Back in 1966 I worked on a tugboat named the Gwen ed. It was towing a barge that was once a WWII LCM stripped down to be a bulk carrier. We would pick up a barge load of pumas from the Island of Dominica and tow it to Saint Thomas Virgin Islands, and then back to Dominica for another load. The tug was built back around 1920, and originally was powered by a steam engine, a few years later it was converted to diesel. The Engine was a 6-cylinder Fairbanks- Morse with 14 inch pistons with a 17 inch stroke. While maneuvering if by accident it stopped dead center, we had to engage a worm gear on the shaft to hand crank it into position to start a stroke. If I remember correctly it might have had a hot spot. Now that I'll be 80 years old next year, I feel proud to have worked on a machine that was powered by such an engine, back then in my youth I did not realize what this engine was, I assumed most tugs had them or some variation of it. I sailed on merchant steamships before that job. I was used to B&W water tube boilers and steam turbines, I always wanted to sail on a ship driven by a triple-expansion steam engine, but never got to experience it. Although I worked on an old Wiley Whirly as the fireman-oiler-water tender that was powered by a fire tube boiler. That was in 1971 on the Chesapeake Bay across from Fort McHenry driving a steam-powered pile driver for a new pier. I also remember a friend of mine when I was in New Brighton High School whose father had about 7 or 8 hit-and-miss engines in his garage, they were small. The Amish around Beaver and Lawrence counties were permitted to use them. We used to call them gas-powered washing machine motors.

@ 11:10 The description for the RR Griffon V12. Says it has 36 pistons and cylinders? Each cylinder generates 35 horsepower and you have multiplied 36 cylinders by 35 to arrive at 1,260hp. It's a V12, which means it has 12 pistons and 12 cylinders and the Mk 57 and 58 made between 2350 and 2450hp

17:54 Radial Beetle... Hmm... I don't know where those specs and the story came from, though. All THAT for mere 90 ponies and 2,4 liters? What we are actually seeing here is an extremely modded californian VW Beetle that received a huge (for a Beetle) Continental W670-9A engine and that - supposedly, from some pics from the net - is going to be modded to be airscrew propelled (what is seen here is the original cooling fan). The W670-9A was a WW2 era improvement of the R-670 7-cylinder four-stroke radial aircraft engine produced by Continental in the '30s. The W670-9A displaces 668 cu-in (or 10946 cc, about 11 litres), has 250 HPs at 2,500 rpm and weights a puny 465 lb / 211 kg. The R670 / W670 engines were also used on many aircraft in the 1930s and 1940s, the W670-9A in particular was used in american M3, M3A1 & M3A3 Stuart light tanks in WW2 . It's not a particularly rare engine (7k-10k USD in running conditions), so it's often used for mad modifications or even agricultural stuff
