For about a week now I’ve been trying to a watercolour birthday card but I mess up the lettering every. Single. Time. No matter what it always just looked off. I watched I’m ashamed to admit how many hours of lettering tutorials, looked at free font sites and it still looked like crap. I finally stumbled onto your video and, at the risk of sounding like one of those cheesy infomercial testimonials… it’s now 11:45pm, the card is done, lettering and all and I’m pretty sure it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever created. Best part? Not only does the lettering look AMAZING, by changing one or two things I was doing out for what you did in the video… I wrote 28 beautiful letters big and bold, dead centre on the front of the card in less than ten minutes. I wish I had discovered your channel sooner haha

Learn cursive. If you weren’t taught it, learn it. Learning cursive actually increases your reading comprehension and written expression. There’s a specific process that happens in your brain when you’re translating thoughts into written cursive sentences that doesn’t happen with regular printing. Writing from people who are fluent in cursive is more complex in sentence structure and more expressive. It’s a skill that should be much more heavily emphasized 💜

They used to teach cursive at my school. Right when my class was supposed to start learning they stopped teaching it. I wanted to learn it so bad and I was really upset so I taught myself! I started writing cursive at school and my teacher said it was unnecessary and said “who taught you that, your grandma?” Even though my grandma had just passed away and she knew that. Needless to say I didn’t like that teacher very much and I don’t think she liked me.... So yeah I’m pretty sure they don’t teach cursive at school anymore but maybe it’s only like that in my area

Being 78 yrs old, I am from the "old school" of learning penmanship. I always marveled at my mother's beautiful handwriting which was taught to her while attending Catholic school. She said it was called the "Palmer Method"...the "r" as I recall, was a bit strange. I was taught penmanship in a public school during my 3 rd and 4th grades. The goal for completing your practice book was to be given your own pen and ink...yes, we had inkwells in our desks and it was awesome to achieve a higher level of something you loved to do...peacock blue became my ink color of choice To this day, I take pride in my handwriting and believe this site could be beneficial to furthering my interests.

When I was in school, we learned the McLean Method of writing. This was strange in that your wrist had to be up off the desk, and your last three fingers had to be dragging lightly across the page . Try and write like that. IMHO it was a good excuse to get your knuckles wrapped with a rope of steel wrapped in rubber . I can see it hanging on her sack now ..sister cutthroat

When I took a real calligraphy class we used a regular pencil the first week before moving on to the nibs. You’ll know you are doing the pressure correctly if you are getting the thicker and thinner to work in pencil. (It’s not super thick but it’s enough you can see)

  • @HowtoHandLetter

@@CreativeCreatorCreates Yes! I will try to do this! Quick answer though (from my experience) - marker paper is great! I personally like Canson marker paper, but there are lots of great ones. The reason that many people (myself included) recommend the HP Laser Jet paper is because it's really good but also so inexpensive compared to marker paper! I can usually get about 500 pages for the same price (or less) as 50 pages of marker paper. But if you are just going for quality, I'd probably use marker paper. Hope that helps!

I totally agree that cursive writing is so important. Most folks print sloppy and when writing any length of time, is uncomfortable. Cursive writing feels more like a fluid movement and helps me think about the content/context more fluidly. Teach your kids to write in cursive. It makes a difference.

Years ago, I had to learn printing in the proper directions with pencils, before we were allowed to learn script, we used a flexible quilt and an ink bottle. Our school desks had a slot for the pen and a round indentation for the inkwell. Speedball Points was the major brand elementary schools used! Felt tipped markers were small glass bottles filled with felt with a brass eyelet with a piece of felt sticking through it. They were refillable and cans of marker ink looked similar to 3 in 1 oil. The tyranny of qwerty wasn't learned until 7th grade on manual Typewriters.

I’m struggling finishing an artwork. The lacking part was my enthusiasm and skill or so I thought. Then I began to realize how unnatural the sketchbook is with how easily it is stained and absorbs the pigment dry? It wasn’t me. It was the tool I was using. Im devastated because papers around me are all from China. I wish I knew this before I started.

It’s actually inspired me to step back from actual brush lettering and start faux lettering. What is your opinion on that? Do you think it will help me when I go back to brush lettering?

i actually do think it's important you find the right pen because when I was starting out, some pens were much harder to use and some made my writing look way better. I think it's important you test a lot to find the right one. (The usually have open testers at the store to test

I do agree with that when it comes to perfecting your lettering or finding your style style and I have shared that in tips before, that certain pens just seem to write better. I personally LOVE writing with a sharpie stained. I feel like my lettering always looks better with a sharpie stained + smooth paper. But this is more a beginner tutorial and my point in that part of the video is more for when people think that just buying an expensive pen will help them be able to create without having to practice or learn how to use a brush pen. I think sometimes people get disappointed because they buy a pen someone else used and then realize that it's actually the technique that made their lettering beautiful, not simply an expensive pen. Aside from awful pens that just collapse when you push on them, I think that you can really learn HOW to use the brush pen (i.e. thick & thin strokes) and build up that muscle memory with (almost) any brush pen. But I do agree and I love testing out brush pens to see which ones work best for my own style. I hope that makes sense! Thanks for watching!

@@HowtoHandLetter True, I find that brush pens that are too soft are really hard to use still after I've been lettering for a year. Also, the ones that are too hard don't make my lettering look very good. I really like a medium sized and medium stiffness. You and I have very similar writing styles b/c you are who I learned from. Thanks so much for all your help! I love the bubbly-and less tilted your letters are. Very modern looking. Right now, that's my only style, I haven't really created my own. It's hard once you're stuck on one you like haha. Also, I used to practice by going through the alphabet starting with "a" and writing every word I could think of starting with that letter. (It's harder than you think and sometimes could only think of like 5 words) I dunno if you taught me that or if I came up with that on my own but that would really help with each and every letter of the alphabet. I recommend others to do that too.

I use the yt option to speed up or slow down a video. I speed it to up to get to the part where the actual teaching is done. I slow it way down when they actually start demonstrating, that's the place where they always speed everything up. They ought to do the opposite, speed up their warm up chat and slow down their demo part. So I do it for them 😂 it's fun to hear them talk in double fast or double slow time. I don't understand the point of teaching something if nobody can really see it done. Sometimes I think it's just their way of trying to make you think they are more awesome than they are., That's mean to think that, I know, everybody is under a time crunch these days. I love these writing videos, that's a REAL skill, no doubt about it. I need to watch more of them and learn how to do this. I have the worst writing and learning this would really help the rest of my art, it would slow me down too, I'm a little too speedy myself. I think people who hand letter really are awesome. Maybe I'll get that book, it looks like it's just my speed 🤪. Yes, I think I'm going to get that book. I have too many pens with way too much ink still in them. What will people think when I kick the bucket and leave behind a bunch of full pens, how embarrassing! My goal is to leave a bunch of used up art supplies to my posterity.

Hi there! Thanks so much for watching! I actually do not think that practicing this type of handlettering changes everyday print writing because they are quite different in technique. You will see many people with beautiful calligraphy who have absolutely terrible handwriting lol! I do think that practicing print handwriting similar to how you practice calligraphy can help though! I know when I'm writing a lot, my handwriting tends to be neater. I actually created a worksheet set of my own print writing for that reason, but you can absolutely practice however is easiest for you! I hope that helps!
