I love this technique and use it a lot to transform recycled papers such as packing paper, envelopes and bread bags. Crayola makes a Twistable Crayon that goes on smoothly without making annoying wax "crumbs". All crayons do not work equally well and these are a great choice.

This was so much fun to play with. I actually have a pack of old crayons sitting around so tried rubbing on several different papers and got some pretty good results. Thanks for the idea!

Cat, can’t wait to try this technique! I’m curious if you’ve tried any other markers such as Neocolors or oil pastels… or even chalk pastels. I’m off to the rabbit hole!

What you refer to as an "embossing packet" or "embossing envelope" is much more widely known as an "embossing folder." I have quite a collection, and have been considering using them to create texture on the gel plate. I have done rubbings with them (and their predecessor, plastic texture plates from Provo Craft or Sizzix), though not using as refined a process as you show here. Having recently seen videos using Play-Doh to pick up textures and transfer them to the gel plate (which saves us the trouble of cleaning paint off the object being used-the paint just gets folded into the Play-Doh), I would probably do that rather than get paint on my embossing folders (though a quick wash with water before the paint dries should get most paint or ink off the plastic).

Loved this! Beyond the creative aspect you bring so much (common) sense to how you approach each technique always considering how you might use them in your collage art (e.g., using the 3 primaries, warm on warm, etc.). Be well.

Bravo! Was wondering if you were going to try this on the medical exam paper but perhaps too fragile? Does the wax resist matt or gel medium when you are adhering it to the substrate?

  • @catrains.artist

Hey Robin! I haven't yet purchased that type of paper, but you just reminded me that I want to! I have glued many of these papers with medium and it works fine.

I've done it on fragile papers like recycled tissue paper. Curves and circles are less apt to tear fragile papers. You can pick up subtle patterns from everyday objects and rubber stamps.
