Creating Generative Ideas With The

Музыка

**Open me, DAWg**
Howdy doody, Buckaroonies! Today we're here to talk about creating generative ideas with the Polyend Tracker and a few cool plugins. Whenever I'm out of ideas, I love using generative tools to start throwing random ideas at the wall and pulling something from them to kickstart a session.
Even when the result is random chaos, sometimes you start to pick out or create little ideas that can quickly snowball into a finished track.
I figured this might be a fun thing to share, and hopefully this technique and idea inspires you to get out and make something cool too!

6:00 you could have pressed Pattern + Copy and then go to the new pattern and press Pattern + shift + copy. Would have saved a few steps. But you’ve also shown folk how to copy & paste just certain tracks, which is all good too 👍🏼. Great video.

People..If you're not playing with the Tracker, you might be stuck in the same, same, same way of trying to create music. It's probably the best way to invest $600,and you can take it anywhere. It's coming on a trip with me this weekend..I use a tablet, laptop,Zoom recorder to grab sounds, and the Polyend Tracker to create organized noise...

@@VenusTheory I started with the Ensoniq ASR10,and people said all sorts of trash about it,because they could not get their head around it's so called 'limitations'.I even bought the 16MB RAM update and never installed it,and worked over 20 years with 2MB.It's my baby that runs my live setup on the turntables, with a Roland HS60,which i also run everything through.Since then,I bought Yamaha A4000 I gave away,a Em-u E6400,I have yet to delve into,a JamMAn,and the ROland MV8800,which is another unsung monster.I just recently got the Tracker, and more doors have opened, plus, this time I can travel around with it.I hate the preset mindset,so I am full out Open source, into Reaper, into VCV,into anything that keeps the mind going in different directions.

Sequencers can be a ton of fun to experiment with if they offer some degree of randomness available. You can get a lot of new ideas that way because they'll combine (or generate) combinations of stuff you may not think to try yourself!

This is great timing, I've had the Tracker for a year or so and have had a lot of fun with it just using it as more of a stand-alone. I only just recently starting trying to work it in with the rest of my gear, this gives me a lot of ideas

Thank you for sharing this! The fill feature is far and away my favorite feature of the tracker. Helps me get inspiration when it's hiding from me. Typically I leave it on bass lines, but definitely makes me want to try to leverage it for ambient stuff.

Got mine for Christmas & only just started using it. I remember seeing a tracker in the early 90s, when I was just 11-13. Went right over my head, far too complicated for me. All I was able to do was edit existing tracks. Even now I'm finding the polyend tracker+ complicated but I just need time. Kinda feels like I jumped in the deep end as this is my first instrument. It's clearly evident as my regen pattern sounds terrible. Which daw suits the tracker? Would the Behringer crave pair well with this? PS only other music hardware I have is midi controllers.

A lot of people talking about generative techniques talk about how these techniques can create ideas that can be expanded upon to create "a full piece" but I've never seen anyone actually show how they start from generative 'sketches' and produce a somewhat finished work.

Check out the new album Stochastic from Carbon Based Lifeforms! All generative compositions. I would guess though it's mostly due to the fact that the whole process just takes a lot of time, and doesn't make for a very fun/watchable video. Not too interesting to watch people noodle about for hours and hours.

@@VenusTheory Yeah, that's definitely understandable. Some general pointers would be helpful though. I've come across some videos talking about expanding loops into larger pieces and that has been useful but insight into techniques for doing that with generative material would probably be enlightening. Thanks for the music recommendation.

Hi Cameron, here Alexi from Colombia 🇨🇴 in South America. As usual fantastic and inspiring vid Cameron. I saw your video on euclidian rhythms using the Torso T1. How do you compare the capabilities of the tracker with the ones find it in the T1? Is t possible to achieve similar results. What are the advantages of one over the other?

Can you do this same sort of generative stuff with samples internal to the device? For example, could you use the fill function to generate random slices of a sample recorded live into the device. Kinda looking for something that mimics some of the functionality of Buffer Shuffler in Ableton.

Very cool! And I'm curious, since I am literally >this close< to ditching my current DAW for Bitwig: would it be possible to create something similar in Bitwig's grid and/or the new note FX? Not to recreate this precisely, but get something roughly equivalent.

Stochas is a free VST that does probablistic sequencing. He did a video on it to see if it's your jam. Note that if you do go with it and in Ableton, you won't get the layers to work with different MIDI instruments - as far as I can tell, it's just a part of how Ableton is coded. Other DAWs may not have the same issues.

  • @ilyrican

Would love to learn how you could do something like this directly on a DAW like Ableton Live. I think this has potential and is very useful but I’d rather experiment with the concept of randomness first to see if it would be worth the investment.

Old comment I know, but I recommend watching Ned Rush's tutorial called 'ambient plinky plonk in Ableton'. It doesn't cover changing the sequence length like you can do on the Polyend Tracker, but you could do that manually yourself (or using a random number generator/LFO perhaps) once you've resampled everything. I often open up the patch I made following his tutorial and just let it play for hours in the background while I do other things. Generative music can be quite amazing.
