Fun fact : After Zlatan got this unfair red card (at around 30th minute), Paris Saint-Germain had to play for the rest of the match in a full Stamford Bridge at 12vs10 because the referee was obviously biased towards Chelsea. Diego Costa made 3 obvious fouls that should have been red card including a tackle from behind on Thiago Silva, but only got a yellow. Chelsea scored at the 80th minute but David Luiz managed to equalize 5 minutes later, game went to extra time, then Hazard scored a penalty, but then Thiago Silva managed to equalize at the very last minute with a header and sent PSG to the quarter finals. It was one of PSG most iconic UCL moments. (They won 3-3 agreggate on away goals)

These cards are reasons used as to why VAR was needed. Officials on their own are limited even when in the right positions and we all have the advantage of multiple camera angles and replays but officials don’t without VAR. The card on Rooney was likely more so the letter of the law, and possibly a ref not knowing they are teammates. But to be fair, teammates on a club team doesn’t always translate to international games. Also don’t remember if Rooney had any verbal warnings at the time. Not sure what the law stated then but most of those are yellows now unless there is something more violent or a push in the face or something… or accompanying threats or other unacceptable verbal statements. Also, Jesus’ was legit right call. It was a justified yellow and was his second yellow. If there was no contact and the player dove, then sure bad call, but there was clear aggressive contact to the player’s head and I didn’t see Jesus playing the ball at all. He’s leaning in knowing he’s creating the contact. And with the way in which the other player went down, even if VAR was available, that’s a guarantee to get called and yellowed.
