Creating A No Dig Garden Bed / Huge New Dahlia Bed

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today we are creating a no dig garden bed, using cardboard, topsoil, manure, and compost. This is a first time for us making a no dig flower bed, and we hope it is successful because there are a lot of weeds underneath!
I hope this has been useful and interesting but do let me know if you have any questions.
It’s difficult to know how to express myself on social media when there is so much sorrow and devastation in the world we live in, particularly in Ukraine. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine.

Thank you Annette. So sorry to hear you have had Covid, me too, after two years avoiding it. It was a big job you took on, but very well organized, good job hubby was the muscle with you not being up to par yet. It looked super when you had finished. Hope you are feeling fully fit very soon 😁👍

Annette this was interesting. Thank you. I did a no dig bed by laying black membrane down for a year and leaving it then putting a lot ( also Melcourt) of soil and soil improver down and planting into it this year. The only weeds I get look like they’ve come in on the air and they’re no trouble at all. Things are growing very nicely as I suspect this is the most well fed part of my garden. Do you follow Charles Dowding ? He is such an inspiration.

I know it is just shy of a moth since you made the video on David Austin James Galway climbing rose and you had the one bud. How is it looking now? I bet it’s all coming to life now

Hi Rio, yes! we have absolutely loads of buds and quite a few are in bloom already. I am so happy with the results and I found an old video yesterday of how I had (incorrectly) trained the roses upright in their first year - they look so sad! I will definitely post a video soon when a few more buds are in bloom. Thanks for asking 😁🌹🌷

Hi Annette, probably a silly question but I was wondering - if you are transplanting, (not sowing) do you cut through the cardboard or just leave roots to make their own way? Thanks again for the helpful video.

Hi Rois, the soil level is deep enough for us to be able to transplant all the dahlia tubers without cutting through the cardboard. I'd prefer not to cut through because hopefully the cardboard will help to kill most of the weeds and by the time it decomposes, there should be a lot less to deal with. 😁🌺🌿

I am brand new to dahlias and a bit late to plant my tubers for my area. I’m building a no dig garden bed this weekend in more rain, because it’s been so wet and I won’t wait any longer. I’m afraid the soil won’t be deep enough on top of the cardboard. What is the minimum you recommend? Thank you so much! I’ll watch through again to listen for my answer also. If this can work for dahlias this easily, I’m in heaven!

Hi Bethan, Good luck with your bed. This is the first time I have ever done this so I am not an expert but we have at least 8 inches of soil onto of the cardboard. I think if you are only planting dahlias in it then it may not even need to be that deep but we are going to use this as a 'normal' garden bed next season with shrubs and perennials so it needed to be deep. Charles Dowding really is the expert on no dig beds so please do refer to his videos on KZread. I think he also has some books #charlesdowding

Actually a couple of questions too: did you dig down at all below the surface to lay the cardboard ( it didn’t look like that but may have been the angle) and are you happy with the Melcourt farmyard manure ? I do like their other stuff but haven’t tried that and always worry about whether manure is well rotted enough . Thanks.

Hi, no we didn't did down at all. We literally laid the cardboard directly on top of the weeds. Love the Melcourt products (not an Ad). It did have a whiff when we opened the bags but it didn't linger long - it was definitely well rotted.

@@cottoverdi that’s good to know. I too like Melcourt so i am not too surprised to hear their manure is good too. Thanks.
