You can achieve more "iterations" by using recursive again. So, for example, on your first recursive transformation, set the instance to something smaller. Like 5 or so. Perform the scale and rotation of that transformation just like in the video. Press ok. Then, do another recursive transformation but this time, set the iterations to 20. Now, you have a tighter spiral with 100 iterations. All you will have to do is match the scale and rotation of your first transformation.

This was a very useful tutorial. It was a great intro to the forward slash functionality and makes it so much easier than manipulating individual layers to try to make these types of designs. Thanks!

That gfig tool should just be in the default toolbar!, Basic shapes are a fundamental design tool. Why are all these great tools youve never heard of hidden away

I wonder why you need to use the path/selection stroke rather than the stroke option in gfig...

7:13 I hold Ctrl & Shift down before clicking on the corner but it doesn't do anything. It's making the shape lopsided. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I've replayed this multiple times. If I move the corner without pressing the keys it acts the same as if I did press and hold the keys while moving it.

Hello, is there a way to make the transformation numerically exact, or is there only option to make it fumbled by hand until it looks "OK"? I mean like 20 iterations rotated 18 degrees fills whole circle, but I cant find way how to enter there the exact value.

Reminds me of a spirograph

There is an important issue with this that is not clear, and which I have finally figure out. When you are on the Recursive tool, and clicking in the corner box, it matters whether you click INSIDE the inner diamond, or outside the inner diamone. Inside, you move ONLY that corner, which can result in additional interesting effects, such as an off-center spiral (by doing each corner separately). Clicking outside the inner diamond, you get the symmetric effect shown in the video.

Everything works until the Recursive tool comes up. At that point, the recursive dialog is different in my GIMP (10.30), In the video, the drop-down menu below "Resampling method" says "Clipping", but mine says "Use the selection as input". When I CNTL-SHIFT-CLICK-DRAG, the rectangle around the octogon distorts. I did download GIMP again, and when I got up the Recursive tool as directed, the tool looked exactly as it does in the video. I am still trying to figure out how to get all sides to arrange at the same time - when I CNTL-SHIFT-CLICK-DRAG on the upper right corner, only that corner moves - to get the recursive shape, I need to do each corner separately.

Paul, you have to crop to content first and 'Use the selection as input' will change to 'Clipping'.
