Crazy Hail in Edmonton 2012

This was a wicked hailstorm in Edmonton at 3AM on Thursday July 12, 2012. I know that this is nothing compared to the thunderstorms we used to get in the tropics, but still, it is fun to get something powerful like this once-in-a-while in the out west.

Thanks. I shot this with an old HD cam that is never used. We are in the southeast side (34 street and 23 ave) where the storm hit the hardest. All the flood photos seen so far happened in sections within 5 mins drive from where this video was shot. The asphalt in front of my house has clearly sunken because of all the water. Glad there was a lower elevation park in front of us to draw the water away from our property and foundation.

This is the best footage of that storm that I've seen so far. Looks like you must be on the W. or S. side where it was apparently a big wallop!

I wish I took some pictures from my walkabout today. This is a new neighbourhood with many houses still having only dirt for their yards with lots and lots of 2-3 feet high weeds. After this storm, all the weeds were flat on the ground and dead as if somebody had sprayed weed killer. Any plants/garden exposed to the hail were flattened or broken off. Our driveway was left with little black pebbles, from what we assume was pieces of the shingles chipping off.

this is not the edmonton i remember. i've been to edmonton many many times but not recently and i.ve seen it look like a battlefield...what thev hell happened?, did the sky open up on you. anotherr thing is that storms of the magnitude are much more effective during the afternoon when people are up and about....so praise the lord, you got off luckier than you might imagine being it struck while edmonton was asleep. thx4 postin' a better video!

That was a wallop indeed. On a side note, the Arctic Ocean sea ice will all be melted as early as next year. It'll all be vast heat-absorbing open water in the summers. That'll be the first time that's happened in 1 million years, I think. So a lot of people are really wondering what to expect..We might get walloped with bizarre weather that hasn't happened in a million years .. or maybe not, we'll see.

Wow... I'm downtown where it was fairly tame except for continuous, amazing sheet lightning. Anyone over there with a garden must've lost most plants, too, eh?
