You have the trinity, great Camera, great light and a great model. Excellent job Mark, great tutorial as always 👍👍😎
Great to see you back on KZread Mark. There's so much bad photography 'tutors' around that it's good to see you telling everyone how to do it properly.

I love how you got so many different looks in such a tiny space. It seems we are always looking for "cool" places to shoot, but we can actually create amazing portraits just about anywhere. And I LOVE the beautiful freckles on Tasiana's face! She did fantastic! Liked and subscribed.....looking forward to more content.

I appreciate this tutorial because you’re showing how we can get great portraits in ordinary bland environments that most of us exist in. You’re 1 of the best educators on this platform!

Awesome, thank you! I try to find good environments, but sometimes you just have to work with what you have. With studio lighting, almost anything is possible. That's why it's so fun.
Thanks for the lesson. You captured the model's confidence and beauty. Love the natural look of the soft light and the fact that she modeled for you with no make-up and still looked great! Next lesson - It would be great to learn how you shoot open shade with the use of a reflector.
@MarkWallaceVideos

Thanks so much! The wall and the glass door behaved as a reflector for these shots. I didn't need a reflector because the building was doing that job for me. I like your suggestion, I think we'll have to find a different spot and try with some reflectors and maybe even add some speedlights for extra kick. hmmmm....

@@MarkWallaceVideos Thank you for responding. I liked the way you used buildings and the surrounding surfaces for light. I once asked a groomsman to open his tux jacket, close his eyes and bounced a speed light off his white shirt, to light up the Bride and Groom in a dimly lit church. I was thinking for your next lesson, open shade in a park under a tree! Maybe in a barn with open doors and light coming in from open barn doors/windows and use reflectors to enhance the natural light.
@MarkWallaceVideos

hahaa, using the jacket and shirt is brilliant. There aren't a lot of barn doors in downtown Phoenix, but I'll look for options.

@@MarkWallaceVideos I had to improvise so many times on photo shoots and weddings. I once found a cardboard box to bounce light off of that was coming from a white building across the street! Each time the light is reflected the light is cut in half so you do whatever it takes to light up the subject with amazing light!
Mark, your photography skills are awesome! I've been watching your videos for years, if I were younger, I would gladly carry your bags for free, just to learn the finer aspects of the trade.

Great video and you’ve shown that using EF glass gives brilliant results without spending a fortune of RF glass. I’d assumed you were using the RF 85mm
@MarkWallaceVideos
Ай бұрын
I was using the EF 85mm f/1.2 L - the first version. The original. That lens is about 20 years old and still holds up.
Very informative! When you were shooting with the buildings behind did you use spot metering? I have the R6 and wish the spot was the same place as the AF point.
@MarkWallaceVideos
Ай бұрын
I was using Evaluative metering. I use it 99.9% of the time. It is so good on the R5 I rarely need to use anything else.

I’m in Arizona now. I’m in the States more and more but still not full time yet. I’m working on it. Housing costs are expensive now 🤯
Very good content! Do you have a new video on fill flash to balance an over exposed background? flash will also provide a catch light. Thanks
@MarkWallaceVideos
Ай бұрын
Yes, soon
In extreme of shadows and extreme of highlights where do you compose the shot? How about shooting just inside the line of the shadow. Bright light coming from behind. The shadows will be softened because you will get light reflecting from the highlights just outside the frame of the image composition.
@MarkWallaceVideos
Ай бұрын
I try to avoid being right on the line between shade and light - it can make your subjects eyes water or squint. Get into the shadow and there will be plenty of light streaming in to create shadows and highlights in a pleasing way. But, sometimes you can break the rules and get great results. Always give your ideas a try and see what happens!

She's got great hair! And she's brilliant, not just a pretty face.
You had been off-radar to me for a couple years. And now you return with shady business. ;) To keep my life sorted and clear, I subscribe to nothing. But you're on the radar again. Nice. Have you noticed how the contemporary lifestyle magazine shots (feminine?) all are in light tones (slightly muted and soft high key), where there's no sculpting light in the model/sitter's side towards the camera? Where the background my be a tad lighter than the subject we see? And frequently a wider lens is used to get more background (almost ADHD to the focused brain). Open shade - there's an important aspect to daylight's "shade" in that it has a high fraction of blue light, more so than in direct sunlight. The shorter wavelengths of blue are diffracted more in the atmosphere and that's why the sky looks blue while the direct sunlight from the rising/setting sun looks red. In these shots, the white wall on the balcony towards the floor, looks too blue. The bounced light from those strategically placed V-flats the size of buildings makes the portraits look very nice. Here the blue tinge doesn't get in the way. But the farther the shade's WB is away from direct light's WB, it becomes more of an issue when both are in the same shot.

Yeah, I wish I had another 15-20 feet to avoid that, but that balcony was tiny.
