🐒 CRAZY SLEEPER! PEUGEOT 205 GTI Mi16 SWAP WITH MENTAL SOUNDS
Peugeot 205 GTI Info:
The 1.6 litre GTI was launched in 1984, and came with a XU5J engine, producing 105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp), for the 1987 model year the XU5J received the cylinder head with larger valves thus becoming XU5JA. The new engine was quoted for 115 bhp (86 kW; 117 PS). The 1.9 litre GTI came with an XU9JA engine producing 128 PS (94 kW; 126 hp), although later models with a catalytic converter produce 122 PS (90 kW; 120 hp). Internally these engines are very similar, the main differences on 1.9 litre versions being the longer stroke, oil cooler, and some parts of the fuel injection system. The shorter stroke 1.6 litre engine is famed for being revvy and eager, while the 1.9 litre feels lazier and torquier. Outside the engine bay the main differences between the 1.6 GTI and the 1.9 GTI are half-leather seats (1.9 GTI) vs. cloth seats (1.6 GTI); and disc brakes all-round (1.9 GTI) vs. discs at the front and drum brakes at the back (1.6 GTI); as well as the 14-inch (360 mm) alloy (Speedline SL201) wheels (1.6 GTI) vs. 15-inch (380 mm) (Speedline SL299) alloys (1.9 GTI).
The 205 is still often treated as a benchmark in group car tests of the newest GTI models or equivalent. Peugeot itself has never truly recreated this success in future GTI models, although they came very close with the highly regarded GTI-6 variant of the Peugeot 306. A cabriolet version of the 205, known as the CJ/CT/CTI, was designed and partially assembled by Pininfarina of Italy. The CTI version offered the same plastic arches and wheels as the 1.6 GTI. Some later models incorporated the catalysed 1.9-litre engine.

The main aesthetic difference between the GTI/CTi versions and other 205 models were the plastic wheel arches and trim, beefier front and rear bumper valances. The shell also underwent some minor changes, including larger wheel arches (to suit the larger wheels on the GTI and CTi), and the suspension was redesigned and sat lower on the GTI with stiffer springs, different wishbones and a drop-linked anti-roll bar.
With the early success of the 205 GTI in Europe, Motor Trend reported in 1984 that Peugeot was seriously considering adding it to its US lineup, even though Peugeot had a more upmarket image in the United States.[citation needed] Nothing ever came of such rumours, however, and any talk of Peugeot expanding its presence in US became moot when the company was forced to pull out in 1991.
Sales of the GTI in the United Kingdom in the early 1990s were badly hit by soaring insurance premiums, brought about by high theft and 'joyriding' of cars of this sort. Increasingly stringent emissions regulations meant the 1.6 GTI went out of production in 1992, while the 1.9-litre was sold for a couple more years thanks to re-engineering of the engine to enable it to work properly with a catalytic converter, which dropped power to 122 PS (90 kW; 120 hp).
In October 2020 Peugeot announced that their heritage brand "l'Aventure Peugeot" would make a factory restoration program for the 205 GTI available in 2021 as part of the company's 210th anniversary celebration.[11] This program is intended to be expanded to other Peugeot (and possibly Citroën) models later, but will begin with the 205 GTI as it is one of the most desirable Peugeot built that is also available in large numbers. The cars will be restored to as-new condition, with certain no longer available parts being made on 3D-printers.
The styling of the 205 is often thought to be a Pininfarina design.

I converted my Miami blue special edition 1.6gti to an mi16…retained the 1.6 gearbox. Absolute weapon back in the late 90’s, early 2000, destroyed sierra cosworths and Audi tt’s at the time without issue 👍🏼 As many have said, it’s not all about horsepower figures, especially when the cars so light in the first place.

A lot of the new kids that fly about thinking they can drive with all the electronics keeping them on the road and in a straight line will have never experienced the real driving experience of one of these old school classics! So glad I grew Up in the same era of proper fun real cars as you!

This thing must be a monster. My phase 2 106 was around 180 brake and used to rev off the clock and scare a lot of bigger 'faster' cars. And that was a proper riot of a car to drive quickly this must be awfy lively. Awesome video as always.

I had one of these 18 years ago when I was 19, such a nice little car. mi16 with a 1.6 gearbox and it would give so many big boy cars a run for their money up to about 120mph and that was a standard mi, that one must be an absolute rocket with that horsepower!

I very nearly bought a (badly) done face lift 309GTi some years ago, it was fairly cheap but I still chickened out! This is an exceptional car!
My standard mi16’d 205 was an 80grand Porsche eater let alone tuned up! miss it so much

When we used to go to Guildford cruise and ace cafe back in the day there used to be a m16 205 that came with us and that thing was crazy against the fez and escort rs's. Loving the old school content and the 80s music!

The car I always promised myself as a kid cause I had a picture of one on a pencil case which I still have. Once I was older enough to own and insure one that was it and 20yrs later I've still got it gti6 powered as well. Still gives me goose bumps getting it out the garage.

Wow didnt know they could be tuned to that level. I used to have a 1989 405 Mi16 when they were new. Think they were 160bhp. Which for a 1.9 at the time was world leading.

My mates dad round the corner had a 405 Mi-16 4x4 in white, he was a bit of an arse but the car was lush! Dude across the road from them had a Lotus Carlton, much dribbling was done walking to and from their house 🤤

I’m James’s brother, my 205Mi16 should be ready in the spring. Running jenvey itbs, forged rods and pistons, one piece valves, high lift cams, double valve springs, mechanical lifters with dry sump for good measure. 8500rpm 235+bhp 🚗💨

Always loved the naturally aspirated tin cans. Mate of mine had a 106 gti on throttle bodies. His brother still has a 500bhp 106 turbo. I always preferred the bodies somehow. Just the right amount of power.

I’m building a vts turbo, I’ll probably try to make as little power as I can before I turn it up but the engine is fully forged so that will happen inevitably! May have to put a billet crank in though, when I have a “spare” £1600 kicking about… 😵💫

The XU9J4 is an absolute peach of an engine. In my opinion the best sounding 4 cylinder ever. I have one of the few remaining Phase 1 405 Mi16's with a full stainless Mongoose system, set of cams and rev limit increased to 8.1k. Sounds insane after 4.5k rpm. I actually used to have a bit of a dislike of 205's due to the amount of 405's that had their engines pilfered for conversions!

I used to love the sound of my old man limiter banging his 309gti and Renault 19 with williams parts absolutely everywhere we went, nothing compares to the old school French cars sounds. deep throttle body noise and limiter bashing until the valves bent😂id kill for a Renault 19 nowadays any model to engine swap, I love them. Nostalgia of sliding around on the leather seats while my dad raced everything that moved👌

I always remember my mate done one of these conversions years ago it was absolutely rapid big but though he didn't upgrade his brakes as you can imagine it didn't end well all that power is absolutely useless when you can't STOP

My uncle done one of these builds when I was a kid took the engine out of a Citroen zx 2.0 mi16 same engine that’s in the 405 thing went like a rocket

I had a 1.9 G reg black red stripe. Was great round b roads. Couldn't imagine it any faster lol. Sold it in 2001 for £300 running.

Don't feel bad. I had quite a few back in the day. Including two perfectly good 1.9's for £150 each lol Don't think I ended up selling any of them. I just drove them until the wheels fell off. Zero regrets. Loved every second.

I tried to buy an silver 205 Gti with Lemans engine and with the famous Zender kit on it as my first car.. but when parents finds out that insurece was not allowed with that i could not buy it.. so I know how this goes almost.. like an animal.!!

Does it fall apart as much as the Megane r26 or 225s lol
Ah brings back memories of my old Mi16'd 205GTi. I've owned way faster cars, but that was the most fun.
