Create a mini budget kitchen garden in the cottage garden 🌿 using palette collars

Growing your own herbs is a fantastic way to ensure that you always have fresh herbs on hand and save money in the supermarket. Whether you begin from seed or purchase pre-grown plants, you can harvest what you need whenever you need it. In this video, I will use a small wooden palette collar to create a raised bed for planting herbs and building a miniature kitchen garden in my cottage garden.

Here is more information on the plants I used:
Rosemary
Thyme
Both rosemary and thyme love well-drained soil and can tolerate some drought. Mix in some horticultural grit to the soil when planting. Both herbs can add flavour to roasted meats and vegetables to soups and stews.
Parsely
Parsley is a biennial herb ( annual in Ireland ); it doesn't tolerate frost, so best to move it into a porch or sheltered area during the Winter months. They are commonly used as a garnish or flavour enhancer in cooking.
Sage
Commonly used in cooking and paired with chicken, pork or fish and soups. Sage has also been found to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a popular ingredient in natural remedies and health supplements.
Rocket salad
Rocket is an annual plant with one growing season, easy to grow from seed and takes around 40 - 50 days to grow from seed to harvest.
Chives
A member of the onion family, they grow back each year and have a lovely purple flower that the bees love. Mild onion-like taste and is often used to garnish soups and salads.
Apple mint
It can be invasive, so best to grow it in a container or pot. It makes a lovely tea or is great with a cocktail and is known to aid digestion.
Scented mint geranium ( Pelargonium Lady Diana): Nice alternative to mint as less invasive. The leaves can be used t make tea or in a mojito, and the flowers are also edible.
Immortelle ( also known as curry plant)
It is often used in skincare products for its anti-ageing properties and essential oils. The leaves can be used to add flavour to soups and curries and even used to make tea.
What is a palette collar?
A palette collar is a wooden frame that can be stacked and has hinges in all four corners. It is commonly placed on top of a pallet, creating a box that can be used for shipping items.
You can stack them on top of each other to create tall, multi-level containers, usually made from either wood or plastic.
These are popular in gardens because they are great for creating a raised bed on a budget.

Your garden looks wonderful sadly I can not be outside due to my allergies to all the bees. I run when I see then and carry 2 EPI Pens with me all the time they have saved my life. Keep sharing . I may not be able to have my own but I can enjoy it through others

Yes so true, everything can be re planted out when they get larger, or trimmed back so suit whatever size garden. When making a display container, they like it to look full for the display, but I did stress that you would plant them further apart when planting normally.

I am in California ❤and I have been watching for a long time! I love all your videos. Especially the gardening ones. My son is visiting me and helping me do a raised flower bed in my front yard. Girl we would give anything for some rain. I live in Texas , USA We haven't had rain since April where I live. Some days our temps are 120° F My poor gardens are struggling and we are having to do as much watering as we can until they ration it.... Your garden is amazing. I love the herb garden. Good to know about the mint. I have some mint and basil that were given to me so I will plant them separately. I grow basil in my kitchen window but I will be doing a bigger patch outside. Catherine you looked gorgeous in that dress! I love your haircut as well. It looks a little shorter.❤️❤️

I tried my hand with chives and they were spindley for six wks, however finally got some nice growth. I use alot of sage and mint and oregano for health reasons, and then dehydrate for longevity.

Your videos are certainly part of my wellbeing now - they inspired me to try in my garden, so now I have so much joy growing veg/wildflowers, I love curating my garden. It's very much a wild garden though, as I only have the grass & hedges cut once a year, the rest of the time it's overgrown & lush
