montreal closed, damn, it's unlikely to get new Mass Effect games. But maybe a game about C-Sec in ME, would be great for dark humor!

I thought the writing in Inquisition was pretty good and Dragon Age had always quirky humor in it since Origins. Andromeda was just awful. The only "decent" characters in that game were Vetra, Drack and Jaal.

@@Largentina. Honestly, Rick surpassed this character a long time ago. I know people still love back to the future, all the nostalgia and etc.. But purely as a character, Rick reached a higher level. So it's not a "sin" when you see people associating the mad scientist with Rick instead of dr Brown

Considering one of the big complaints I hear about Anthem is the constant comic lines from those in town, I really hope these guys can balance this well enough. Personally I like things to be mostly serious, with small amounts of humor just to add some life to it.

Tim and Leon obviously have their Charisma above 5. i cannot wait for Outer Worlds and while i am a fallout (1,2 & NV) fan its simply refreshing to see a RPG made by a team who cares about consistency and diversity in their writing/gameplay as well as player agency. thanks for these interviews GameInformer. i hope there is more to come!

Games I'm definitely picking up in 2019 Metro Exodus(✔), Sekiro, Outer Worlds, and if tbe rumors are to believed Cyberpunk.

No Dying Light 2?

I've always enjoyed Cain & Boyarsky's games and listening to them talk about how they make TOW I love them even more! Really can't wait!!

I really hope this game gets the attention it deserves and I hope the Outer Worlds will become a franchise. Obsidian deserves to grow into a bigger company to get the resources they need to make games with more content.

Seeing this makes me know that Arcanum was definitely leaning to Boyarsky, Fallout with Tim Cain. These guys make a great combination. I'm excited to see what comes through when this game releases.

I love the consistancy of the dark humor in all of Obsidians games. Cant wait for the dark humor in The Outer Worlds.

My biggest problem with Pillars of Eternity 1 was how everything is way too serious. Some characters do have quirks that are supposed to be funny but they come across as “throw in” for the sake of it. Like Eder liking “fluffy soft things”. This made PoE 1 feel like so generic compare to other Obsidian games. Pillars of Eternity 2 had much more humor and made the world feel alive and memorable.

Even the huge AUNTIE BIOTICS SECRET LAB 0027 sign was funny

Subtle humour done right

It’s so refreshing to see game developers this transparent and open about their game. It’s so hard for some developers to admit their game isn’t the best and may not suit everybody, but Obsidian cares so much about the people who play their games that they’re open to admitting stuff like that.

No, I believe you're missing the point. Borderlands is comedy 95% of the time. They're talking about an equal balance of both for Outer Worlds. If you play KOTOR 2, you'll understand what they're saying.

I'm excited for the game. And I really just like heading these guys talk. Such a great atmosphere and vibe and I think thatl make me enjoy the game so much more

examples of situational story driven dark humor that works perfectly: In Baldurs Gate 2 you have to get admitted to the spell hold as a crazy person. You go to convince the administrator but he's not buying it until you have him talk to MINSC about his hamster for a few lines of hilarious dialogue. Fallout 3 when you buy Charons contract and he calmly blows his old boss away befor you leave Fallout New Vegas: Boxcars "the runner up in the nipton lottery" Fallout 2 when you change that mob bosses air supple for poison gas using stealth also Mr Fantastic in New Vegas .... I know he's not really story driven dark comedy but he's so hilarious you have to mention him.

I'm excited! This will be a hit!

This is gonna be like Firefly meets Deadwood made by Obsidian and Co-Directed by a RPG legend duo. I think this game is going to be great, and I wish it nothing but success so we can see more games like this from Obsidian and the industry.

There is an epic battle in my head and in my pants between this game and cyberpunk 2077. These 2 studios are bearing the full weight of the rpg genre on their own, and Obsidian joining MS worries me deeply 😓

I think something that will really drive me in this game will be the factions. I always feel like they play a big part in Obsidian's games and is why i love them so much. :)

@@michaelknox3715 There was the fallout style over the top 50s propaganda yeah, but I wouldnt have classed any of that as humorous (No clever pun or satirical undertone)... I mainly interpreted it as a stark contrast between rapture before and after the disaster, as a haunting reminder that rapture was a functioning society before decending into madness... Sorry for sounding pretencious, just my two pence :)

Best dark humor this year was making it an epic games store exclusive, nothing is funnier than the agonizing feeling of betrayal.

Not only can i wait to play this game I also can't wait to see the mods for it its gonna be great.

It's so hard to get hyped over a game anymore because so many fall flat. This is one of the few that I'm certain will be fantastic.

That is incorrect. The devs said they MIGHT add mod support AFTER launch but they made absolutely no promises. As it stands the game is launching with NO mod support. You might want to do some research.

These guys know what a rpg really means.

i really wasnt in the market for the shooter type of gameplay this is going to offer but the story and graphics are sounding awesome.im definitely keeping my eye on this one!

@@pizzaman1891 They've actually said this wont be like Fallout at all, they compared it more closely to the Knights of the Old Republic series.

I can't wait for The Outer Worlds. I'm hoping it's amazing so we can get more FPS RPGs from Obsidian. New Vegas is my favorite game because of Obsidian so i hope i can get more of that feel from more games and not boring/forced stories about my dad or son.
