Crawford High School in San Diego - 1978

May 3, 1978
For this CBS 8 Journal piece, Carol Kendrick reported on changes at Crawford High School - where she had once been a student. Kids at the San Diego campus spoke about how things were different for them than for previous generations.
"Teachers who survived the '60s on campus say it's a lot quieter now," Kendrick said.
One of the common themes teachers and students both discussed was a greater focus on individuality - from freedom in the dress code to more varied course options.

Not really boomers since most were born in the early 60s. Very late ‘boomers’ at any rate.

the boomers are from 1945 to 1964. the generation x starts from 1965 to 1979. So these are actually boomers. You can say they came about in the later end but that is who they still are. I wouldn't say they had it better than you. How would you like to go to the bookstore or library to find out something? rather than look it up in a matter of seconds or minutes on the computer. If you also didn't have a whole set of an encyclopedia, you were out of luck in trying to find out information, if no one around you knew what you were trying to find out.

@@203207ab , no, they aren’t boomers and generations aren’t neatly defined. There are huge differences between people born in 1945 and those in 1964, supposedly part of the same generation. Very late boomers have more in common with Gen X then those born earlier who experienced the 1960s counterculture as young adults at the time.

I'm a 1978 Graduate from HS in San Jose CA. That young man at 0:45 sounds like young folk today romanticizing the 70s and 80s. My parents never pined for the 30s and 40s though. Even though they raised us to live in the 1940s. Or, their version of it.

Yeah, I was laid back in 1978 (my class) and it wasn't because I smoked weed all the time. I literally smoked in every class I had my senior year. My friend and I had the same schedule and would sometimes pass the one hit pipe, take a hit, hold it a long, long time, exhale into our coats, and thought we were the coolest dudes in school. We may have been but, damn stupid! After the Army I became an art teacher. Apparently, I was still cool, had a stupid HS student hand me a joint. It was pathetically rolled but was actually pot (had to check). I knew I wasn't going to turn him in but, I also knew that I couldn't give it back to him. I felt like I was risking my job by taking it and flushing it.

@Daathiel My Principal (senior year) called me and my friend to the office and started asking questions that made it clear that he sat in his office, looking downhill across the field, and watched me roll a joint. The two of us, with a younger girl, climbed under the bleachers, still in plain view, and smoked it. When we got called to the office, panic set in and we stashed everything. He didn't do anything to us then, asked us to help him out with the drug problem at this small Tennessee high school. Never did know what he meant exactly but, "Yes sir." I did stop smoking it at school. My friend did not and got caught. I don't smoke it these days (mental health reasons) but, it sure is way past time for the rest of the country to legalize it.

Look at all the skinny people. Gee, I wonder what the USA did to their food to induce obesity? May have started with removing fat from food and replacing it with sugar. Using steroids and hormones along with chemicals to speed up the process of the processed food. Now about 50% of the population is overweight, but almost exclusively in the USA. Other countries are skinnier, healthier, and have a work/life balance.

Yes, back in the 60s it was about sex, drugs, and rock n roll. Kids were dressing as hippies. It was down with establishment. In the 70s that somewhat quieted it down. Kids were wearing t shirts and blue jeans. And platform shoes. Sex, drugs and rock n roll were still considered cool, but toned down alot. There was more respect for the establishment.
