Frank Bowman Exactly. Sauron is presented as a looming all encompassing force for evil in both the films and books. He is fear, loathing and dredd personified. And his ring is lust, treachery and temptation made manifest.

@Om Patel Hello Om Patel, I was confused by your statement calling Sauron a weak villain and that you "could also say that about Guardians of the Galaxy, but that doesn't justify for why he is a weak villain", which is what you wrote in reply to Frank Bowman who stated that Sauron was more an "Force of Nature" type of villain. _____________________ First of all, there are differences between "Antagonist" and "Villains", although they can sometimes share their qualities. A villain has to be evil or it isn't a villain, while an antagonist has to oppose the protagonist. ---------------- Antagonists can even be seen as fair competitors in the same race as the main heroes and protagonists. The top most popular advice videos on making villains at the moment are more about making antagonists, villainous antagonists or antagonistic villains. They are specialized mostly about individuals with personalities and possible relatability. ---------------- Sauron is a villainous villain, more specifically he is a force of nature type of villain. They aren't really meant to be relatable or sympathetic. You don't have to try to make at least some of the audience feel empathy for them. Often force-of-nature type villains aren't really meant to be individuals with vast personalities. Sauron is an evil presence for the story. He is evil as a noun... _____________________ Secondly, neither the heroes nor the villains in the movie versions of "Guardians of the Galaxy" are meant to be "force of nature" type villains. So you can't describe "Guardians of the Galaxy" characters as force-of-nature villains without being a liar or without joking. _____________________ Lastly, if your statement about Sauron being weak is about his power and not quality as a villain, then it really depends on what your standards are for something being "powerful enough". Also if you are comparing Sauron to characters or things from other stories.

Personally my favorite villain is the Joker. Especially Heath Ledger's depiction of him in The Dark Knight.

  • @TylerMowery

Yes Heath Ledger's Joker is great. Although he is different from the type of villain I discuss here. We have a clear understanding of Magneto's and Smeagol's motivations, but with the Joker, we don't have that. It doesn't make him boring, it makes him interesting in a different way. Alfred actually mentions this when he says that some men aren't looking for anything rational. They can't be bought. Some men just want to watch the world burn. The Joker is feared because he can't be figured out in the usual sense. He can't be blackmailed, his loved ones can't be held for hostage, you can't take all of his money and bring him down. The only time we get an understanding of the Joker's motivations is at the ferry scene. Where Batman asks him, "What were you trying to prove? That deep down, everyone is as ugly as you?" I think that is Joker's goal. Something in his past sent him down his path. And he is trying to force people into that same type of situation and make normal people murderers and monsters.

I think the joker was a nihilist, meaning he believes everything is meaningless and his killing and creating chaos was all in an effort to try and convince everyone he is right. You would probably find the joker felt insecure about being the only person of his mindset, I imagine that in some messed up way the joker thought he was doing the people of gotham a favour by convincing them of the truth or rather his perspective of truth.

This is why I love Thanos from *_Avengers: Infinity War._* He has a clear and almost understandable want: to wipe out half the population of the universe to preserve what resources it has left. His reasoning for doing so is he witnessed his home planet get destroyed and his people go extinct all because he didn't act (or more like tried to act, but was shunned by his own people for coming up with such an extreme solution to their survival). When you see that, you see a dude who is doing what he truly believes is right.

that's why the vulture worked in spider man homecoming, he wasn't just a guy who was evil for the sake of the plot, you actually sympathized with him, when you really think about him, you feel like what he was doing isn't all wrong. which is even more perfect to clash against spiderman's youthful naiveness that makes him see the world black and white, when in reality the vulture is a very "gray" character

Nice video, but when you say Doctor Mann's motivation was because he thought he was the only one capable of completing the mission that's not what Nolan intended. Rather the reason Mann faked the data and lured the ship to coming to his planet as well as everything else was pure and absolute fear, that he was so afraid of dying alone on a rock in space that he would sacrifice lives, potentially even the entire human race simply to have a chance to live a little longer. His very name Mann is an obvious hint towards the irony of his motivation. The name Mann sounding like man, a symbolisation of the human race. The fact he is built up at several points by being referred to as "The best man they ever knew" was entirely intentional because us humans believe us to be noble and for all purposes "The best" but when the time comes for such nobility to be shown a lot of people are not what they thought they were. I think the whole character of Mann was a not so subtle criticism of the human condition by Nolan. But yeah good video :D

This is exactly his true motivation. He wasn't acting out of love for humanity, he was justifying his actions by how lonely he became as a victim of the mission. He gave up on saving humankind because it was driving him insane. It was meant to demonstrate how superhuman and selfless the feat of saving humankind is in this movie. It's a theme that was also touched on in Dr. Strange, but Marvel messed it up because Dormammu didn't truly put Strange to the ultimate test.

The Punisher in Daredevil was fucking amazing. You totally understand where he's coming from. I just love how he and Daredevil were too powerful forces that couldn't help to collide. Their conflicting ideals caused them to get in each other's way, and when they did, the only way either could succeed was by defeating the other. I kind of wish that the whole season had been about him, rather than splitting it in half to focus on the Hand.

Well said. Psychopaths aside I think evil is more in the reasons behind the actions taken and hugely in the eye of the beholder. Such as little hobbits being 'evil enough' to destroy that previous ring you yourself have made with your own blood and sweat. From which perspective the story has been told hugely determine who is evil or not.

Lex Luthor is one of my favs, he tries his best to evolve humanity but superheroes like Superman cause humanities evolution to become stagnant because people become so dependent on him to save the world instead of doing it themselves, like luthor. Like driving a car without a seatbelt, they expect superman to save them before they crash, Lex Luthor believes Superman made the human race lazy and careless. He wants to save the world from themselves.

It is going to be animated and I am practicing art a lot more to prepare for this. We already have all of the characters made and I'm very excited to make this. He's pretty badass if you ask for me and my friends. I am gathering a lot of fans as almost all of my friends love and praise it. I have named this villain 'Elite' for how destructive, chronic, and drastic he is. If you want more info, please ask me. PS: This video helped me a lot as I wanted to check the characters aswell. Malcolm is such an underrated villain, his motivation is one of the most understandable and smypathizeable amongst all of arrow villains, and he is basically the opposite (but similar) to oliver. Both him and oliver, believe that something extreme must be done to keep their city safe, to keep away criminals from the street, but one drived by respect for his father, and one drived by vengeance and hatred. What really makes him good is also, because he was actually a big threat on the 1st season, he definetly had better skills than oliver (which no one see coming), he's basically the big boss kind of villain meaning he has a lot of power and money on his side, and he's actually pretty smart. On top of that, john barrowman acting is fricking great as malcolm, he has that charming mysterious but badass old guy kind of look XD, plus he always look sincere on his delivery on his lines, he's one of the best arrowverse actor imo.
