Crazy ALCO Chug and Rare Steamtown Switching
Ойын-сауық
Day number one of my Pennsylvania road trip found me in Scanton, where I was treated to some bucket list operations. I had been wanting to railfan Delaware Lackawanna for years, and was treated to a plethora of the DL’s eclectic ALCO roster including the only surviving C636, Lehigh Valley 414, and more. I even got to witness some exceptionally rare Steamtown switching operations, with none other than the NKP 514 providing the muscle. Thanks for watching, and stay tuned for more PA videos, including Reading and Northern steam and freight and Strasburg ft. N&W 611!

Pennsylvania native here! I was born in the Lehigh Valley and have been railfanning here for years. We are most definitely blessed with colorful shortlines and heritage railroads. My home state is still my favorite to railfan, even after nearly a decade.

Good thing you take advantage of it! Between the beautiful seasons and wide variety of trains, I have considered PA one of the best railfan states as well

@@FloridaRailfan Next time you find yourself in the Keystone State, I’d recommend the East Broad Top and Horseshoe Curve. Both are awesome
Another great railroad to photograph is Andy's Reading & Northern. They are a very friendly railroad and once T-1 2102 gets finished, she'll be broken back into service on train, NRFF, the North Reading Fast Freight.

@@FloridaRailfan If you ever visit Philadelphia, be sure to visit the New Hope and Ivyland and the Pennsylvania Northeastern. And soon, SMS Rail Lines. They're restoring an 0-6-0 for freight service.
What a neat video! Great narration and documentation of a neat railroad!

hello !!! great video of our northern trains up here !!! fyi... mlw is NOT milwaukee it is montreal locomotive works (mlw).excellent, excellent video !!! i just bought an alco delaware-lackawanna engine for my layout based on seeing your work !!!

Awesome sight. Just a side note, at 16:52, the "M" in MLW stands for Montreal, not Milwaukee. The M420W was a pure MLW product of the 1970's (Alco had already bitten the dust at this point), but in its heart, beats a classic turbocharged 12-251C. The BC-Rail-style K5H horn playing the classic Canadian chord is an added bonus.

Thank you, I noticed that after the video was uploaded and cannot believe myself. Crazy how many times that silly brain-fart snuck under my nose!!!
It was so nice of the crews to let you through the portal to 1972 with them for the day's operation.

Yes, 3642 is a real beast. I was lucky enough to see a lot of these 636's on CP in and around Farnham, Quebec before they sold the whole line .But that's another story. Cool video, I'm planning a trip myself to Lockport, New York to shoot their Alco's.
When we were at Steamtown five years ago the guide explained the logistics in getting that Big Boy from out west to PA as there are only so many tracks that can support it. In the mid 60's the engine went on tour and promptly derailed in a LHVRR yard near me in upstate NY. Great video in every way possible!

I can only imagine how much of a headache it provided folks getting it cross-country. Thank you for the kind words!
The Nickel Plate Road was actually taken over by the N&W in 1964, not 1968. (1968 was the year of 'the merger that never should've happened', Penn Central.)
Better late then never, I missed a lot both arriving, and leaving Steamtown. Sad, but it is what it is. anyway, great video it was nice to see what I missed, and I learned a lot, I didn't 3642 was the only operating C636 that was fascinating to learn. Thanks for sharing, and happy railfanning :)
