CRCNA Synod 2023: Women in Church Office Protest Credentials

Ойын-сауық

When the CRCNA permitted classes to seat women in ecclesiastical office it permitted churches to note their protest on their credentials. These have been read in a variety of classes and at Synod since them. They tend to be an irritation to some. There was an overture that wanted to have it stop but the Synodical advisory had another idea which went through surprisingly smoothly.

If someone is that sensitive regarding disagreement and bluntly spoken words, I don't know how they survive in a group of Dutch people.

Church politics appears very tricky. Offending delegates or offending anyone can be so divisive. It must be hard for pastors and deacons who are just trying to accomplish God’s work with love and honor. It seems some will always be offended - for good and bad reasons. I pray for leaders in the Body of Christ - leaders of all faiths who are fighting the good fight both men and women. As I get older I try to judge others less and appreciate those who are trying to serve more. Life is too short for division to take away our peace. You’re a good dude Paul. I wish your denomination well.

The Book of Timothy must be a real irritant to certain women.

I normally come here for the monologues and rants but as a Catholic I find this entire discussion fascinating. To be clear, no schadenfreude 😉

In my experience women have no idea how much their presence shapes the behavior of men.

For those who are confused or irritated by the careful discussion regarding rules, remember that the larger the organization, the clearer the rules and procedures need to be. Beyond that, for a large group of folks who are making decisions, clarifying the rules of how those decisions are made is critical. Why? Because for those who disagree with any decision, the question of "proper procedure" will always arise (as it does in the U.S. court system). (I write as a pastor in the CRC and 3 time delegate to Synod.) BTW, thanks Paul for explaining what happened here to those who may not have fully understood.

I love that he pointed out tradition versus the rules of procedure. This is so great to watch. And being a candidate on that stage a few days after this, it's great to know what created the mood in the room.

Something about this seems like the first century Hebrew leaders debating about nuances in the law. Which is in contrast to the book of Galatians. How do we as humans continue to systemize what is meant to be a dynamic relationship with the living God? (Speaking as a former Catholic, and now belonging to a Protestant denomination that has a statement of faith that focuses on the major doctrines, and leaves much of the rest to each local church.) And we wonder why kids fall away?

Less organization is good. Less micromanagement is good. That is why I like congregations but ignore denominations. "Do you accept that Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior?" ... Answer yes? ... Done! If Jesus shows up, he wouldn't even be an official congregational member ;-)

It is strange that what was shown on screen does not exactly correspond to what the speaker read out. That is surely a serious discrepancy. Did those proposing the original recommendation approve of its rewording?

This seems painfully tedious. That being said, I have a coworker who’d be very much in their element hammering out small details of order. I wonder/worry that Synod would select for people like my coworker and not like me. I have no idea, just wonder.

Disbar clergy or congregations that don't meet the requirements. If none wants to, then wrap up your denomination, it wasn't real anyway.

Any chair can use any language they want. The protest scripts have more or less come from a template. This just gives the chair something to read that hopefully will both express the protest and keep the peace.
