Hello, I’m Anna Mason, and welcome to another exciting episode here at Nature Studio TV, where I aim to help you become the artist you’ve always wanted to be. Today, I’m thrilled to share a detailed tutorial on how to paint a realistic dog portrait in watercolor, focusing specifically on techniques for rendering fur.
In this video, I’ll show you how I painted a pretty spaniel that looks a bit like my own dog, Honey. I started with a high-quality photograph and sketched out the basic outlines, paying special attention to the fur's edges and textures, as well as the intricate details of the eyes and nose. This initial drawing served as a detailed map for my painting process. Using a fine liner applicator, I applied masking fluid to the whiskers, which are light in color and tricky to paint around. I then began painting by applying a pale layer of watercolor to the fur, starting with a very watery mix of Yellow Ochre and Payne's Grey to match the lightest tones of the fur.
Throughout this tutorial, you’ll learn how to layer colors to build up the fur's texture. This involves adjusting the length and angle of your brushstrokes to mimic the natural direction of the fur. As I progressed through the painting, I gradually introduced darker browns and black-brown shades around the dog's eyes and nose, enhancing the portrait's depth and realism. This video provides essential tips for achieving silky, realistic dog fur and fine white whiskers, setting the foundation for the entire portrait.
