The documentary “New York 77”, makes a compelling argument that the same creative spark & circumstances that gave birth to HipHop culture, was also the catalyst for Punk Rock in NYC.

I feel like this is a no-brainer for anyone from this part of the country who's versed in underground history. Different artistic manifestations of the same struggles and emotions- Punk and Hip Hop will always be twin flames (Edit; when I say "this part of the country" I'm speaking as someone from the NY Metro area lol)

It's like that with metal to some degree too. But only the types of metal that are rooted in punk like thrash. That's why bands like Anthrax and Slayer have always been able to work with rappers and have it sound great.
Was 8-10 years old when my dad showed me The Exploited - Fuck The USA. Called me over to the computer while I was playing video games. Buddy put it on, said “check this out” and went out for a smoke with my mom so I could watch it 🤣 I’ll never forget that, all these years later and he was in a Pennywise pit with me the other night 🤘🏻 Thanks Dad

Regardless of being right wing I like to listen to leftist bands like e.g. the Oppressed, Angelic Upstarts or The Clash, Crass, or Conflict....I think they play good music and f..cking great punk rock...I also listen to bands like Skrewdriver both punk stuff and nazi stuff...also Kill Baby Kill, Skullhead, No Remorse...or even Landser... MUSIC NEVER DEFINED MY POLITICAL VIEWS...I listen to all punk music...from leftists like Clash, Crass, Conflict, Oppressed, Angelic Upstarts, Los Fastidios, Belarusian Mister X (very SHARP band), through the classics like Cockney Rejects, Cock Sparrer, Sham 69, 4 Skins, The Exploited, G.B.H., Chelsea, The Boys, Generation X, Cyanide, 999, Combat 84, Condemned 84, Infa Riot, etc. and finishing with the bands like Skrewdriver, Skullhead, No Remorse...etc. It's only music at the end of the day....and you need to be a sad person if you let your personal or political views be influenced by the music you listen...

I come out of each video with so many bands to watch. Thanks a lot!
I was in a Melodic Oi! Band in the 00s on The Casualties guitarist Jake's label, Charged Records called The Agrestix. Can find our stuff on YT, we were influenced by NOFX, Oxymoron, and much of what you discussed, especially 86' UK stuff. Love all this footage you found! While I love many types of music, and was very young back then, Ska and reggae and 90s punk is my love, Oi and Street is next up. And while I love the aesthetic, I did always not enjoy the expectation to wear the uniform lol. As much as I loved it. Great stuff man!
Great video, Jack! Street punk (we called it UK82 back in the day) is one of my favorite subgenres w/Discharge and The Exploited at the top of the list. I hate parsing bands into genres, but I also love the Subhumans. I was a college station DJ at the time (hardcore/thrash) and got a lot of flak playing some of these songs on the radio. All these years later, and I still jam out to this shit. Thanks for the work...keep it up!
I was privileged enough to see The Adicts and they were amazing! GBH and Caustic Christ, Cocksparrer, Rancid, so many amazing bands. I can't even begin to tell ya how much "No Security" by Chaos UK influenced me and lead me to the crust and anarcho-punk scenes. Game changer for real. Oxymoron too. As a kid from the hood it was amazing to finally see music that gave af, had ideas, critiqued the world, explained why our lives were the way they are, and were pissed off about it. Wasn't into the Virus/Cheap Sex, Krum Bum wave at all. There were some killer bands around that era like Career Soldiers, Monster Squad, etc, but something about those cats and The Casualties just seemed fake asl.
Went on a binge of your vids im glad to see someone covering the scene

I kind of think it's worth talking about how The Casualties are one of the biggest names in the genre and in punk as a whole despite their music being pretty heavy/not as "accessible" - they did Warped Tour, had a song in a Tony Hawk game, and it really paid off for them.

Noting Skrewdriver isn't getting people into Skrewdriver. It's a necessary part of this story. It's like having a sushi buffet while ignoring food safety. Nowadays I think it's more important than it's been since Hitler died. This segment brings me back. I was going to shows in Atlanta from 98ish to 2014. It was dominated by streetpunk/oi! and I've probably seen Anti Heroes more than any other band. One of my favorites from that era was ironically (since I started with the subject) Adolf and the Piss Artists. Notable also were Time Bomb 77, The Despised, Man's Ruin, Terminus City, The Breakaways, and Bloody Sods. Ironically ska never took hold in Atlanta with as many skinheads as there were.
