CORRECTIONS As per usual, there are things to edit in the video. I have a processing disorder that sometimes leads to information coming out wrong or being understood wrong, so naturally I have to correct it. Here's the SH3 stuff: 1 - I said Usuda Hiro joined the SH3 team in 2001, I meant 2002. Whoops. 2 - Nora Stevens Heath is the translator; I don't know why my dyslexic brain keeps changing it to Nora Heath Stevenson. 3 - the recording of the music footage is from 2009, not from SH2, which makes sense in retrospect given the age that footage would've been. My brain read the title of the video and "part 2" and translated that to Silent Hill 2. -.-U

Man, I'm always amazed by the graphical upgrade that happened between the PS1 and PS2. It's just stunning. I mean, when you think about how limited the hardware was compared to now the facial animations are just gorgeous. We went from these chonky, jaggie, blurry polygons on the PS1 to these beautiful pieces of art. Just amazing.

It's something I've thought about and discussed with others before, but when it comes to sheer fidelity, the jump from the 5th console gen (PS1, N64, Saturn) to the 6th gen (PS2, Dreamcast, Xbox, Gamecube) has to be the biggest leap, and it probably always will be. Like yeah, the jump from 6th to 7th was also massive, but it's basically just life-likeness getting better and better. With the 5th gen, you had Cool Boarders, in the next, you had SSX Tricky & 3. Gran Turismo PS1 to PS2 is insane.

@@Housesider I get you, it really was a dramatic leap forward that was downright shocking at the time. Personally, I've never been more utterly blown away than I was as a kid when I went from playing the Sega Genesis/Super Nintendo to playing the PS1/N64. It really felt like being in some futuristic world when that era began, and then to have that followed up with the PS2 generation of consoles makes it seem like a lot of us back then were actually spoiled with such huge innovations forward like that.

She really is, and such a nice switch from the first two games. Across the first three games there's a fantastic selection of protags where you play as a heroic father, a disassociated husband in denial, and a teenage girl where Heather has a raw energy the previous two lacked. There's a part in SH3 where she's talking to the smarmy cult/priest guy who started talking shit about her dad, Harry, and I get so pumped when she responds by hitting the wall and telling him basically to STFU.

But still, I can’t believe the detail that this development team underwent to promote this game, it was just the perfect storm and as the years go by the original trilogy continues to calcify into pure gold. The passion and skill that this team had is just on an another level, I’m glad I was a kid during that time, it really was an innovative and exciting time for video games, the art transcends entertainment and this video essay really attests to that. I can’t believe how much better muse keeps getting with each vid, I remember hearing her use an iPhone mic back in 2018 and I still loved the content! Thanks for this video 🙏🏿

Fantastic job as always ! For the Vincent comment on monsters, I always interpreted it as this : Vincent is part of a religious cult, therefore those monsters might be angels in his eyes, as the demon in Heather's womb would be a god to him, thus to him killing Monsters is killing angels and is horrible, hence "they look like monsters to you"

The level of research you did on all of the 3 Silent Hills is outstanding. It is usually hard for westeners to get an insight into Japanese Companies and how they do things. You went in really deep and it must have taken you months to find, read and process all this informations into this 1 hour 41 minute video. This is on par with the no clip documentations. I never knew how much work went into my most favourite games, how much sacrifices people had to do to accomplish this.

This 3 part documentary also had the side-effect that brought me to the Wicked City/Demon City Shinjuku Blu-ray and the E-Books of the available Boogiepop Light Novels. It's insane how much work and effort you put into this documentary series. As a longtime fan, seeing such passion is amazing and someone finally is doing the work of the people behind these games justice. While Silent Hill 2 will be my alltime favorite in the series (have to admit P.T. was damn good but I do not count it as a Silent Hill game), I highly enjoyed Silent Hill 3 and there was some eerie story revolving around my then Ex-Girlfriend while playing this one. Really looking forward to your new book, would love to support you here. Best Wishes from Germany, Cheers and maybe a little wink to the german city you mentioned in the video: I do think you mean Hamburg. Maybe I've heard it wrong but pronounciation is simple - Ham-Burg. My interpretation of what Vincent said is that, as Alessa/Cheryl is the "messiah" and the creatures "come to witness the beginning", the creatures are supposed to be angels. Vincent thinks that it's interesting that the messiah sees the angels as demons. It also made me think of what Louis (played by Danny Aiello) said to Jacob in "Jacob's ladder": " if you're frightened of dying and... and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the earth. It's just a matter of how you look at it, that's all."

Thanks a lot for this! Though I do have something to say. The lyrics for the songs were written by Joe Romersa. He was the lyrics writer (and also was in charge of recording music, playing drums and recording, and even sang in Hometown) for both SH3 and SH4.

Well, unfortunately, it's not entirely clear. Various interviews say various folks were involved, and I think ultimately all of them, on some level, worked on Silent Hill's music, and probably more than one song had a handful of people's involvement. At the very least, four songs were translated by Heath, which may then have been adapted to the music and made more suitable by Romersa; it seems like he was later given more control on other soundtracks, but for three, he had less involvement.

I believe the PS2 era of SH was truly the best. Hard for me to pick a favorite because 2,3, and 4 tackle horror differently. That being said (typed?), something about SH 3 reall sticks with me. Could be the red-orange color palette, but I think there's something really eerie about the world OUTSIDE of Silent Hill being drawn into the Otherworld. The mall, subway, office building--great horror set pieces on their own. Great doc! great work!

This is going to sound silly but I played this in middle or high school and even though I was sort of aware of the fears and issues young women face, playing SH3 is what really made me think about them as a real, sometimes frightening thing. I'd say the game was successful in getting this across, and I kind of wonder how many other men had the same experience after playing this game.

I've really enjoyed your work on the channel, and I've learned so much about the development of these games, the themes behind them, and what inspires them on a symbolic level. It's both mind boggling and cool in how much research the teams obviously put into the games' lore, subtext and meanings. Thanks to you, I have also come away with an understanding on why I like these games so much, particularly Silent Hill 3 which still stands out as a great example of storytelling in games after replaying it a few weeks ago for the first time in over fifteen years.

So well researched, well-structured with great writing and great delivery. I follow several gaming channels with most covering gameplay and some coming from a production standpoint. It's great to see faces put to the people who made the game when they can often be lost behind the company or brand. It's great to see this franchise get some love when the Resident Evil remasters could so easily take attention away. I hope these games get remastered.

This one I don't know as well. Your rendition of the game's content, themes and ideas has made me regret not giving it a chance at the time, but I have to admit I'm one of those that dropped the game when I saw that Harry was dead. Shortsighted as it was, I really wanted him to have a happy ending, you know? In hindsight, maybe if I'd played the game that happy ending would've been the fact that his daughter was alive and well. I'll see if I get the game to play it, now that I can appeciate it even for the parts I originally dropped it for. Thanks for posting!

Extremely good documentary and I love the fact that you don't use the silent hill music or any other game music to fill the mood which gives this a lot more identity than other reviews and documentation of the series. Only thing that I will push back on is that the Aerith death scene in FF7 wasn't as "absolute" as you claimed since you can get a game over etc... I felt heavy emotions with it as it wasn't expected (played in 98)and propelled the story to completion... where as with Harry I had been through things with him but the disconnect with 2 and not seeing him in 3 really lead my emotional attachment to him to feel much less impactful being dead. Just lending my opinion as a converstation though no ill will or anything like that.(I know how the internet can be! haha) Great body of work though truly!

I can definitely see that, and I will say that Aerith's death is really well done, and so impactful, and it certainly hit me hard as a character. My point is less about how the audience feels than how the characters do - it feels a little silly that the characters use phoenix downs all the time but not on Aerith? (Obviously its just gameplay, but its that kind of dichotomy that I'm talking about). Heather's grief just feels very real in a way that feels rare in gaming, especially twenty years ago.

As I did with part 4 as well. But for me personally 3 hold a special place in my heart as my favorite period. And I lost my grandmother not long after. I was about to beat the game so I understand the characters lost of a loved one.. I so badly wish they would make another game that makes me feel the Way I do about this one and somewhat part 4 as well I've been extremely enjoying your videos on this amazing series ( the 1st 4 games that is) the only one I truly got info that was made by a western developer was shattered memories . While it was still a retelling of thw 1st game it did add that psychology added part to it or somewhat tryed to verse what downpour and homecoming did. That begin trying to copy what worked for part 2 and don't even get me started on that God awful vita Playstation game 🤮🤢 or that pinko machine 😒 🤦‍♂️ I was hyped to see what Kojima would have done with hills but that we know never happened I so badly want to see this franchise come back and with love as it once had in the 1st 4 games... made one day 😔🥺🥺😪😢

It was an enjoyable game from start to finish and the disturbing content was fantastically cerebral and a great gothic trip compared to the unscary Resident Evil games that came during the PS2 era. The best graphical leap in video game history has been jumping from GameBoy Color to GameBoy Advance, followed by PS1 to PS2. This game looks astronomically better than the first one. it would have helped to have a small video explaining the whereabouts of the first one or maybe a disc containing the first one. But I honestly wouldn't credit the disconnection of fans as a reason it fails on sales. It could be one that's for sure, Bu't I'm pretty sure they could have released the games almost simultaneously or at least in a span of 1 to 3 months and sales would have been different. Plus, i hnoestly don't understand the ridiculous amounts of money spent on marketing, especially those nurses and the paintball battle on SH2, as if they were trying to impress kids rather than actual critics. If it was me, i would've prefer a simple show at an event and a demo or a show reel like they did in SH3. BTW, this is my favorite Silent Hill of them all, it has a solid story and honestly topics that are hard to swallow, maybe studios like Dontnod or Deck Nine have talk about this in a mature way. But heather is such a complete protagonist, I didn't tought it had some relation to tlou2 either, although I didn't enjoyed that one that much.

Honestly at this point I'm kinda expecting to see a live-service Silent Hill game where you pick an iconic Silent Hill character and you fight in a battle royale esque arena.

You should tell the audience why you say the Japanese names backwards when you present them the other way around on the screen for the next “making of” for silent hill 4, for those who don’t know why you’re doing this. Thanks for putting all of this together!

13:54 Sorry but I just find the "Another World Nightmare…" part too hilarious. I was expecting something profound and directly involved in the writing of the story but then it just goes "Programming." I feel like coding-savvy people will appreciate that.

I love and hate Silent Hill 3. As a fan, i was hoping and wishing the main char would be somehow related to Harry but the scene where Heather finaly reaches Harry, makes me hate the game. Not really that they killed Harry, but because it happened off screen and we (as people playing the game) were robbed of seeing him in glorious ps2 graphics. But I do love the game, the story is good and Heather is great! When I was younger, like 25, I found her annoying and a bad character. But I grew up a bit, and realized she’s just realistic and actually well written character. It just sucks that Harry kick the bucket, because it would have been a great new game+ type thing if you could play as Harry, or Douglas, after finishing under 2h or something. And they would have diffferent weapons, Harry maybe being better with melee and new weapons, Douglas being better with shooting and getting some advanced firepower. Anyways I drifted off as usual, great video! I learned a huge amount even though I thought i knew a lot. Hope you make one for The Room and troll us with just showing The Room with Tommy Wiseu.
