Truly the best tutorial I've found on youtube. Other videos made it sound like you needed to turn the tips DURING the letter. As in they REALLY over-emphasized how often you needed to turn them. Also thought from other vids that you'd generally keep a light hand but your explanation has cleared all of my concerns so far. I am very grateful, thank you so much! ❤

Okay, I just got to say: your video helped me so much! I’ve never really understood the ins and outs of calligraphy, but when you said that it’s more about applying less/or more pressure rather than changing your angle, that really helped me understand what to do better! I definitely will still need lots of practice, but hearing that helped me a bunch and I’m starting to get the hang of the overall calligraphy technique better :)

Magda Flis Like with other hobbies in most times you will have to practice. There is a ton of sheets online for free you can print for practicing calligraphy. Just like improving your handwriting, write the alphabet both upper and lower case. Practice as usual but write the letter slowly to get the form. Writing a few times with practice and pace is key to good handwriting. Also, handwriting looks much neater when the height of the letters, and especially close to each other. Most importantly since many cannot read or know how to read in cursive. I would rather write in print so the handwriting looks clearer. While in cursive I want to make the handwriting, and letters more readable and clear. So do not get sad. You can do it just know that you should believe in yourself.

Hello! There are many types of specific marker paper that you can use, but I actually use HP Premium Choice laser jet paper for my lettering projects. In this video, I just used a sketch notepad, but I wouldn't recommend it because the paper is so textured - it will definitely ruin your brushes if you're using more delicate brush pens. I have a video that shows comparisons and why I love the paper I use - it's also pretty inexpensive on amazon. (Totally not sponsored, I just really like it. Though I do have affiliate links in my description box.) As for gel medium, I don't really have any experience using that. I wish I could paint, but definitely don't have that skill. Sorry! Thanks for watching!

  • @HowtoHandLetter

Hello! This notepad is just a sketchpad that I use for some videos because I go through SO much paper. But I only use either crayolas or pens that are already frayed on it, because it's not good paper for your markers/brush pens. I recommend and use HP Premium Choice Laserjet Paper for brush lettering! It's not super expensive (especially compared to expensive marker paper) but it's really smooth and you can purchase a big pack on amazon for not too much. Here's a video where I show the differences: kzread.info/dash/bejne/m6Kc08OQeK3QfLQ.html Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

I'm so happy that you made this video because I had that very same problem months ago when I began looking into Crayola Lettering...thick lines all the time. Drills like yours do REALLY help and so do videos like this. Can I request maybe doing quotes using Crayolas Broad and the Supertips...I'm still struggling with the Supertips for some reason😒 and I find that watching other lettering quotes or statements...anything really...helps so much! I'd love your input/constructive feedback on my videos. They don't have many views and am feeling a bit discouraged as of lately....Thank You for all you share! Laura💐😄🙏

  • @HowtoHandLetter

Hello! Thank you so much for watching! Yes, I will definitely dry to do more of those lettering videos. I struggle a bit with uploading them to youtube because once I speed them up, they are typically SO short, so sometimes I end up just posting them to Instagram. Maybe I will have to think about making a compilation so I'm not uploading a bunch of 30 second videos ;) Thanks for the suggestion. As for the youtube channel, I'm so sorry you're feeling discouraged! Your lettering is beautiful. I'm no pro, but there are a couple of things you could try. First of all, I'd recommend trying to make your video titles a bit more searchable. Like on your last video, there might not be many people searching for a may lettering challenge or those specific pens or styles so specifically. But if you made it a little bit more generic, like "Calligraphy using Tombow Brush Pens". From what I understand, the first words in your titles & description box are what help people find you - so unless you have a huge following already, they may not be able to find you if you're not using phrases that people are looking up often. One way you can do this is to go to the search bar on youtube & search things about lettering and see what comes up. The ones that people are searching the most will come up as suggestions for you to choose. Try to use some of those as your tags in your video (use all of the tags they'll let you, too.. just make sure they're relevant or your video might get shut down). One other thing you might try is to add a voice over to your videos. I haven't ever done voiceovers yet, I usually just talk as I'm lettering and if I speed it up I just add music, but I have noticed that my videos with only music always get way less views than ones where I'm explaining what I'm doing. But don't get too discouraged! You are doing a great job! Hope that helps a bit!

So Crayola isn't available where I live (India). I was today years old when I learned u can use stic colorstix' large bullet tip markers (also known as sketchpens) they are affordable, and easily available (atleast in Delhi) and I have heard they're rly durable tho I haven't used them enough to be sure. Ofc there are differences (majorly the tip shape and colours I think) but I can't say exactly what the differences are since I don't use Crayola. I've only watched videos and i can't really letter but I feel like it would work. U probably won't see this but if u did i hope this helped! ❤️

  • @HowtoHandLetter

I'm not really sure to be honest. I kind of wondered if it's for those who like the look of lettering in their journals, but don't want to actually do the lettering. If it was to be traceable, it seems like it's kind of an expensive option since you'd only get a few words and they're pretty small so I'm not sure how practical that is! I haven't tried them though so I don't know from experience! Sorry!

It's totally a personal preference, but I'd say super tips are easier to start with than brush pens. Thanks for watching!

do you have practice sheets where you have actual words/phrases to write over? I feel like everything looks fine and nice when I try to write each letter separately but once I put them together in a single word/sentence, it all goes to shit :( it'd be nice to practice actual words/sentences instead of writing alphabets over and over again. It's going to come more naturally quicker that way when you don't have to keep thinking about how to write the next letter. I've been looking for a good practice/exercise books or sheets but most of them have alphabets and very few words and never any phrases/sentences. Any suggestions?

So what is the best brand to buy a pen for this type of writing?

In this video I just use a regular Crayola broad tipped marker (like from the kids section) and I think they're great for beginners! A lot of people choose the Tombow Dual Tip brush pen when they advance into more difficult lettering. I'm going to link a video here that demonstrates the differences between the two! kzread.info/dash/bejne/ppmTrrtpaNq_eaw.html Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

I hear you on that! I actually have a video coming out this week with capital letters! I am not too traditional/formal in my capital letters calligraphy. I prefer a modern and minimalistic look that goes along with my lettering style. The video will go up on Friday so hopefully it will be more helpful. Thanks for watching!
